Eddie LeBaron has passed away at 85. RIP. I lived in Washington when I first collected bubble gum cards in 1959. LeBaron was the Redskins' quarterback, and I got his card! After that season, he told George Preston Marshall that he was ready to go home to Texas, and that he would either retire to practice law or play for the new expansion team, the Dallas Cowboys. So Marshall traded him to Dallas. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/eddie-lebaron-the-diminutive-little-general-of-1950s-redskins-dies-at-85/2015/04/02/6be944ca-d940-11e4-ba28-f2a685dc7f89_story.html

Happy Birthday 2015 Claude! -
I have been listening to this album, and only this album, every day for the past 13 days. I'll be surprised if it's not my pick for Album of the Year in December.

According to Amazon, I got the monochrome Saint set in mid-May 2010, and the color set about a month later. Nope, you beat me by a mile. I ordered my b/w set March 25, 2013.

I forgot to mention that a couple of days after Pi Day, there was a Letter to the Editor of the Wall St. Journal which pointed out... Pi is 3.14159. If you are going to stop with four places after the decimal point, you should round off the final number, which in this case would make it 3.1416. So we'll have the Pi Day of the Century to celebrate next year too!

Dave, I have a new resolution starting Easter (this Sunday) to watch one great movie each month. I think my first will be Divorce Italian Style. By the way, my records show that I purchased the b/w Saint box for the same price as yours. I wonder if we bought ours within a few days of each other.

The most popular beer in every country
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Heineken was imported into the US by Van Munching & Co. Van Munching & Co. was mentioned at the end of every radio and TV commercial. Van Munching's contract expired in (I think) in '95. My experience was that everyone thought that Heineken was a good European beer. I never heard anything bad about Heineken until after Van Munching lost its exclusive to import and distribute it. http://www.nytimes.com/1990/04/04/obituaries/leo-van-munching-88-heineken-beer-trader.html http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1990-04-08/news/9001290347_1_heineken-beer-importer-munching -

Well, I guess we're all getting older, as the names and faces of the '60s die of old age. RIP. http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2015/04/01/john-lennon-first-wife-cynthia-lennon-dead/?intcmp=features

Jay Z to start streaming competitor to Spotify

"Theoretically" because you doubt the merits of lossless downloads, or because you doubt the merits of Taylot Swift's inclusion in the mix? -
Jay Z to start streaming competitor to Spotify
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Looks like they bought Tidal. Unlike Spotify, they stream lossless. I have been using them for 4-5 months and prefer it to Spotify. For me, their interface is much less cluttered and cleaner than what Spotify has become. Unfortunately, they charge $19.95 per month which is 2X Spotify. I am hard-wired to buy physical product , so I use both Spotify and Tidal to preview music as much as anything. I think I will pass on the editorial content ... not b/c it is Jay Z, but hey, I just want to listen. Spotify streams 320kbps for their premium subscription. I haven't heard it because I don't do streaming services, but I'd bet money you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and lossless. And to be fair, I don't know that people "prefer" lower quality MP3, I just think the price is right for them. Speaking of prices, the Wall St. Journal article linked to in post #4 says that Tidal's new price will be $9.99; apparently the same price as its competitors' but for arguably better service. -

Jay Z to start streaming competitor to Spotify
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Jay Z and his friends started promoting Tidal over the weekend. I think they are now open for business. http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/03/30/jay-zs-music-streaming-service-tidal-readies-for-relaunch/ Remember when Taylor Swift made headlines for pulling all of her music from Spotify? It looks like Tidal will pay her what she wants. http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/25/taylor-swift-streaming-tidal/ -
Thanks, crisp. I'll take a look at those three.

If I'm reading this right, it says that the most popular beer in England is Carling. Can that be right? http://vinepair.com/features/external/beer-world-map-3000-full-web.jpg

The Complete Carry On (30 movies) - 30.00 GBP http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EXOZE64/ref=pe_141401_67049071_pe_epc__1p_2_ti For years I had heard about the Carry On movies. Finally, ca. 1984, I had the opportunity to see one - Carry On Nurse. I didn't laugh once. I've loved every one of the old black and white Terry-Thomas, Peter Sellers, Wilfred Hyde-White, etc., movies I've seen. So what happened? Is it me, or were the Carry On movies for a different audience? Any thoughts?

Sounds great, Eric. I've just put in a request for it with my local library.
