And I just found this interesting Wingate listing:
-
Just found one of the Stitts, but not the one with Marr. http://www.estoreuk.net/northernsoul/listings/77.html
-
I'm on it! Do ya think "Hank's Groove" and "Stitt's Groove" are the same tunes?
-
Yeah, its Wingate 012 that the dealer has. Do you know if its straight organ or with a tenor? As far as King/Federal goes, I was only aware of the Club 502, Greasy Spoon, and Sounds from the Marr-Ket Place albums, it sounds like they grabbed another tune from another King LP for the Federal 45. Thanks for the help, Mike.
-
Two questions, if anyone can help: I've found a 45 on Wingate records - would this be the same Hank Marr who recorded for King and later for Doubletime? There's also a Marr 45 on Federal, which I understand was a King subsidiary. Is it safe to assume that Federal 45s were edits of his King hits like Greasy Spoon? The strange thing is that the flip side is "I Can't Go On" which I don't think appears on any of the three King LPs ... Thanks!

How you converse when you don't want
Dan Gould replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No kids here either, but I hear that for a certain length of time, you can try spelling out certain key words in order to keep the conversation secret. Or does that work better with dogs? (Has the dog been O-U-T yet?) -
Of course. And what a sloppy game going on in the Bronx today. A-Rod throws a sure double-play ball into right field, and Pavano gives up a three run and a two run homer, 5-0 Mariners. Then Moyer loads the bases with nobody out and by the time the inning was over, it was 5-5.

Thanks all (I like Keiko, and easier to pronounce, too) (and Alice was my first suggestion, Aggie) but unfortunately, I just got back from a second visit to the shelter to see how the two would get along. First visit was pretty good - she was very friendly to him, although it was weird because for the first time ever, he actually acted indifferent to another dog. But they seemed to get along pretty well, no growling or anything, so that's why we were planning to do the adoption, pending one more visit. Well, this time, things did not go well. It was as if something finally clicked in his neutered brain, and he said, "hey! We got us a female here. I'm gonna give her some lovin'!" and she really, really did not appreciate that. Guys, how often has that happened ... you misread the signs, you think you're gonna get some, and before you know it, you're headin home all by your lonesome. None of this with one of these and you're left like this So, now its back to the original plan: Keep an eye out for a Weimaraner puppy. He's already shown that he likes puppies, I'm sure he would do fine raising it and it would be no threat to his position as alpha dog. And I've already got a name picked out, ever since I decided a long time ago that I wanted a Weimaraner: old "Blood and Iron" himself, Otto Von Bismarck. Could use "Otto" or "Bismarck". I think its the perfect name for a German breed.

Lookin For Lou Donaldson Live Bootlegs
Dan Gould replied to Soul Stream's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yes, Rooster, I think people call some items "greymarket" when their legality isn't clear. Shrink, point taken, but the issue I did not touch on is the fact that a short time ago, Jim Alfredson tried to tamp down the open solicitation of burns of commercially available recordings, so it seems to me that openly soliciting something that you identify as 'bootlegs' is also treading on potentially thin ice, if the music industry spends anytime searching the web for that sort of thing. And finally, Mike, glad you've enjoyed those recordings so much, I am going to send a PM in about sixty seconds. -
My wife wants to adopt another dog, and she's found one that, aside from the different color coats, is clearly the same breed (or mix) as Coltrane is. The dog is a very refined princess type, and the breed is Japanese, so my wife's idea is to use the Japanese word for "lady". Can anyone help me out and give an aglicized and phonetic spelling of the Japanese word for "Lady"? If its easily pronounced and not too hard to spell, that will definitely be under consideration. Otherwise, in keeping with the jazz theme of Coltrane's name, I suggested "Ella" since she was the First Lady of Song. Or we could go with Billie, since she was Lady Day. Thanks for the help!

Lookin For Lou Donaldson Live Bootlegs
Dan Gould replied to Soul Stream's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Mike, I might suggest changing your thread title to "... live private recordings." I mean, you're not really looking for bootlegs in the sense of commercial recordings of questionable provenance. You're only looking to trade for private recordings that are circulating amongst fans. I think I've got one or two more since the ones I set you up with back in the days of Board Krypton, so I'll send you a PM later today. -
I would think that if you want to continue to do business with credit card companies, the competition among the processing companies ought to be good enough that if you don't like the deal you've got right now, you can find something better pretty easily. Of course, that may not be the case for someone who may go several months with no credit card sales - the competition tends to be based on giving reasonable prices to people who are going to make up for it in volume of sales. Maybe Paypal is the best compromise, I've certainly used it without hesitation for quite a while now. And I even gave them my bank #, so I have the option of not adding to my debts when I can.

This isn't quite what you're after, I don't think, but I'll always regret the fact that Grant Green and Gene Harris never made a recording worthy of release. Two masters of the blues, you'd wish they'd done their thing together - it would have made a tremendous match with Blue Hour, IMO.

I honestly hated all that shit back when i was a kid, but when I was in Grad School I was introduced to Tetris and it became highly addictive, until the lady who ran the Social Sciences Computing Facility had it removed from all of the mainframe computers when she walked in one day, and there were undergrads who needed to use them, and every single computer was occupied by a Grad Student who was playing Tetris! So, thanks, Chris, for that link up above, and DAMN YOU for getting me hooked again! If my wife divorces me cuz she never sees me again, I'm comin' to live with you, wherever you end up moving. So make sure you find a place with enough room for TWO extra large jazz collections, OK?

Well, the Yanks have had a nice run of pitching and the first three game win streak since the ALCS. 'Course, we know what that streak led to. Meanwhile though, an interesting stat I heard last night: Since Schilling and Wells went on the D.L., Sox starters are actually 9-0. And Wade Miller had a nice first start on Sunday: 5 innings, three hits, two runs, six strikeouts and 1 walk, with a fastball consistently at 92-93 and a sharp, sharp curve. And the three guys left behind when Schilling and Wells went down look like this: Arroyo, 4-0, ERA of 3.18 Wakefield, 4-1, ERA of 3.18 Clement, 4-0, ERA of 3.35 Yeah. I think we'll be OK.

Crouch on Percy Heath
Dan Gould replied to chris's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Number one, that wasn't meant as an obituary of Heath, the person. So he doesn't deserve to be attacked for not talking about Heath. Number two, Crouch is spot on about the MJQ as John Lewis conceptualized it. Lewis did aspire to a higher class presentation to a higher class of audience. Personally, I have never had any problem with what Crouch says about the "music" created today by African-American youth. It is crap and ought to be identified as such. And he is certainly not the only black writer to decry what this popular music presents. -

Staggering. And then there's this: Uh, correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you just leave the box intact on the shelf until you are ready to open it, drink the first can, and use the box as a dispenser?
