  1. Was that before or after he slugged the Clemson player?
  2. metres and centimetres? Dots and commas? I wouldn't be so quick to presume normalcy, my friend!
  3. Jazz may move away from the blues but I feel that if it goes too far away it will stop being jazz. Jazz comes from the blues. But in the end, modern jazz has little allure for me, so where it "goes" is not really of that much concern, frankly. That may mark me as living in the past, but for me, there's lots and lots of good music back there!
  4. Now that I remember what BMI is, there t'ain't no way I'm calculating it, let alone sharing it!
  5. Damn, I knew I'd forgotten one ...
  6. Since it seems like quite a few of us are fighting the battle of the bulge, which is it that gets you in trouble the most? What's your favorite? For me I tend to fall on the sweets side, though not so much candy as ice cream-especially Baskin Robbins Peanut butter chocolate.
  7. Ladies and Gentlemen, the inaugural Organissimo Blindfold Test has left the building! Fortunately for all concerned, Dr. J. provided enough $$ that no further assistance will be needed, unless there are latecomers inspired by this announcement. Daniel A. still needs to provide me his mailing address. Just in case I somehow missed someone, the following members have discs en route: Peter Johnson JSangrey relyles pryan Rooster Ties JimR. Noj b3-er Jim Dye Jazzmoose couw Brad Gary Initial discussion will go in this thread. After approximately two weeks, Dr. J. will post the answers in a new thread "Blindfold Test #1 - Answers and Further Discussion" so that people who are slow to take the "test" can still post without inadvertently finding out the answers. Use or B3-er, perhaps we need a new Forum for the Blindfold Tests?
  8. My one ironclad requrement is the least possible illumination (usually augmented with a pillow over my head anyway). I do a lot of shifting and I've also begun to snore on occasion, and my wife is a light sleeper to begin with, so she's the one who suffers. I, on the other hand, could easily sleep through a nuclear holocaust.
  9. Well, y'all know my opinion.
  10. Be interesting to see what these go for. I noticed a funky cover of "Grant's First Stand" in there.
  11. I'll bet many of you got this e-mail today: *************** Blue Note Records New Release Update ******************************** Rudy Van Gelder reissues ********************* All titles in the RVG Edition are remastered in 24 bit by legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. New RVGs include Art Blakey- Indestructible; Dexter Gordon- Our Man In Paris; Grant Green- Grantstand; Horace Silver- Horace Silver Trio; Sonny Rollins- Volume 1 and John Coltrane- Blue Trane. Upcoming RVGs include Joe Henderson- Mode or Joe; Jackie McLean- Let Freedom Ring; Lee Morgan- Search For The New Land; Bud Powell- The Scene Changes and Wayne Shorter- Adam’s Apple. Click The Link for audio samples or to view or purchase all titles in the RVG Edition http://www.BlueNote.com/RVG ******************* One of my pet peeves is people calling Blue Trane but what can you do when the label itself makes the same mistake? Really sad.
  12. Sure, John, send Paul in search of a CD that it took me two months and the gracious help of a couple of European board members before I tracked it down! Me and Greg kissing and making up might be easier to engineer! (Actually its a great suggestion, just not an easy one to find, which is a real shame.)
  13. Paul, Billy recorded a great deal with the Cedar Walton Trio as well as with Eastern Rebellion. One of my favorite live jazz memories is seeing in person why he was called "Smilin' Billy". He truly lit up the stage! I'll have to check, but in Art Taylor's book Notes and Tones doesn't Billy talk about his belief that the drums are like a woman and should be made love to?
  14. Thanks for the info, guys. When I realized Jim has a copy I tried to contact the seller to cancel the order but I doubt I caught him in time, so now I'll have a decision to make, whether to send the LP back when it arrives or go ahead and open it. I don't know-somehow the idea of minute long tracks isn't all that appealing. But maybe I can turn it around on ebay and actually clear some cash out of it.
  15. Its probably a completist purchase mostly. I do like the album overall, but the two pop covers get pretty monotonous. But the rest is pretty solid. It sounds like you can safely pass it by, though, doncha know, eventually it will be going for $400 on ebay?
  16. I just got an update list from one of my record dealers and I spotted this title and description: SESAC PA-231/2 Tyree Glenn Just A Minute!(DJ) VG+++ 25.00 (Above LP also feat. Sy Oliver,Joe Newman,Clark Terry,Seldon Powell,George Barnes,& others - this LP was only sent to radio stations in the U.S. in 1959 - never sold in stores!) So, I inquired as to what he means by "never sold in stores" and this was his response: "The LP only went to radio stations back in '59 - there were NO copies available for record stores - the only way you could get this LP(and there were others like it on the SESAC label) was to get it from a radio station - this label is highly sought after by collectors because there were NO copies ever sold in stores" So, my question is, can anyone shed any light on this label?
