  1. I'd be very interested in what else this article had to say about Hank during this period. I think I've heard on this board that Hank found the pickings pretty slim when he went to Europe, but I'd like to know more about this era. any chance we can prevail upon you to transcribe the article for us like Jim did himself not too long ago?
  2. OK, that must have happened when I was buried in work two weeks ago and wasn't looking at Politics at all.
  3. I was going to put this in the Offering section, but what the hey, I'll just Pay it Forward: Herb Ellis, Roll Call on Justice Records. Mel Rhyne on organ here, and fair warning: Johnny Frigo is on violin. But trust me when I say this is a very fine CD, with Ellis giving some of his nicest blues-oriented performances I've heard (and while I'm not a big violin fan, Frigo sounds perfectly fine to me). Its also the first time Ellis recorded with an organ. I talked myself into buying this yesterday and of course discovered that I already have it as soon as I got home. So my misfortune can be someone else's gain. That's how kharma works, right?
  4. In lieu of a Hoffman Forum approved PM, I'd like to publicly point out that the correct phrase is "peace of mind."
  5. In other words, Tom, you consider the Politics Forum to be something like the crazy aunt who lives in the attic, or the red-haired bastard stepchild: Something to be kept hidden from all casual acquaintances and only revealed to people who "join the tribe". Clearly you're quite proud about what goes on in the Political Forum, just like everyone loves their crazy aunts and their red-haired bastard step-children. As far as your other point about "politics" not being the focal point of the board, and by extension, Organissimo the group, that's just plain silly. Can you point to a single individual who has come to this board exclusively to post in politics? Even 1ngham, while posting in Politics at a rate to challenge Johnny for board leader, still manages to post about jazz elsewhere. And if you're point is really about what gets posted in Politics, and how opinions get expressed, well, doesn't that say a lot about the way the politically minded are arguing their points? And doesn't that say something about why politics might not really have a place in a jazz BB? You know, when I announced my departure from politics, it took some adjustment at first, but I quickly realized this was not something that was truly necessary to my enjoyment of the board. I think it would be a mighty interesting experiment to disable that forum for a couple of weeks or a month, and just let people deal. I wonder how many current political posters will discover that they really didn't have to post in politics. And really, what would the harm be? So you don't talk politics here for a couple of weeks. If the demand remains high, Politics goes back into action, and you guys have at it. There'll be as much politics to discuss a month from now as there is today.
  6. OK, correct me if I'm wrong, but exactly what has really changed? Seems to me, the big effect here is that people who have asked to have the Politics forum disabled (like me) will no longer be able to log out and take a look at the forum. For me, I would do this a couple of times a week, and it worked well as a reinforcement that my decision to leave that forum behind was a good one. You know, see some ridiculous posting, but know that I can't post a response, not wasting time thinking what I'd like to say-the stupidities inundating that forum quickly became like water off a duck's back. So, aside from completely disabling the forum for all members who didn't want to see it in the first place, what have you done? Now lurkers won't see it? Big deal, people! They were lurkers to begin with. If they ever register as members, they'll see the political forum and see this board in all its, ahem, glory. If the Politics forum was that bad, I think Jim should disable it for everyone, add a pinned announcement to the Miscellenous Forum that Politics is not to be discussed here, and see what happens. The idea that Politics will inevitably infest other forums is completely bogus, if a no-politics policy is strictly enforced. Or is someone so addicted to political vitriol that they'd turn a discussion pie vs cake into a Bush-thrashing fest? Personally, I'd think it would be a very interesting experiment to disable politics and see what happens. There are certainly many people here on both sides of the issue. Would it really kill people to have to go find a, perish the thought, a BB devoted to politics to satisfy that need?
  7. What I find annoying, FFA only touches on: The editing within scenes that, cumulatively allow one more thirty second spot. This is especially clear on Seinfeld episodes, where little bits and pieces have disappeared. Obviously it comes back to the almighty dollar, and considering the price paid for Seinfeld in syndication, I guess they've got to make their money back somewhere. But it still stinks.
  8. Its two separate recordings that I happened to pair up on a single CDR.
  9. Shawn, that's not Hardbop Chris Heaney. Different hardbop, and I don't think he's expressed a huge distaste of electric instruments. So there's no reason to assume he'd hate it.
  10. 11. Marla, I'm lucky, I found clean copies of both of the Uptown LPs just before the time that Chuck told us that a reissue was upcoming. Glad I sprung for them, considering the delay! Speaking of the post-Philly Joe Dameronia band, are you aware of this CD: Also with Kenny Washington. If you don't have it, it might be a nice reminder of the concert you saw. Very similar lineup to the Tully Hall show. Not sure how tough it is to get (its on Soulnote), but believe me, its worth the hunt!
  12. Marla, I hope Chuck will reply, but I know its been at least two years since he told us that at least one of the Dameronia albums was going to be reissued, and we're still waiting, wondering.
  13. This is just like how "Talk Like a Pirate Day" got started... Hmmm. I wonder if I can convince my wife that today is Love Day? How can you not make love on Love Day?! See my message above regarding spirit crushing illness. Wait a sec, you replied to that message, so you already know about reasons to not get any love on love day. Excuse me, Love Day.
