Yankees Fall into Last Place
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I believe it because there is a difference between a bad trade and offending the gods by cheating. And the proof is that the Sox ultimately did win, proving there was no "curse" in the first place. But I find it easy to believe that it is not a coincidence that the last time the White Sox reached the series, they threw the series and have never been back. and anyway, with El Duque and Contreras being key parts of the rotation, I am not at all concerned that the streak will end. -

See "Eight Men Out" for a sympathetic portrait of the 1919 White Sox. But whether or not you like the film, Dan, that was an eternity ago. Today's ballplayer could not relate to that infamous incident whatsoever. All that aside, it's quite amazing that a city like Chicago with two baseball teams hasn't won the Series in oh so many generations. I read the book and saw the movie, Marty, and know all about the "extenuating" circumstances. But it has nothing to do with whether today's player can relate to what those players did an "eternity" ago. I'm talking about cosmic justice: cheat, and you never win the Series again. -

DSL from BellSouth. Not sure how much, my wife pays the bill. Cable isn't an option because we have DirectTV; and when we checked on their Satelite service we realized that this was really designed for people in the sticks who are never going to see Cable or DSL, so they got them where they want them and charge them like $75 a month or something outrageous like that. I think ours is in the $30-40 range. Speed is decent, but it ain't 100MBPS! Usually 3.5. So it works out well, in the time it takes to download porn, I go stock up on junk food. -

No, winning a championship isn't any easier because you won in May. Winning in May sometimes means having a ]I]chance to win a championship in October. -

What about poor Rosey Grier?? I guess he found out that really is "allright to cry." -
With any luck at all, a jury will take into consideration all of his acts and act accordingly. Or whatever he wins from the custard stand should end up going to the guy who lost the finger and was denied the chance to have it reattached. And you gotta love the contrasting statements: Yeah, he was real debilitated by all those dollar signs flashing through his head.

Well, Nomar was the most important til last year. Off the top of my head, Trot Nixon and Kevin Youkilis both came up through the system. There are also several extremely well-regarded prospects at AA and AAA who are likely to be in Boston in 2006 or 2007 at the latest. Actually, that's an important difference: the fact that Sox are much better stocked with propsects than they were at the end of the Duquette era. Duquette slashed the budget for scouting and development and actually believed you should let other teams develop the talent and then trade for them or sign them as free agents. The new ownership changed that, and people like Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez, Kelly Shoppach, John Papelbon are the result. Its likely that Pedroia will replace Bellhorn at second, Hanley is a five-tool guy that has the biggest potential and we'll either be moved to center (to replace Damon?) or traded. On the Yanks, you're still looking at Jeter, Posada, Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera as players the Yanks developed, but the youngest one is Jeter and no one of consequence has followed, and Williams is on his last legs, Posada looks to be hitting the wall that makes catchers go downhill in a hurry, and Rivera obviously isn't quite what he was. So, the point is that the Sox don't have a lot on the roster now but that's about to change. The Yanks still have a lot on the roster, but the minors are picked clean and those guys are getting old and that's why the Yanks immediate future isn't looking so hot anymore. -

I said it before, Paul: Throwing the World Series=Eternal Damnation by the Baseball Gods and there's no time limit on eternal damnation. Sorry, but its true. -

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, a reminder when Boeing's new plane was something to marvel at, just like the new Airbus plane is marvelled at today.

Well, its not the greatest time-waster, cuz I only wanted to play once. 6/10 (and I did best on the hardest ones, go figure).

I honestly did not believe the Yanks could lose tonite, even with the rookie making his second start. I figured that staring last place in the face, they'd get the offense going and avoid this embarrasment. Which leads us to the poll question (hope you guys who hate this Sox/Yanks focus enjoy that last option). As much as I half expected a poor season, I never imagined anything this bad and have a hard time believing it will continue. But I will say this: Womack can't stay in left field, not the way he hits. And he's so short-how many drives go over his head or just beyond his reach before they realize he's not a left fielder?

I've not seen LD but I've heard many private recordings of his sets and the similarity of playlists is obvious, but I am quite sure it has nothing to do with any limitation on his ability or have anything to do with age either. I'm sure its a combination of what Jim said (doing a "show" not a "set") and what Mike said (new pianist).

This is true, Allen, but before you joined our happy little community, over on the BNBB, there was a wonderful post from Tom at Blue Note about getting contact info for Jutta Hipp, who was living somewhere in the five boroughs, Brooklyn, maybe, and how stunned and thrilled she was when a fairly sizeable check was personally delivered to her. So, some labels do try to do right.

I have received my copy from MartyJazz. Not sure when I'll get to listen, but I have it. -
Man, I am P.O'd. When I saw this listed on Alan's site, I was psyched for more, unheard Dex with Kenny Drew. Then I saw the tune list and went, what the fuck? This was just released! For the life of me I can't imagine why this has gone into print, out of print, and been reissued in the space of barely 18 months.

Yeah, Brown and the first inning is just getting ridiculous, especially after his last start when he pitched OK at the start. For your sake, RJ's groin better be a minor tweak and not a trip to the DL.
