  1. I take it its a private recording source? Or do you have some obscure LP?
  2. I have on its way to me what seems an extraordinarily rare bit of Bird-ology. The info I have is this: Charlie Parker at Zorthian's Ranch Charlie Parker, Frank Morgan (as); Don Wilkerson (ts); Amos Trice (p); Dave Byrant (b); Lawrence Marable (d) Altadena, CA, 8 July, 1952 Is anyone aware if this has ever been issued before, legitimately or not? Would it be a radio broadcast or a private recording? I checked the first Parker Discography site brought up by Google and could find no info. But I gotta say, the thought of Bird and Morgan with Don Wilkerson has got me salivating!
  3. Interesting: It looks like the Tina Brooks Mosaic set has settled into the $60 range, which makes my selling it for $100 a pretty good deal. On the other hand, if you've got a nice copy of True Blue, it looks like that sucker goes for $2000+ every time.
  4. In honor of Matt Groenig's Birthday, D'OH!!! But in my defense, isn't there a similarity there? Or maybe I'm just thinking of the dude who played him in the SNL spoofs ....
  5. Isn't that the same mug as the guy who hosted "Bill Kirschner's Rock Concert"? I actually remember it more for the SNL parody than I do for the show, but isn't it the same dude?
  6. I agree that at this point everyone should back off because they're adults, but I also have to say, sorry Alexander, but Finch is supposed to be 17 or 18, which is light years from being 12, which is what the kid was when Mary Kay had her way with him. Let alone the difference in authority of a teacher versus a horny 40 year old mother of a classmate.
  7. Thanks, for clarifying that, Mark!
  8. I have to say that I fall in with the group who are questioning Hank Jones' story. The dates just don't make sense. I'd be curious about the context of the conversation with Allen. Were you talking to Hank about Monroe? About her singing Happy Birthday to JFK? About Arthur Miller? What triggered Hank's memory? Its certainly possible Miller hit Monroe, but it doesn't seem logical that it happened after the birthday performance. As far as Miller's career goes, count me as one who regards Death of a Salesman as a masterwork. The CBS broadcast of the play with Hoffman as Willy and Malkovitch as the son was stunning.
  9. Arthur Miller was crapped on? Guess I should go take a look at that thread.
  10. Well I'm confused now because at least two other people were telling us that this kind of expense is deductible. I thought the law distinguishes between structural things like a new roof and remodelling a room.
  11. There's no income tax in Florida, so it does seem to me a relatively simple return. I understand we deduct closing costs and property tax as well as mortgage interest . . . we put about $6000 into the new roof and the new A/C unit. As Capital Improvements, aren't they also deductible? I think we will use the program we've been using (we've always filed electronically anyway) and see how it does. I would think that when we enter the amount for mortgage interest, its going to kick us into a whole nother section and start asking about when we brought the house, closing costs, etc. and put them all in their right place and work out fine. Now, when my wife's mortgage broker career takes off and she starts looking at quarterly filings, we'll definitely be in need of a decent accountant. But for now, I'm hoping we can get this done ourselves.
  12. The question about refinancing closing costs reminds me: Does anyone have advice for me and my wife, first time homeowners in the 2004 tax year? Is it really best to find an accountant or use H&R Block? My wife was ready to go to Block but she did some investigating online and found many horror stories of hidden charges and questionable business practices and no longer has any interest in using them. We've previously used a tax filing program (can't recall the name at the moment) that's been pretty straightforward. My thought is that its almost certainly just as effective for homeowners. Right now, my advice to her is to go ahead and download the program, throw the numbers in and see what it kicks out. But any tax advice for new homeowners is greatly appreciated!
  13. Did they have as much fun as you did? I ask because I don't remember any enforced Valentine's activities by the time I reached the age where kids are dating. No enforced card giving, no candies, and certainly no surrepticious matchmaking in the Honors Class (or so I heard). Happy Valentine's Day, y'all!
  14. Does "opening doors for remarkable players" include Wynton?
  15. I'm guessing then that this is one of the Newman RCA recordings that our Spanish friends have "reissued"?
  16. I think you are misrepresenting Casa's system. They do not wait for you to complain, when they discover that something was sold and is not available, they do order it. Their communication in these situations can be greatly improved and yes, their are inventory problems. But there's no evidence whatsoever that they wait for someone to complain before they try to get the CD in question. Look, you pay your money and you takes your chances. If you've let them keep your money on unavailable CDs for three months, its as much your fault as it is theirs. Other people here seem to understand how it works, and they request (and receive) refunds when it becomes apparent that something cannot be found. Waiting three months ... I'd say you're a co-dependent in this dysfunctional relationship. Or else, you really don't care that much about the fact that your card was charged, and you are perfectly happy leaving the order open, wondering if they every find the CD or issue a credit.

    Boney James

You have got to be kidding. If you're looking for a board for smooth, be assured that 99% of the people here like their jazz chunky.
  18. I don't know that the look is all that bad ... but I guess the question is, did he know why he was there or did his friends/family just arrange to have him attend? But its probably a good sign when someone makes public appearances-at least, compared to the alternative.
  19. Thanks. I figured as much.
  20. Definitely extract the CDA files to wav, then burn your CDR.
  21. Got this from Allan in today's mail and stuck it right into the stereo. Believe everything that's been said on this thread and get your email to Allan to get your copy pronto! Percy does not disappoint and it is very nice to have him stretching out like this. Thanks again, Allan! One question though: Did Percy often perform with no drummer? Was he a no-show for the gig or did Percy prefer no drummer set-ups on his own gigs? If anyone's wondering, you don't miss the drummer one bit. BTW, I'm glad to report that I hunted down a copy of the Oliver Jackson/Percy France Black & Blue LP that Chuck mentioned earlier. Should have it by the middle of next week. B-)

  23. Stumbled across an Atlantic comp. of Ray Charles hits, "Recorded in 8 Track Stereo". Notes by Leonard Feather (DANGER Will Robinson, DANGER! going on at length about this "new, state-of-the-art recording technique" bringing out the best in Ray, blah blah blah. Noticed that the track listing/personnel usually had Ray on the right channel, and then some further separation in the center and on the left. So my question is, is anyone familiar with this animal? Does this remastering produce some astounding results? Should I have snagged it? (I might have taken a chance, at $7 when I looked at one side which was pristine, but the other side had a pretty nasty scratch through pretty much the whole side, I'd have spent the rest of the weekend cleaning up the pops, assuming it would play through.) Thanks!
  24. I just had this happen to me when it wasn't even true!
