  1. Iverson's list has some gems but good lord it's maddening to read his articles. Anyway, he was spot on with the selection of Ellington's Piano Reflections and many others. The article's selections and the ones listed here will be fun to explore.
  2. Ah, good to know. I've heard so many versions of this tune but never knew exactly who did it first. I think that Crew Cuts version was used in the movie Road House as well. And spot on that being a Jamaican cover. Alton Ellis is a legendary singer there and his covers of American doo wop and soul are always worth a listen.
  3. Were the Chords the original? I've always loved this version from Alton Ellis:
  4. Didn't know Endea Owens was from Detroit. This looks fantastic. Congrats on the project!
  5. I've never studied that cover art before but noticed it also doesn't appear to use that law of thirds that Miles used for his designs. The pic of Larry himself is great though.
  6. Honestly a lot of them look fascinating. I picked up the Dorham and the In With The In Crowd books.
  7. The Ellington and James Johnson books look intriguing as well. I thought I saw 2 books on Duke but it was just one. Edit to correct again: there are 2 Ellington books. The second is Jack Chambers Tone Parallel.
  8. For sure. I'm of the opinion that one can't truly get an accurate history of anything in the US without accounting for organized crime syndicate involvement.
  9. Love that record and if there's any real complaint from me about these Black Jazz releases is that they're EPs instead of LPs. Kind of like that Sonny Fortune/Stan Hunter Trip On the Strip record.
  10. There are some titles there that I really like. But I've been shifting to downloads for the most part due to space issues. I think the concepts of the Tone Poet and Classic series are great, and I hope they continue doing them. Helluva legacy from this label.
  11. J Jazz collection from BBE.
  12. In the video he's playing a keyboard perched atop the B3 correct and it looks/sounds like a Rhodes - correct? Was this a common set up for Larry?
  13. Thanks for putting this all together and starting the thread. Definitely will explore this bc I'm not familiar with much of Stitt's work in collaboration with the organ.
  14. Exactly what I tell him. I'm not a house aficionado but I dig his music.
  15. Sklupperbep from Skeeter Shelton & Hamid Drake. The write up about the genesis of this project fascinated me and so dove in. Glad I did. It's excellent. https://skeetersheltonhamiddrake.bandcamp.com/album/sclupperbep
  16. props to anyone who's able to create an original Christmas hit and have it stick like that.
  17. He just got into jazz recently as well, and developed an enthusiasm for Bird that was contagious for me. Raising kids keeps him from the lab these days though. His Soundcloud link if interested:
  18. Between this and the Griot Galaxy release it's been a bandcamp bonanza lately.
  19. Well, the AI tools being used to create artists and music whole cloth will be the next thing. There's essentially a radio monopoly with IHeartMusic owning a lot of radio stations. I don't have any doubts they'll start AI'ing their own shit and well you can figure out how much money that will make them. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/meet-the-woman-behind-chart-topping-ai-artist-xania-monet-i-look-at-her-as-a-real-person/?intcid=CNR-01-0623 if you haven't seen the accompanying video to this article, it's embedded on the page and worth the 9 minutes to watch. The word "enshitifcation" is apropos. This is kind of like if I went to a professional kitchen and gave a chef some vague ideas of what I wanted them to cook and how I'd want it presented. Then, instead of giving credit to that chef for the resulting dishes, I'd just take the credit. And I wouldn't have to pay that chef anything.
  20. I don't really hear chord structures (at least consciously) nor do I think about them when I'm listening to jazz from any era. But I like jazz and it makes up the majority of stuff I listen to. I can't be enough of an outlier on that for Dankworth's opinion to be correct. I have a friend who plays guitar and produces house music. He definitely listens for chords, etc. When he talks to me about most music theory stuff I just kind of glaze over. I get some of it but overall I just don't care about it.
  21. I've never heard of this before but listening now and loving it. Thanks for the link.
  22. Representative of popular music on the radio these days. I'm not sure if any instruments are actually being played, but the synths and bass aren't terrible for the genre. The vapid lyrics are just so bad though, and combined with autotuned vocals it's kind of a miserable experience. I'm sure there's fans out there though.
  23. Great points. And what about those people that read several books at the same time, rarely finishing one before picking up another? Asking for a friend ...
