Happy Birthday 2010 Matthew!

Allan Maki Week 17 picks http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/cfl-picks/article1768030/ David Naylor worked part time for TSN, the Canadian cable tv equivalent of ESPN. This week he joined TSN full time, so he won't be making picks for the Globe anymore.

Greg Maddox turned down the Yankees to sign for less money with the Braves. I'm not sure if Maddox would have signed to play for anybody other than George.

The Bombers have released Adarius Bowman, who was their leading receiver last year. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=338074

The Ticats have signed Kyries Hebert. Since his days with the Bombers, he has spent the past two years with Cincinnati. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/tiger-cats-sign-kyries-hebert/article1765229/

I have come to like a promo I've received by a Bay Area group that has travelled in the past called Anthony Brown's Asian American Orchestra. The album is called India & Africa, and is made up of Coltrane (composed or performed) songs. The group is a 16-member ensemble, featuring instruments from India and Africa to provide an interesting comparison to the Coltrane songs most here are familiar with. The album was recorded live in concert, all but one track at Yoshi's Oakland in April. The material says that it was released Sept. 28, but there is an error on the Amazon page (listing another album in its place), and it is not yet listed at CDBaby.

The Als signed Ike Charlton today. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=337973

Jake Dunlap has died. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at an exhibition game between the Als and the Rough Riders in 1979. Very personable. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=337954

Delmark has released a new jazz album recorded just this past June called Tight Like This by trumpeter Brad Goode. Goode is from Chicago, and maybe some of you there are familiar with him. In recent years he has been a college professor at the Univ. of Cincinnati and the Univ. of Colorado. Goode is backed here by a piano, bass and drums trio. The playing is very solid, but nothing out of the ordinary. Of the eleven songs, five are Goode originals. This is not-too-hard hard bop. It's good. http://www.amazon.com/Tight-Like-This-Brad-Goode/dp/B003UOM5NI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287451964&sr=1-1

I've been enjoying a promo I received called Two Sides One Story by the Mason Brothers. The sound is early sixties Blue Note. The brothers play trumpet and trombone. Chris Potter and Joe Locke make appearances. Amazon and CDBaby seem to be sold out of it. Amazon Marketsellers have used copies of it. The street date was supposed to be October 5, but maybe something is up with that. Brad Mason has a real nice smooth tone on trumpet. Elliot Mason wrote the songs and appears to be the leader of the group. I find one song particularly interesting because it is based on the changes of Giant Steps. It's called Stage Pints, which is an anagram! Anyway, I hope both of the Masons have a future, because I like 'em.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30....Toronto Argonauts 3 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W888.htm The Argos opened the scoring with a FG, but did nothing after that. Their defense kept it close for three quarters. The Ticats clinched a playoff berth, but it is very likely that the Argos will make the playoffs as well. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 31....British Columbia Lions 28 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W889.htm The Eskimos won it in overtime, and they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. I'm kind of bummed that I missed most of this game. This was a Vancouver game that started at 10:00 pm my time. I've been fighting the onset of a cold, and I suddenly got very sleepy at 9:30. I listened as long as I could, but at 10:45 I turned it off and went to bed, and slept for ten hours. Paul McCallum was supposedd to kick for the Lions, but apparently they did not submit the game roster to the league officials in a timely fashion. I had never heard of this happening before. They were required to play with last week's roster. So Sean Whyte put on a uniform after the game had started, and played. ***** Montreal Alouettes 22....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W890.htm The Bombers looked surprisingly good in the first quarter, and led 11-2, thanks in part to Colt David missing two FGs. They did nothing for the rest of the game until two minutes were left and they were trailing 22-11. They quickly went 107 yards for a TD and made the two-point convert. They then almost recovered the short kick. They held the Als, and got the ball back with 27 seconds to go. They got to the 7 yard line, where they fumbled with less than 10 seconds to go. With the win, the Als clinched first place in the East. This was the Bombers' seventh loss of the year by four points or less. ***** Calgary Stampeders 34....Saskatchewan Roughriders 26 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W891.htm The Riders led 19-10 at the half, but the Stamps came back strong in the second half. At this point it is mathematically possible but highly unlikely that the Stamps won't finish first. The Riders have already clinched second. The Riders lost both Luca Congi and Rob Bagg to injuries, both probably for the remainder of the year. Both are Canadians and will be very hard to replace.

I have his Russo/Holman Mosaic and a few others, and I like them all. His Christmas album is one of my favorites, such as it is.

Bol, I bought a CD from them a year or two ago. I don't remember the details, except that I was completely satisfied. -

This makes the Noel Prefotaine deal look like a steal for the Eskimos. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=337382 ***** Montreal, Calgary and Saskatchewan have clinched playoff spots. The winner of tonight's Toronto-Hamilton game will clinch another. http://stats.sports.theglobeandmail.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=globeandmail&page=cfl/stand/standingAJ.htm http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/feature/?id=11238 ***** Jamie Boreham hurt his hamstring in last week's game, and he is done for the season. The Argos put him on the nine-game injured list. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=337448
