  12. Horizons Jazz Orchestra "The Brite Side" Format(s): Jazz HORIZONS JAZZ ORCHESTRA PAYS TRIBUTE TO COMPOSER/ARRANGER LEE HARRIS WITH THE BRITE SIDE Chartbound on the JazzWeek Chart HORIZONS JAZZ ORCHESTRA is a swinging contemporary big band comprising some of the finest musicians in South Florida. They are now releasing their debut CD, HORIZONS JAZZ ORCHESTRA PLAYS THE MUSIC OF LEE HARRIS, THE BRITE SIDE. LEE HARRIS was a baritone saxophonist, composer, and arranger who worked in New York City and Atlantic City. In 2016, Harris and trumpeter DENNIS NODAY, an alumnus of the Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson bands, co-founded and co-led SUPERBAND, a fresh, innovative big band that mainly performed Lee's compositions and arrangements. Because of their superb musicianship, SUPERBAND built a solid following which was championed by social media promoter, JEANNETTE C. PIÑA, who would become the Executive Producer for THE BRITE SIDE. Ms. Piña loved the sound of the band with its Stan Kenton influence from the beginning. The band's music is lush and melodic, and very approachable. It does not try to be avant-garde; rather, it has a danceable, crowd-pleasing appeal. By the time the project got underway, Harris was in failing health. Ms. Piña had admired his work and wanted to make the album his legacy, so she enlisted the help of Noday and veteran trombonist MICHAEL BALOGH, the lead trombonist with SUPERBAND, to realize the project. Balogh, who has a long list of recording, television and theater credits, and who has performed with a 'Who's Who' of renowned musical artists in the Jazz, Pop, Rock, R&B, and Latin worlds, became the conductor and musical director of the band. Unfortunately, Harris passed away just months before the project was completed, so he never heard the final product. Balogh and Ms. Piña wanted to keep the band going, but since some of the original musicians had moved on to other projects, they decided to rebrand and named the band Horizons Jazz Orchestra to make this debut album as a tribute to Lee Harris. Balogh asked three of his old friends to record with the newly rebranded band as guest artists. CARL SAUNDERS is a trumpet virtuoso who grew up in Las Vegas, playing mellophone and then trumpet with The Stan Kenton Orchestra. He played the lead trumpet and jazz chairs in many showrooms in Las Vegas for all the superstars. Balogh had also lived and played in Las Vegas for several years and was friends with Saunders and invited him to join the project. Saunders is featured on five of the ten tracks with his innovative solos. JONATHAN JOSEPH is a Grammy-winning drummer known for his work with Spyro Gyra, Al Jarreau, Yellowjackets, and Dave Sanborn, and has toured with Jeff Beck during the last seven years. Woodwind specialist and jazz great BILLY ROSS has been with the Woody Herman Orchestra since he was 17. He has played with everyone in the business -- from Natalie Cole and Barry Manilow to the Four Tops and the O’Jays -- as well as playing for 14 years on the Univision TV show, Sabado Gigante. He performs on four of the tracks. THE BRITE SIDE features 10 compositions, including five originals by Harris and five others that feature his arrangements of classic jazz standards. The album opens with "Red Apple Sweet," a Lee Harris original. The song is written in several distinct sections, and the title is a pun on the word "suite." It features solos by Joseph on drums, GARY MAYONE on the B3 organ, and Balogh on trombone. "Pure Imagination," by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, with an arrangement by Harris, is a waltz featuring the saxophone section and a beautiful flugelhorn solo by Saunders. "After You've Gone, Finally" is Harris' take-off on the familiar standard. Saunders and Ross take solos on this tune as do Mayone on keys, and SCOTT KLARMAN on alto sax. "The Runner," an appealing Harris original, was inspired by a drive up the California coast in the fog. "Fourth Dimension," an up-tempo swing, is also a Harris original with a noteworthy solo by Saunders. It also features solos by RANDY EMERICK on baritone sax and LUKE WILLIAMS on guitar. "The Brite Side," another Harris original, has an Americana feel, featuring solos by Ross on tenor sax and Bayone on keys. "The Sound," a song co-composed by Billy Ross and Mike Levine, is an arrangement by Harris and a tribute to Stan Getz. "Summertime" features Klarman on a brilliant soprano sax solo. "Maria" is an anomaly on this album. Written by Leonard Bernstein with an arrangement by Don Sebesky, it features a solo by Noday, who played the chart with SUPERBAND. The CD closes with "A Train Bossa," a happy arrangement featuring Ross and Saunders. With sterling musicianship, exciting arrangements, and some rarely heard compositions that could have been taken right out of the Great American Songbook, THE BRITE SIDE, through the vision and guidance of Executive Producer Jeannette Piña and Producer Michael Balogh, is a loving tribute to Lee Harris, an unheralded but much appreciated composer and arranger in the jazz world. # # # HORIZONS JAZZ ORCHESTRA PLAYS THE MUSIC OF LEE HARRIS, THE BRITE SIDE, is available online everywhere. 