  1. I always wonder what became of him.
  2. Interesting. So you would go for the earlier twofer out of the two? I own neither on LP, but this record has followed me since I was much younger, and I always wanted to (as you may be able to tell from the Avi). I'm currently listening to a first print Nonaah by Mr. Mitchell. No need for improvement there.
  3. One day I will own this.
  4. There's a new book out by Philip Freeman, who runs the Burning Ambulance newsletter, podcast and label, called Ugly Beauty: Jazz in the 21st Century. https://www.johnhuntpublishing.com/zer0-books/our-books/ugly-beauty-jazz-21st-century Has anyone come across it or read it? Any opinions?
  5. What's the Konitz connection? I'm intrigued.
  6. It has a great lineup.
  7. She's not that talkative, but from what I've seen, nothing gets the punters coming back through the door like Arthur Blythe's Metamorphosis. Time and time again.
  8. Unfortunately that is basic functionality. The youngest (11 months) is going through a charming stage where she pulls out my vinyl from the racks, admires it, sits on it and sometimes eats it. She has a particular taste for original India Navigation and Black Saint / Soul Note releases.
  9. Dealt with my problem in the end. I decided to go for a Rega Plenar 3 with an upgraded Exact cartridge. It's more than I had wanted to spend but in retrospect I am very glad I did. Thanks everyone for the advice. Certainly more intelligible than what was on offer from the Hoffs.
  10. Great record. Not an easy one to find, side B label or not
  11. Oh yes. Sorry. I’d hastily read the title of the thread as referring to one of his 1960s releases. It seems a bizarre thing to say. My only guess is that it might refer to Hawes’ role in West Coast jazz (Shorty Rogers, etc., rather than Harold Land) or his embrace of electric keyboards - both of which have been unpopular with critics at times. But “much maligned”?!
  12. When were the notes written?
  13. This is a nice one. I'm not sure how I missed it first time around.
  14. Association PC - Erna Morena (MPS, 1973)
  15. Currently also incredibly rare due to yeast shortages as a result of the pandemic.
  16. Martin Blume, Wilbert de Joode, and John Butcher - Low Yellow
  17. Human Arts Ensemble - Under The Sun (1974). I had never heard of The Society of the Creatively Concerned of Boston (TSOCC). Either way, this is a hell of a lot of fun.
  18. What is it? I feel like Pat Thomas might be the one musician whose stock has actually risen over lockdown. He's released the best albums of his career (my opinion) and is finally getting a few mentions. A close friend of mine who isn't even a jazz fan sees Pat Thomas as symbolic of "going out" (my fault: OTO) and texts me every time he's mentioned.
  19. Gianni Gebbia - People in Motion (2016) Quite a rough listen this early in the morning.
  20. Thanks Second the Ivo / Nate on BA. Have you had a chance to listen to any others?
  21. Just rebought Engraved for a family member’s birthday because I love it so much.
  22. Therese also been tribute type albums too, e.g. to Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk or Lennie Tristano. Braxton standards sets tend to be pretty divisive. He generally hands out pretty tough treatment to the tunes, which, depending on your view, is either a sign of a genius reinterpretation or a sign of someone who can't play / hasn't bothered to rehearse. Its provocative stuff. I'm personally half/half, but I don't really know the "more recent" (in the sense of post his entry into academia in 1985) standards sets. I'd be interested to know if anyone thinks any of them in particular stand out, including the new set.