  17. Any gigs booked yet, Jim?
  18. Really terrible news. Knowing what you know, I would not have bothered with the threatening letter, I'd go straight to the AG of Texas and the BBB also. You can probably write off the $$ but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to hurt the bastards, one way or another.
  19. And one last "up". I've got about 12 "signups" and expect Tony's master disc to arrive in today's mail, so any final requests would be appreciated.
  20. Since we were discussing the waiver process, thought I'd post this from Peter Gammons ESPN column: Charting the waiver wire Here is this midweek's list of players who were blocked this month when they were placed on waivers: AL: Brendan Donnelly, Ben Weber, Alfredo Amezaga, Jason Johnson, Kerry Ligtenberg, B.J. Ryan, Bartolo Colon, Tom Gordon, Esteban Loaiza, Wilfredo Ledezma, Carlos Beltran, Raul Ibanez, Runelvys Hernandez, Eddie Guardado, Shannon Stewart , Jeff Nelson, Nick Johnson, Arthur Rhodes, Lance Carter, Travis Harper, Joe Kennedy, Victor Zambrano, Aubrey Huff, Francisco Cordero, Todd Greene, Frank Catalanotto. NL: Stephen Randolph, Jason Marquis, Kent Mercker, Horacio Ramirez, Jung Bong, Chris Reitsma, Ray Olmedo, Brian Fuentes, Justin Speier, Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre, Octavio Dotel, Brad Lidge, Wilson Alvarez, Danny Kolb, Richie Sexson, Luis Ayala, Javier Vazquez, Orlando Cabrera, Jose Vidro, Vladimir Guerrero, Brandon Duckworth, Joe Beimel, Kip Wells, Jim Brower, Jesse Foppert, Jerome Williams, Tim Worrell, Jose Cruz Jr. Wilson Alvarez. Wow. Some that got through that shocked me: Scot Shields, Danys Baez, John Thomson, Kelvim Escobar, Orlando Hudson, Mike Bordick, Luis Vizcaino, Mike DeJean, Livan Hernandez, Tomo Ohka.
  21. In the category of "Sappy Pop Ballads": Barry Manilow, "Can't Smile Without You" Gladys Knight, "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" I'm off for the weekend. In the meantime, y'all can decide whether to vote me off the island.
  22. Up one more time for more signups. I'll be out of town through Sunday, so I won't be able to acknowledge messages til then.
  23. Beri, Very sorry to hear of your Mom's condition/situation. It reminds me of my younger brother's experience. In his last year at Vanderbilt, he was constantly ill and ultimately ended up at Vanderbilt Medical Center, where cancer was suspected. In fact, while he was there having all of the tests done, his girlfriend stepped into the elevator with a couple of nurses, one of whom turned to the other one and said "Did you hear about that student, Peter Gould? Oh, its so sad-he has cancer." Which we hadn't even been told yet!! You can imagine his girlfriend's reaction. But get this-ultimately, the doctor's at Vandy decided it *wasn't* cancer and basically sent him on his way. By that December, he had graduated, moved to D.C., and found himself at Johns Hopkins, where in December of '95 they told him that he did have lymphoma, that it had spread to several locations and that there was a 20-25% five year survival rate. So, the lesson is as everyone has said-find decent doctors immediately. (So I don't leave you hanging and end this on a positive note, the short story is, I was a perfect match as a bone marrow donor, he's been cancer free for over 7 years now, and is now a graduate of William and Mary Law School and a lawyer in D.C. So don't give up hope!)
  24. I have approximately 12 purchased CDs awaiting first hearings, plus another BIG box of burns totalling no fewer than 58! That actually completed a trade wherein I sent his requests back in the spring, but I told him to hold off on sending my requests because at the time I saw a bit of light at the end of the tunnel and I didn't wish to be awash in music so soon-I even put the turntable back on the main system so I could reacquaint myself with some vinyl. And, I've actually been shuttling CDs back and forth to work such that, since the spring, I've actually gone through the entire alphabet, choosing music I haven't heard in a while. Right now I've got a stack of Ben Webster on the desk, I anticipate getting through the rest of the alphabet by the middle of September. So, even though I am feeling swamped again, I do feel pretty good about getting alot of "old" music back in the player. Too bad with a birthday and anniversary coming up next month, I'll be even more swamped before I even crack that big box o' burns!
  25. Yes indeed, and it seems to me the area around her bountiful boobs is a bit lighter than that image shows, "if you know what I'm talking about".