14. Fairground Records LLC Sabertooth Swing "Songs of Future Past" Impacting: September 8 2020 Format(s): Americana, Jazz Born and bred in New Orleans, Sabertooth Swing carries a rich musical tradition of swing jazz and americana with old roots and exciting new ramifications. Tracing its origins within the local swing dance community, their music embraces a foot-taping energy supported by serious musicianship and varied influences. Sabertooth Swing excels at bringing a fun experience and enhancing it with musical overtones that enrich their sound with beautiful jazz idioms that can be either be a source of exciting dancing or serious listening. The group is composed of musicians of various origin and musical background, with influences stretching from French chansons, folk & bluegrass, new wave and reggae with, of course, much love and respect for New Orleans’ own musical heritage. The seeds for Songs of Future Past were planted after a show a couple of years back, when Sabertooth Swing found themselves playing a dance in a New Orleans juke joint. It was a late, sweaty night of dancing. The band had paired up with a noted local blues act, and for the occasion, had prepared a setlist of tunes with slower tempos. These tunes had a decidedly bluer characteristic, with a distinct air of melancholy and wanderlust. After this event, an album of this material felt inevitable. Additionally, the band wanted to explore the possibilities for reimagining new songs with a classic touch. Songs of Future Past is available worldwide from Slammin Media and distributed worldwide by Believe Distribution. 18. Artist Title Time Cindy Blackman Santana We Came To Play (Featuring John McLaughlin) 05:41 Cindy Blackman Santana Everybody’s Dancin’ (Featuring Carlos Santana) 04:57 Cindy Blackman Santana "We Came To Play (Featuring John McLaughlin) & Everybody's Dancin' (Featuring Carlos Santana)" Format(s): AAA, College, Jazz, Non-Commercial, NPR - IMPACTING NOW - Out September 18, the album features Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, Kirk Hammett, Vernon Reid and Producer Narada Michael Walden. On September 18, renowned virtuoso drummer, songwriter and singer Cindy Blackman Santana will release her astonishing new solo album, Give the Drummer Some. Three years in the making, the record is a rapturous testament to Blackman Santana’s unparalleled musicianship and compositional mastery, featuring 17 tracks (both instrumentals and vocal songs) that take listeners on an exuberant, compelling and beautifully sustained journey that will leave them breathless. Working as her own producer as well as with multiple Grammy and Emmy-winning hitmaker Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey, among others), Blackman Santana welcomed a brilliant array of musicians to her sessions, including an eye-popping host of guitar titan guest stars, such as Mahavishu Orchestra legend John McLaughlin, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett. As one might expect, the drummer, who for the past decade been a mainstay in the band Santana, features the unmistakable artistry of her guitar icon husband Carlos Santana, on a generous number of cuts. “If I had any kind of agenda at all, I wanted this album to be all-encompassing,” says Blackman Santana. “Pop, funk, rock, jazz – I embrace the creativity in all of it, and I feel so inspired when I play it. That’s what I wanted people to feel when they listen to the album – inspired.” On the epic instrumental “We Came to Play,” Blackman Santana creates a gargantuan groove while engaging in a riveting musical conversation with John McLaughlin and bassist Matt Garrison; on top of which Neal Evans adds an amazing palate on organ providing warm, textured undertones. “This track kept building and building, and things got very fiery,” says Blackman Santana. The title sums up the vibe: ‘This is us, we’re playing, and if you don’t like it, go home!’” “Everybody’s Dancin’” is a hook-filled, deliciously vibey treasure that features a mega-searing guitar solo by Carlos. As Blackman Santana explains, the song came about following a remark that producer Walden made about her hair: “Narada loves my Afro – he said it was electric,” she laughs. “That really sparked the idea for the song. We wanted something that united people, something fun and universal that would be a joy for them to sing. It certainly was for me.” “It was a lot of fun to do so many vocal songs on this album,” she says. “I am, and always will be a drummer, but it’s also exciting to showcase the singer side of me. I want people to have a great time listening to it. I set out to make a record that was fun and uplifting, but more than that I wanted the messages to matter. If people come away from it feeling all that I put into it, then I’ve done my job.”