  14. In addition to the scam Rooster mentions, the big one in South Florida - The Sun Sentinel did several stories about it - is on "local" moves: Quote a price on the phone. Show up and load up the truck. Go to the new home/apartment. Demand an exorbitant amount of money prior to unloading the truck, far in excess of what was quoted. Tell the person you're ripping off that according to the law, the stuff on the truck is the company's until they are paid, and this is what you are paid, blah blah blah. Generally, people are so desperate to get their stuff, they pay anything. another aspect of the scam is vaguely worded contracts that are signed before they pack the truck. That's where the padding of the bill starts, or the page with the final cost isn't there and is added afterward. There have been cases here where customers getting scammed have drawn guns, cops show up, and the cops won't mediate, they end up arresting the customer for waving his gun around. Just an unbelievable industry. And the worst thing: In Florida, there's a handful of these companies that operate like this as long as they can, the state catches up to them, and immediately, they're in business under a new name a week later, and a year after that, the state catches up with them again.
  15. Someone remembers Ghost Story??? Who?? Who remembers it??? Tell me what you remember!
  16. I'm sick as a dog so there ain't no love in my immediate future. So let me be the first to say, bah, humbug to Love Day!
  17. EA is running with some staggering talent for that show. A heckuva lineup, I'm jealous!
  18. Funny no one remembers Ghost Story. Like Kolchak, it lasted only one year. Guess Night Stalker got more attention back then.
  19. I just caught the first Kolchak episode, Jack the Ripper, on the Sci-Fi channel, inspiring this poll. Even though I was only about 8 or 10 years old, I have strong recollections of both these shows, or at least I do remember that a few of the Ghost Story episodes scared the crap out of me. Couldn't find any decent sites for Ghost Story, I did find this site for Night Stalker, which gives some interesting background on the show and how unhappy Darren McGavin ultimately was with the production and the network: http://www.darrenmcgavin.net/night_stalker1.htm Interesting tidbit I discovered in my searching: Both of these programs were originally created by Richard Matheson (well, Matheson wrote the first TV Movie that introduced the Kolchak character). And of course Matheson got his initial attention with his writing for Twilight Zone. So, my choice? I'm really torn because I realize now that when I was a kid, I wasn't sophisticated enough to appreciate the characters, and the interaction between Carl and his editor. It was all about being scared, and at 9 years old, it didn't take much to do that. Same of course, with Ghost Story: I just have strong memories of being really shaken up by a few episodes. I think that the debut episode had something to do with a pirate ship, and a haunted house, and a ghost who looks like the lady of the house and she sends the housekeeper away, on a dark and stormy night. And another one, something about a plane crash, and someone who didn't get on the plane being haunted by the colleagues who died in the crash. Funny how you can dredge up little tidbits of memories from nearly forgotten shows from 30 years ago. Anywhoo .... anyone else remember these shows? Which one would you want to watch again?
  20. Forget Jobim, I like him cuz he's a fellow DEXAHOLIC! Hope it was happy, Jim.
  21. At used LP stores, if I am interested in something that I think is a bit pricier than it deserves, I simply ask for some consideration. The main record store I shop at, I've developed a relationship with the owner and he usually comes down in price. The other store, they'll only haggle if I buy more LPs and since they often price regardless of condition, I don't often purchase there. Ebay and internet LP sites, what can you do? Getting outbid on ebay has nothing to do with rampant greed, it has everything to do with someone valuing a record higher than you do. Nothing you can do about that. I have very often found records I am looking for through google searches that lead me to some little shop that has it. But the purchase being impersonal - either through a shopping cart or en email or phone call, I find it impossible to engage someone in haggling. They've set their price, either I accept it or I don't. If the price is way out there, I just keep looking.
  22. Thanks. The good news is, this was not a complete shock and so planning was started ahead of time. Basically, in about six weeks, I expect to have my mortgage broker license in hand. There are big fees to be made in that field, and the critical added bonus is that as an independent contractor, I will always be free to continue to accept VO (Voice Over) work whenever it comes. We're also setting up my Music Room for audio recording, which will mean that I will also be free to expand my reach to get more VO work over the Net. So, mortgage broker will work out very well considering that, otherwise, in order to maintain availability for Voice Overs, I'd have to look at doing things like evening telemarketing, a jpb that isn't exactly conducive to sound marital relations as far as I am concerned. Leaving a company after six years (the longest continuous employment I've ever had) is no fun, but I've planned my work and now I'm working my plan!
  23. Unfortunately, we may not be getting to the rest of the Fathead, let alone the rest of the alphabet. Dan's A to Z is hereby officially suspended. This project was undertaken as a work-only listening activity, and my employment ended on February 28th. There is no way to know if I will be in a position to resume a listening regimen when I get a new job (I am not optimistic) and at this point, my home listening time will be taken up by the very, very large backlog I currently have. Perhaps at some point I will resume the A to Z at home, but one never knows what the future will hold, right? Thanks to all who enjoyed following my tracking of the collection, and to those who hated this thread, saw no purpose to it, or hated my jazz tastes, be thankful its in all likelihood terminated. Its just too bad you'll never find out just how many Cecil Taylor discs I have.

  25. This really had me confused so I checked AllMovie Guide. Catrall was in a Star Treck film, but it was hardly an early one. It was number six, The Undiscovered Country. So, I suspect that the person you were thinking of appeared in ly someone who back then was quite nice, IMO but is now. to borrow a phrase from SNL, "A rapacious swamp sow": Kirstie Alley in Star Trek II, with her Vulcan Ears: And looking mighty fine without them, back in the day" (sorry for turning this into the Babe thread. Maybe I could post a picture of Kirstie now, to make you forget what she looked like then?
