1. Nice, swinging song. Reminds me of some older Gerry Mulligan but I think it's a newer recording....maybe. The drummer betrays a more classic style. Is the bari player the leader? Tenor sounds really good. 2. Ok, I just played another version of this tune the other day and Ive already forgotten the song name. Someone will guess it immediately. This is live obviously and the tenor opens very well. Good song but no guesses. Sounds like a group of players that are familiar though. 3. Not guessing this one either. I enjoy it though. The guitarist is in full control. The singer's style is reminiscent of some of the Braxton albums with vocals. I suspect this song won't be very popular here. It seems to deconstruct more and more as it goes on. 4. Trombone on fire for the opener here. Tone reminds me of Curtis Fuller a bit. 5. Ride cymbal coming through loud and clear. Drummer and pianist are really sympatico and it's nice to hear. No guesses. 6. Sounds like a banjo here. Not sure I know any jazz banjo player. 7. No ideas here either 8. Maybe Sam Jones on cello? 9. Another familiar tune. Don't know what it is about jazz but I can rarely remember song titles. Not a problem with other genres, go figure. Anyway, bluesy piano tune that I enjoy. No guesses. 10. Beautiful tenor playing. Trombone player is no slouch. Excellent tune. Dickenson and Hawkins? 11. Love the intro. Never heard this tune before. Very nice. McPartland? 12. Live and classical, and again I can't name this familiar tune. McLaughlin? 13. Piano heavy BFT. Great playing but no guesses. 14. Not sure of who this is either. Sounds like two alto saxes? Bass solo is good, and a good groove over the whole thing. 15. Piano intro again nails it. Good song! No ideas here though.

Awesome man. Thanks for putting this together and for managing the entire BFT system here. Great tunes that were a fun and educational listen.

Adjacent to this rec is that some metal band, somewhere, needs to incorporate the contrabass sax. Studio and live. Would be a trip to hear.

Playing some Sabbath in his memory. NIB is still a great tune and Children and the Grave (among others) were a template for heavy metal in the decades to come. Saw the '99 Sabbath reunion live and it was a great show. RIP. Helluva life

Good call. I knew I'd heard it somewhere else but could not think of it.

I'm only just now discovering that Sonny Sharrock kind of reworked John's Children from Byard Lancaster for his album Ask the Ages. Makes sense as Sharrock played on Byard's album. Any other songs out there that use this rhythm?

The Dorham, Hubbard and Mingus sets from earlier this year are excellent imo -

Damn, that price on the Desmond is crazy good. And I just bought a new one from Mosaic 😵

Allison Miller on #3 was fantastic. I also have the CD for track 7 but I missed it badly. Thanks for putting this together! Enjoyable!

1. Familiar enough tune that someone will guess straight away. Pianist is ridiculously good. Love the left hand. It's like a symphony coming out of those keys. Shaming myself with a guess but Byard? 2. Such great playing. Could listen to this saxophone all day. 3. Flautist is very good but I'm more drawn to the pianist here. Understated but active on the left. Love the bassist too. Rhythm trio portion is my fave of this song. 4. Good song, no guesses. The recording sounds of newer vintage but by established musicians. 5. I hear a Ben Webster influence on the hornsman. Definitely a well executed ballad. 6. Over too soon. Good song 7. Bud Powell? Something from one of the Blue Notes 8. Severinsen? 9. No idea on the singer but the guitar is reminiscent of Gabor. 10. Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered. No clue on vocalist. 11. Great follow up to number 10. Flows really well. Urgent playing. Love it but who would this be? Facility of Hubbard on the trumpet but more controlled. Hmmm...Sax player has plenty of force 12. Love it. Sounds live or otherwise audio-challenged but doesn't detract a bit. Excellent. Love the chanting but still no clue 13. Trying to guess this trombone player - nothing's coming up. Are they the leader? Seems like it. Interesting song. George Coleman-esque sax player but I don't think it's him. Great listen. I know there's some legends on this that I've completely missed.