Artist Title Time Loudon Wainwright III A Ship Without a Sail 03:57 Loudon Wainwright III You Rascal You (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) 02:59 Loudon Wainwright III A Perfect Day 02:40 Loudon Wainwright III "A Ship Without A Sail" "You Rascal You (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead)" "A Perfect Day" From his new album I'd Rather Lead A Band Available October 9 Rolling Stone Feature Loudon Wainwright III's new album is a collaboration with Vince Giordano and his band The Nighthawks, and producer and music supervisor Randall Poster. The 14-song collection is a loose, fresh, and “anti-nostalgic” take on classic songs from the 1920s and ‘30s featuring Wainwright as singer and band leader. As interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Wainwright and Giordano’s big band present a perfectly paced supper club set of songs by Irving Berlin, Fats Waller, Frank Loesser and others with nimble phrasing and an approach that lets the songs lead the way, like a dance partner. For Wainwright, I’d Rather Lead A Band was also a welcome chance to take a break from playing his guitar and singing in what he calls his “somewhat misanthropic, occasionally goofy persona.” “I loved the idea of just being a vocalist,” he says. “It was freeing, because I could shed my Loudon Wainwright III-ness. I will no doubt return to my foremost incarnation, but what a pleasure it was to settle back with this marvelous band and sing these songs.” www.lw3.com
  20. NEW ALBUM FROM DIANA KRALL THIS DREAM OF YOU Available Worldwide September 25th Second Release “I Wished On The Moon” Out Now Diana Krall will release her new album, This Dream Of You, on Verve Records September 25th. The second single from the album, “I Wished On The Moon,” is out now. You can listen to the song and pre-order the album here. This Dream Of You, produced in May 2020 by Ms. Krall, was mixed by Al Schmitt, who worked closely with the artist to achieve notable intimacy and immediacy with her voice in the final balance. The performances come from sessions in 2016 and 2017, on which Krall worked with her friend and longtime creative partner, Tommy LiPuma. Mr. LiPuma passed away in 2017 at the age of 80. The album features Krall in a quartet with long-time colleagues, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Anthony Wilson on “Almost Like Being In Love” and “That’s All”, as well as a trio with Christian McBride and Russell Malone who play on “Autumn in New York” and “There’s No You.” The duos include a wonderful first-take performance of “I Wished On The Moon” from Krall and bassist, John Clayton and two vocal cuts – “More Than You Know” and “Don’t Smoke In Bed” with accompaniment by pianist, Alan Broadbent, who also provided the string orchestration for “But Beautiful” and string arrangement on “Autumn In New York.” The final session for this album took place at Capitol Studios with an ensemble featuring guitarist, Marc Ribot, the fiddle of Stuart Duncan and a rhythm section of Tony Garnier on bass and Karriem Riggins on drums. This line-up played “Just You, Just Me,” Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is The Ocean” and the Bob Dylan song, “This Dream Of You,” on which Randall Krall plays accordion. This Dream Of You is music for right now but it is also a “long playing record,” one that feels like a movie that you might share with someone because you know they’ll stay with it until the final reel. As Diana says, “If ‘But Beautiful’ is the overture, then ‘Singing In The Rain’ is the end title.” This Dream Of You But Beautiful That’s All Autumn In New York Almost Like Being In Love More Than You Know Just You, Just Me There’s No You Don’t Smoke In Bed This Dream Of You I Wished On The Moon How Deep Is The Ocean Singing In The Rain Diana Krall is the only vocalist, in the jazz category, to have nine albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, ten Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. About Diana Krall: Krall grew up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Her grandfather was a coal miner and he along with her grandmother worked in a small diner in their later years. Her mother taught library and music and her father was a chartered accountant who collected 78 rpm records and also played the piano. Her Uncle, Randall Krall is also a musician. She was surrounded by a deep love and respect for music and art. Diana grew up listening to music played on 78 records. “West End Blues”, a song composed by Louis Armstrong was a song she listened to over and over. She learned to play 78 records on a windup gramophone and discovered many artists through playing those recordings at a very young age. Diana’s first job was playing piano in a local bar in her home-town when she was 15 years old. She learned from so many great musicians who generously gave their time experience and kindness. Many musicians she had the opportunity to learn from and play with were the very artists who created the art form she honors in her playing. Diana has worked as a piano player, who also sings, all over the world. She is blessed to have a loving husband and two beautiful children. They live in New York City and Vancouver, Canada. 