Allen is right, the quality of her writing is amazing. I'm left wondering what happened from the end of this book til now, where she appears to have a husband and family, and obviously developed a great writing talent. I'd be interested in a second memoir as well as anything else she has written since. I know a lot of people jumped on this one, but if anyone is still hesitating, you need to read this book.

The wife bought a big old Omaha Steaks sampler with her Christmas orders, we're going to break out a couple of steaks and stuffed baked potatos, probably pop the bottle of bubbly and be fast asleep long before midnight ... Happy New Year, all!

I don't think these count as anachronisms. Now, you wanna talk anachronisms, how about an upper class girl giving someone the finger in 1912?

Gettin' Pulled Over By The Fuzz...Cuzz
Dan Gould replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Never ticketed for a moving violation, and I've been licensed for nearly 25 years (knock wood). Pulled over twice in all of that time. First was while driving home from college with a couple of friends. It was my turn to drive, and this dude's car had messed up steering, you had to continuously make little tiny adjustments, back and forth. So to the Georgia cop it looked like I was weaving back and forth. Pulled us over, I explained what the situation was and he just gave me the stern lecture on getting home for the holidays safe and sound. Best of all, my supposed incompetence with the guy's car meant that I didn't have to drive it the rest of the way to NYC! Second time was in Fort Lauderdale, caught speeding in a residential area speed trap. Guy took pity on me (I was all ready to give him the story that I've never gotten a ticket in 20 years of driving, can't you cut me a break?) and said he could ticket me for not having my lap belt fastened. The advantage was, its not a moving violation, so no points. The irony was that I religiously fastened lap belts and made sure that anyone in the passenger seat did too; I had only released it so I could reach the glove box and get my registration out before he reached the car. So I started to protest my innocence on the particular charge he was writing up when he suggested that he could just go back and write the speeding ticket instead. I shut up. -
What stereojack said, all of it except his personal experience seeing Dex.

Is it too early for a baseball hot stove Thread???

I'm just hoping that Reardon doesn't end up with a hard-assed DA or Judge. I'm sure the clerk was scared as it happened, but all things considered, I can't see the point of jail time -
Looking for Harold Land - The Peace Maker
Dan Gould replied to felser's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Okey dokey. You're entitled. Didn't want to leave it as the only opinion offered. -
So, let me get this straight .... he posted an article by Frank Rich, who is constitutionally incapable of writing anything that is not political ever since he left the Theater beat, I called him on it, the thread got moved, and he announced his departure? I'm speechless.

What I've heard, I've liked, and would it be inappropriate to say she's kinda purty?

Looking for Harold Land - The Peace Maker
Dan Gould replied to felser's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I disagree, and would note that this album comes after the point Chuck identified as the point where Harold Land started losing his interest, due to Harold's pursuit of what was then hip, or something like that. So his opinion, as considered as it is, may not be the definitive one. I'd watch ebay, or else email Mr. Tanno and see if he can beat DG's price. -
Has he gone away?

Don't forget "Workout" and "Thinking of home". "Hi voltage" is also nice because Blue Mitchell is such a welcome change from Lee Morgan. In fact, I think I'll get that out and play it later. MG Welcome change cuz its Blue Mitchell or cuz its not Lee Morgan? If the former, cuz I dig Blue a lot. If the latter,

Guy, she is on Main Street, but just north of the main part of it (and the part with the very highest rents). So from Route 1 in Norwalk, after you go over the bridge in Westport, you turn left onto main street, go past that main section, she's on the right past the second light. Tell her I sent you and know too that she went to high school with Horace Silver and remains friends to this day. ***************** Jim, as far as new reissues goes, she did acknowledge that she doesn't know if they'll continue to plumb deeper into the catalog or not.

Some of you (at least in the southwest CT/ NY Metro area) know Sally White, owner of Sally's Records in Westport. Hands down the greatest little music store in the world, its amazing how much she crams into her little space, and 75% of it is jazz ... Anywhoo, I visited with her yesterday and I was sure to ask her what she thought of Concord taking over Fantasy. Keep in mind that she loved Carl Jefferson and has grown to loathe what the current owners did to Carl's creation. What Sally told me is: They have told me they are not going to touch the catalog. Now, in the same breath she acknowledged that these may turn out to be "famous last words" but she also informed me that she has continued to order from the Fantasy labels and nothing has been deleted. And those of you who know her store, know that her stock goes very deep in all the important labels she carries.

No flames here. I just hope you're right. He's the enemy now and I invite him to eat sh*t and die, and take Matsui and Sheffield with him. Why all the anger towards Damon, Dan? The Sox are the ones who deserve your ire. Damon just took a better deal. I don't know if my loyalty is to a team or to players. Players change venues so often these days, both through free agency and trades, that it's hard to say. /quote] My loyalty will always be towards team and not specific players. The money offered by the Red Sox, in a perfect world where players are not purely motivated by financials, ought to have been sufficient to keep him. I believe (see my post earlier today) that Damon and Boras declined to give the Red Sox the opportunity to match or better the Yankee's offer. My ire at Damon is a natural result. Yes, I am angry with the front office for messing things up yet again, but the fact is, Damon is now a Yankee. I am a Red Sox fan. Damon is dead in my eyes. I will keep the memories near and dear, but he is dead to me. Put another way, as I have seen mentioned on a Red Sox BB, I root for the laundry. That is, if you're wearing a Sox uniform, I root for you. And if you wear pinstripes, you are the scum of the Earth. If you willfully chose to wear pinstripes (as opposed to being traded to the Yankees or drafted by them, then you are the scum of the universe.
