Lots of chopped up samples of everything from vibes (Mwamba’s a reasonably-known vibes player on the British scene, not sure of what his worldwide presence is) to dulcimer and a Swiss exercise ball, recorded a home on a laptop. Very much of the “MySpace generation”. I’m not sure that it’s jazz, really, but it’s aged surprisingly well for what it is. It’s available to sample on his Bandcamp page, if you fancy a taste. It lists the wines he was drinking whilst making it. From the list, I’m afraid to say that the Rioja in question probably wasn’t Spain’s finest export.

Cannonball Adderley - The Price You Gotta Pay To Be Free (Capitol, 1970) There's so much cool stuff happening on this record. Nice! I'm going to listen to this next.

Matt Brewer - Ganymede (Criss Cross, 2018) Great record, not at all what I associate with Criss Cross. Mark Shim is excellent on it. The only problem is the hideous dead eyed cover image. Who signed off on that?! Edit: Oops. Wrong thread. This is not on vinyl.

Masabumi Kikuchi - Susto (CBS, 1981) There’s a growing view in some circles that Miles Davis’ comeback records are worth a re-evaluation, alongside the not-so-recent reevaluation of his 1970s work and Hancock’s Mwandishi group. I’ve never been a hater when it comes to 80s Miles (or Marcus Miller), but I’m struck listening to this Kikuchi record at just how much better they could have been.

Just finished: Wolfgang Dauber Trio - Dream Talk (CBS 1964) and Roy Ayers - Coffy (Polydor, 1973) Now on: Bennie Wallace - Plays Monk (Enja, 1981) My first time listening to it. I wasn't actually aware of its existence until @HutchFan posted it above and then @Gheorghe followed with the lovely recollection. Was it a big deal at the time? A lot of these 1980s records slip through the gaps. They're not great for sampling or particularly "spiritual" so DJ culture has no interest in them, and the jazz marketing gods aren't bothered about exploiting their 1980s catalogues. Just another reason to look forward to the new blog.

I enjoy it. Not my favourite, but good. I agree she has something. I like the mix of her quite deep soft sound versus her sense of timing, which is more like an alto player's. I could do without the poems. Hopefully there is more development to come. How about you?
