caiman or casacaiman on Amazon or half
Dan Gould replied to dova's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think you are misrepresenting Casa's system. They do not wait for you to complain, when they discover that something was sold and is not available, they do order it. Their communication in these situations can be greatly improved and yes, their are inventory problems. But there's no evidence whatsoever that they wait for someone to complain before they try to get the CD in question. Look, you pay your money and you takes your chances. If you've let them keep your money on unavailable CDs for three months, its as much your fault as it is theirs. Other people here seem to understand how it works, and they request (and receive) refunds when it becomes apparent that something cannot be found. Waiting three months ... I'd say you're a co-dependent in this dysfunctional relationship. Or else, you really don't care that much about the fact that your card was charged, and you are perfectly happy leaving the order open, wondering if they every find the CD or issue a credit. -
You have got to be kidding. If you're looking for a board for smooth, be assured that 99% of the people here like their jazz chunky.

I don't know that the look is all that bad ... but I guess the question is, did he know why he was there or did his friends/family just arrange to have him attend? But its probably a good sign when someone makes public appearances-at least, compared to the alternative.

Ray Charles Great Hits Recorded in 8 Track Stereo?
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thanks. I figured as much. -
Definitely extract the CDA files to wav, then burn your CDR.

Got this from Allan in today's mail and stuck it right into the stereo. Believe everything that's been said on this thread and get your email to Allan to get your copy pronto! Percy does not disappoint and it is very nice to have him stretching out like this. Thanks again, Allan! One question though: Did Percy often perform with no drummer? Was he a no-show for the gig or did Percy prefer no drummer set-ups on his own gigs? If anyone's wondering, you don't miss the drummer one bit. BTW, I'm glad to report that I hunted down a copy of the Oliver Jackson/Percy France Black & Blue LP that Chuck mentioned earlier. Should have it by the middle of next week. B-)

Stumbled across an Atlantic comp. of Ray Charles hits, "Recorded in 8 Track Stereo". Notes by Leonard Feather (DANGER Will Robinson, DANGER! going on at length about this "new, state-of-the-art recording technique" bringing out the best in Ray, blah blah blah. Noticed that the track listing/personnel usually had Ray on the right channel, and then some further separation in the center and on the left. So my question is, is anyone familiar with this animal? Does this remastering produce some astounding results? Should I have snagged it? (I might have taken a chance, at $7 when I looked at one side which was pristine, but the other side had a pretty nasty scratch through pretty much the whole side, I'd have spent the rest of the weekend cleaning up the pops, assuming it would play through.) Thanks!

How does it make u feel when u start a thread...
Dan Gould replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
I just had this happen to me when it wasn't even true! -
No, I have it on vinyl but hardly ever, ever pull it out.

If it was I missed it. Is there such a thread? Jeez, right when the whole board is talking about orphan threads and thread killing posts ...

The discussions about WM and EAI and the AG and Free Improv, it got me wondering ... how adventurous are you? Do you concentrate on expanding your horizons as much as possible or do you continue to till your well trod favorite fields, as it were? When jazz was new to me, I went in many many directions in my jazz explorations. But eventually I settled into the pre-fusion era and yes, some of the Young Lion revivalists. Call me close-minded, but I know what I like and that's what I add to the collection. So what about you? Do you keep expanding your horizons, checking out everyone and everything or do you stick mostly with the tried and true?

I've collected my belly button lint and knitted a hat. Its yours for $1000.

a tiny rant/question on selling Mosaics for profit
Dan Gould replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So we still have a deal for $4? -
No, it pre-dated the Collector's Choice series. I remember seeing the reference in the liners to "In New York" that there had been a reciprocal arrangement and a Blue Note recording and I thought, "damn, I want that recording!" and then one day on a music hunting trip to New York City, I stumbled across the CD and pounced. Was there only one extra track? For some reason I am thinking that the domestic issue had two alternates ... but maybe I'm wrong. I'll try to check at home tonite.
-
Actually, there was. Mine is an early 90s domestic version that came out at the same time that the reciprocal "In New York" was reissued as a PJ.

AMG says this 1959 date is Ashby's first as a leader-anyone know of it? Worth it if its cheap? Still worth it if its expensive? Anyone know the sidemen? Thanks!

Stan the Man?

Off the top of my head, I would get the Montreux set with Junior Mance, and Jumpin' The Blues with Wynton Kelly. Then maybe one of the two with James Moody.

a tiny rant/question on selling Mosaics for profit
Dan Gould replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Let's face it, folks: When it comes to jazz and Mosaics, we're all Communists like Alexander: It is the right of the people to own all Mosaic sets, in perpetuity, at no cost to themselves! Open the vaults! He who will not reissue shall lose all rights and privileges in favor of the collective good of all jazz fans! Damn, I sound like the Red Menace. -
I think its a great idea to honor Jimmy by changing avatars to fave Smith albums. Its nice to see different albums, one after the other, all featuring this master musician and organ giant.

a tiny rant/question on selling Mosaics for profit
Dan Gould replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well then, I guess the free market does work: Cadence has it in stock, and I think their price is a bit lower, so I guess I'll have to take my business to them. -
a tiny rant/question on selling Mosaics for profit
Dan Gould replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Allen, is definitely not greed when a legitimate auction creates a purchase price of $900. It would be greed if someone offered the set for $900, set price. The market may not be truly "free" but no one is forcing anyone to bid a Mosaic set to that level, or for that matter, willingly accepting a set price of $900 either. -
a tiny rant/question on selling Mosaics for profit
Dan Gould replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, but will you teach it, or do some re-educating, I mean, teaching alternative theories? I just had a vision of the Seinfeld episode when the communist who Elaine is dating starts indoctrinating Kramer, who promptly loses his job as the Department Store Santa. "He's a Commie! He's a Commie!" ********************* As far as Chris' point about the sets being in the hands of people who want the music, that's as silly as the complaints about auctions that generate high bids because of the rareness of the item. If someone grabs an OOP Mosaic just to turn a profit, do you think they're sitting on it, or putting it on ebay to make their money? The only people with Mosaic sets who are biding their time, waiting to sell are our wives, who will be unloading them someday. The guys who grab a Mosaic to sell at profit are gonna get rid of that sucker pretty damn quick: its stock, not an investment. So its going to end up with someone who wants it for the music very quickly. -
Yeah, they'd have to include the Gloria Smythe material and I don't think that would be a great attraction. Hey, I tracked that sucker down a few years back, and Sangrey liked it! Great groups backing her up ... and I like what she does with "When You're Smiling"! B-)