21. A GIFT FROM THE FIRST LADY OF SONG NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD ELLA FITZGERALD LIVE BERLIN CONCERT RECORDING FROM 1962 THE LOST BERLIN TAPES SET FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 2, 2020 ON VERVE RECORDS Verve Records announces the release of a never-before-heard stellar live recording from the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. The Lost Berlin Tapes were recorded – incredibly in both mono and stereo – at Berlin’s Sportpalast on March 25, 1962 and finds Ella at the top of her game with a trio led by pianist Paul Smith, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. The Lost Berlin Tapes will be released on Verve Records on October 2, 2020. Pre-order the album now and listen to the second single “Taking A Chance On Love” here: https://EllaFitzgerald.lnk.to/LostBerlinTapes There was just something about Berlin that brought out the best in Ella. In February of 1960, she gave a concert at the Deutschlandhalle, which became one of her best-known and best-selling records, Mack The Knife: Ella in Berlin. The album won her 2 Grammys, it went on to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Two years after that historic concert, Ella returned to the city at the height of her career, in the midst of her most extensive European tour to date. Flanked by her stalwart rhythm section including pianist Paul Smith, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks and drummer Stan Levey, Ella delivers an energized, top-of-her-game set a month before her 45th birthday. Ella Fitzgerald The Lost Berlin Tapes is a jewel in the treasure chest of impresario and Verve Records founder Norman Granz’s private collection. As Ella’s manager, he had a habit of recording Ella live – sometimes for radio broadcast, sometimes for later release, sometimes just to have. This particular recording was amazingly done in both mono and stereo – and on this March evening at Berlin’s Sportpalast, Ella delivered, singing some lesser-known gems as well as the hits. One of those hits was “Mack The Knife.” Ella famously flubbed the lyrics in the known 1960 recording, and two years later, nails them. But – she forgets the name of the town she’s in. On the recording, she charmingly says, “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so embarrassed. This is where the first time I sang Mack The Knife and when I got to the part of the town, I couldn’t think of it!” The audience is enthralled, nonetheless. That unique charm, energy and skill are palpable throughout this live recording. She opens with “Cheek To Cheek,” followed by the rarer “He’s My Kind of Boy.” After her behind-the-shoulder scat-heavy salute with “Jersey Bounce,” Ella shifts to a heart-wrenching ballad of the Great American Songbook, “Angel Eyes.” Ella also sings the Ray Charles hit “Hallelujah, I Love Him So,” singing a reprise that shows Ella’s improvisational skills. The full track listing is below. This incredible performance will be released on CD/digital and LP. 22. LEGENDARY PIANIST CHICK COREA EXPLORES THE LINEAGE OF GREAT COMPOSERS FROM MOZART TO MONK, JOBIM TO STEVIE WONDER – TO CHICK COREA – ON SPIRITED NEW 2-CD/3-LP SOLO ALBUM On Plays, Corea engages audiences with surprising pairings of his favorite influences as well as spontaneous improvisations and his own sterling compositions on an intimate, captivating live collection “Solo piano is lonely,” says Chick Corea, though the legendary pianist is in good company throughout the solo performances captured on this captivating new double album. On Plays, available now via Concord Jazz, Corea engages with several of his favorite composers, representing a wide swath of musical history – as well as with enthusiastic audiences in concert halls across Europe and the U.S., who become integral collaborators in these spirited renditions. While Corea’s solo explorations are as exploratory and inventive as ever, the tone on Plays is decidedly communal. That comes from the jazz great’s warm and witty dialogues with his audience, but also from the way he makes connections with the iconic composers whose work he celebrates. He also places these composers in conversation with one another, pairing favorite pieces in such a way that surprising commonalities are revealed that bridge styles, genres and eras from Mozart to the moment at hand. 23. Well, it's well documented that I'm losing my mind, but I can't imagine misremembering Thanksgiving!
  24. Yes, I was visiting a friend's family for Thanksgiving. Maybe you can answer a question for me. That night at the Village Gate (as I recall) Elvin Jones' trio was playing. The door was open, and they were very, very loud. The tenor sax was blaring away. We did not go in to check it out. I assumed that the sax was Joe Farrell because he was on Elvin's most recent album. Can you determine for me if it was in fact Joe Farrell? If not, who? Thanks! By the way, at the Fillmore East that night was a new group called Led Zeppelin. My friend preferred to see them, but only single seats scattered around were still available.
