I think you know exactly who I am referring to.

Kenny Drew and NHOP? Tete Montoliu and NHOP? I'll take them any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Cables and whoever else was in the Columbia era bands.

You mean Henry Winkler was intended to be a role model? I always thought he was meant to be sending up hipsterism. More cross-Atlantic signal distortion. For a role model I much preferred: This is ridiculous. Now we're getting into role models? "Cool" as it is used for the purposes of this thread, has nothing to do with being a role model. Only a select few are "cool" and they are certainly not an every man like Barney Rubble. Talk about cross-atlantic distortion: perhaps you should excuse yourself from this particular discussion of "cool" because clearly you are the one person who does not get what everyone else has no trouble with. BTW, thanks for the demonstration of "two people separated by a common language".

Alan's site has been listing August 2 as the date.

Then maybe it is "Blues March" after all, but why would composer credit be given to Carmell?
-
I found a website listing a Carmell Jones/Harold Land PJ 45, "Blues March." Checking the Mosaic Select, I saw that "Sad March" appeared on the Remarkable Carmell Jones album, so I emailed the store and they confirmed that its a Carmell Jones composition. I wrote back that it must be a mistake on the label, that "Sad March" somehow became "Blues March" and now they've responded by saying "definitely Blues March." Is it possible that the group recorded "Blues March" for a single release? I'm thinking that the guy has no idea what "Blues March" sounds like, he's just saying that the label definitely says "Blues March" but I figured I'd put it up here and see what you folks know. Thanks

I hate to suggest it, but I wonder if it goes back to his turn toward soul jazz in the 60s? Maybe if he'd stayed a bebopper he'd be more recognized as the "elder" that he is ... Just the first thing that popped into my mind. But don't you think Lou gets his respect, regardless of whether the jazz pubs pay attention?

How is Tiger Woods Gonna Eat This Weekend????
Dan Gould replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You don't have to be married to Tiger's wife specifically for that to be true. I bet all the other guys who are married and missed the cut could console themselves in the same way. Its just that Tiger might have a bit more fun. -
Voices of the dead, or voices in your head?
Dan Gould replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Anyone watch 'Ghost Hunters" on SciFi this past fall? I found the website of the group that is featured in the show and they have some downloads of EVPs. They don't have to be deciphered from white noise of a TV (how could you stand listening to it long enough to hear anything?); they will test the "haunted" locations they investigate by running a tape recorder in an otherwise quiet room. And I have to say, some of the clips on the website are pretty unmistakeable. In one, against a strong background hum (the levels were low) an investigator is heard saying, "That's the way it always is," followed immediately by the unmistakeable voice of a woman saying "don't let them hurt me". Its not random noise being "interpreted" or "ordered" by the mind, its as clear and distinct from the background noise as the voice of the investigator is. Another investigation captured a child's voice saying "hey Daddy" and "can I come in?" and they're both clear as day. -
As you say, there is most definitely a cross-Atlantic divide on the word "cool": Used for the purposes of this thread, "cool" is best epitomized by this man: It has nothing to do with affectation, or being too hip for the audience.

Not true. Dexter Gordon certainly comes across as a very warm personality, but his stage announcements and demeanor are the height of cool.

Philly player. This is a nice one:

FWIW, Lon, its one of the few Dex-with-Cables CDs I've retained. B-) And I know you like Cables more than I do Is there any indication that alternates or unissued material will be included in these?

I don't think its just the elderly who fall prey to the Nigerian scam, though one would hope that as long as it has been going on and as much attention is given to it, they'd be having a harder time finding the next sucker to scam. But then again, supposedly one is born every minute ...
-
Then you have to be the only person in the world who hasn't previously gotten Nigerian Scam emails. Congratulations. Since they've got your email now, you can look forward to heart-rendering stories like the poor Queen who's been run out of her country and needs a gullible American to help her regain her fortune. Not to mention the corrupt beauracrats who have been double dipping funds from oil contracts into a separate account, but strangely enough need an American to help them get the money out of the country. You can pocket 30% of the net proceeds!!! Personally, I find the penis enlargement spam to be much more clever, even if they prey on slightly different male fantasies: big bucks v. big dick.
-
How exactly are they "getting" clever? This is a standard Nigerian email, cousin to the "My Father, the dead oil minister" version, and I must have gotten it for the first time at least five years ago. Its not new, its not different, and they're certainly not getting clever.
-
No offense friends, but should this not be restricted to personal expierence. Stage presence has to be witnessed first hand. I disagree, because I never saw Dexter Gordon in person but I've listened to his stage announcements on a countless number of recordings and seen brief videotape of him, and I think its fair to base my judgement on that exposure.
