  1. First of all, I'm in! Secondly, I may be confused, maybe we've gotten out of the groove due to the recent extended delay, but I thought signups start when the discussion starts, and shipping is sometime around the posting of answers to the current BFT? Since there will be sub-distributors in the States, I think its a very good idea to get things moving sooner rather than later. Sending PM momentarily
  2. Thanks for posting this, Mike. Normally I'm reading the NYT on Sundays, but my schedule isn't allowing it. But since you posted the link, I was able to catch the article.
  3. Actually, you did (see above). That's why I objected.
  4. I also find it hard to believe there are people who don't recognize the talent that Phil Hartman had.
  5. Let me ask you this, have you used your thre year old again to make these sorts of decisions?
  6. You know, I've been thinking about my own "don't get enough respect" thread dedicated to Houston Person. My wife and I saw him this winter in Fort Lauderdale and it was a tremendous show, though the greaze wasn't quite as thick, since he brought a pianist with him, no organ. So we got more of the American Songbook tunes that he's been doing on his Halfnote albums. We definitely weren't complainig though! Houston's a master, and with Teddy Edwards and Stanley T. gone, no one who digs big toned tenor should sleep on this guy.
  7. Check out this Ebay auction. There's a link to Jack's cut, though I'm a bit afraid to click on it. If someone has more guts than I do, please report back. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4728933928&rd=1 Then the same dealer offers this Burt Reynolds album, also with a sound sample link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4728941368&rd=1 Be afraid. Be very afraid.
  8. There's a Louis Smith BN with Cannonball that's worthwhile, and he's recorded quite a bit for Steeplechase. He's a solid, if not particularly original trumpeter. Donald Byrd might be a good comparison: usually nice playing, not necessarily the very best though, y'know?
  9. The problem with five-card draw is that there's almost no skill involved. Either you're bluffing or you aren't, but it's nearly impossible to ascertain what the probability is of this because you can never see any of the cards in a person's hand. Stud and hold-em type games introduce a lot more skill into the game. ← So you say, but it was good enough for Paul Newman and Robert Shaw and the whole MASH gang, too.
  10. I have to ask, whatever happened to simple five card draw? That's the only poker game I've fooled with and the only one I'm interested in? Does anyone even play it anymore? I guess its not tv-friendly.
  11. Oops, my bad.
  12. All of these are excellent recommendations, but don't skip his later recordings either. This one, if you can find it on 32 Records, is quite nice:
  13. Well, Vonzell is finished, though I think she's talented enough to have a future. I've started a job with evening hours, so I haven't seen the last two episodes and won't be watching the final either, but I do think its an interesting matchup, country vs rock. Isn't this the first time since the inaugural year that there's no black performer in the final? I think it will be real interesting to see who comes out on top, just considering the voting patterns of past seasons. On consistent performance, I would rate Bo ahead of Carrie, though I haven't been as down on her appeal as some people are. On the other hand, I think the odds favor Carrie because I suspect the audience skews younger, and that will work in her favor. In fact, if this show were on in the mid-late 90s, when country radio was so huge, I'd have rated Carrie an overwhelming favorite. But I still think she'll win.
  14. Actually, according to the Carmell site Mike Fitzgerald linked above, I'm Gonna Go Fishing is the A side, "Blues March" was the B side. Strange too that the site lists "Sad March Part 1" and Sad March Part 2" as the other 45s that were issued from The Remarkable Carmell Jones. Maybe they stuck one of the two Sad March edits onto the flip side simply because they'd already edited it down? Maybe they changed the title so that it wasn't clear that they were selling two 45s but only three tracks, so people would buy the "Fishin" 45 and think they were getting a new song?
  15. I think you know exactly who I am referring to.
  16. Kenny Drew and NHOP? Tete Montoliu and NHOP? I'll take them any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Cables and whoever else was in the Columbia era bands.
  17. You mean Henry Winkler was intended to be a role model? I always thought he was meant to be sending up hipsterism. More cross-Atlantic signal distortion. For a role model I much preferred: This is ridiculous. Now we're getting into role models? "Cool" as it is used for the purposes of this thread, has nothing to do with being a role model. Only a select few are "cool" and they are certainly not an every man like Barney Rubble. Talk about cross-atlantic distortion: perhaps you should excuse yourself from this particular discussion of "cool" because clearly you are the one person who does not get what everyone else has no trouble with. BTW, thanks for the demonstration of "two people separated by a common language".
  18. Alan's site has been listing August 2 as the date.
  19. Then maybe it is "Blues March" after all, but why would composer credit be given to Carmell?
  20. I found a website listing a Carmell Jones/Harold Land PJ 45, "Blues March." Checking the Mosaic Select, I saw that "Sad March" appeared on the Remarkable Carmell Jones album, so I emailed the store and they confirmed that its a Carmell Jones composition. I wrote back that it must be a mistake on the label, that "Sad March" somehow became "Blues March" and now they've responded by saying "definitely Blues March." Is it possible that the group recorded "Blues March" for a single release? I'm thinking that the guy has no idea what "Blues March" sounds like, he's just saying that the label definitely says "Blues March" but I figured I'd put it up here and see what you folks know. Thanks
  21. I hate to suggest it, but I wonder if it goes back to his turn toward soul jazz in the 60s? Maybe if he'd stayed a bebopper he'd be more recognized as the "elder" that he is ... Just the first thing that popped into my mind. But don't you think Lou gets his respect, regardless of whether the jazz pubs pay attention?
  22. Steve Albert Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey
  23. You don't have to be married to Tiger's wife specifically for that to be true. I bet all the other guys who are married and missed the cut could console themselves in the same way. Its just that Tiger might have a bit more fun.
  24. Anyone watch 'Ghost Hunters" on SciFi this past fall? I found the website of the group that is featured in the show and they have some downloads of EVPs. They don't have to be deciphered from white noise of a TV (how could you stand listening to it long enough to hear anything?); they will test the "haunted" locations they investigate by running a tape recorder in an otherwise quiet room. And I have to say, some of the clips on the website are pretty unmistakeable. In one, against a strong background hum (the levels were low) an investigator is heard saying, "That's the way it always is," followed immediately by the unmistakeable voice of a woman saying "don't let them hurt me". Its not random noise being "interpreted" or "ordered" by the mind, its as clear and distinct from the background noise as the voice of the investigator is. Another investigation captured a child's voice saying "hey Daddy" and "can I come in?" and they're both clear as day.
