  5. Hold on. Lani left while the Stillness album was half finished. I think it was 1971. She was replaced for the remainder of the album by Gracinha Leporace. Gracinha had previously been a member of a group which I believe Mendes controlled called Bossa Rio. Bossa Rio also included Manfredo Fest. I don't know when Mendes and Gracinha started dating. I believe that Karen left in 1972 because she was cast as Nurse Dish in the pilot of the MASH tv show, which started in 1972. I don't know why she was not included in the cast when the show was picked up. ***** The Carnival was a vocal quartet consisting of Janis Hansen and Jose Soares from Brasil '66, along with Terry Fischer of The Murmaids and a guy named Tommy Neal. I had their one album on World Pacific, but that was it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Carnival_(band) ***** Speaking of dating, those bossa nova guys all married each other. Brasil '65's singer was Wanda de Sa. She went on to marry Edu Lobo, a popular composer who put out one album on A&M called Sergio Mendes Presents.
  6. TTK, I believe what you say is incorrect. I saw an article about Brasil'66 on the JazzTimes website some months ago, but I can't find it now. It said that the entire Brasil '66 group was unhappy and quit, including Lani. Lani said that she was just going along with everybody else. Alpert persuaded Mendes that Hall was the star, and that he should persuade her to come back. I don't know if Alpert and Hall were already dating at that time.

  11. As I recall, in 1969 Blue Note issued six double albums to celebrate their thirty years of existence. This was just a couple of years after the company was sold. There were two double albums for each decade. I picked up the first double album of the '60s. I wish I had picked up all the others.

  13. I believe I posted this on the thread announcing Joao Donato's passing, and let me put it up here again. I think it's terrific, better than the original.
  14. Edmonton 37....Calgary 16 The Stampeders led 6-2 with 6:49 left in the second quarter when the Elks scored a touchdown. The Stamps never caught up after that. It's much too early to say if Bonner will mentally develop into a starting quarterback, but there's no doubt he has an arm. The Elks have now won five of their last six. The Stamps looked like they would not make the playoffs. https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/recap-edmonton-37-calgary-16/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/elks-take-down-stamps-to-win-second-straight-battle-of-alberta/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/surging-edmonton-elks-top-calgary-stampeders-to-escape-west-basement-1.2170705 https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/mcleod-bethel-thompson-pulled-in-fourth-quarter-due-to-minor-injury-scare-edmonton-elks-1.2170742 https://3downnation.com/2024/09/07/edmonton-elks-to-start-canadian-qb-tre-ford-after-bye-week-interim-head-coach-jarious-jackson/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/3-stats-that-defined-edmontons-week-14-win-over-calgary/ ***** With the conclusion of Week 14, we are now two-thirds of the way through the regular season. So let's take a look at the schedule and the standings. https://www.cfl.ca/schedule/2024/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024standings It says here that the Riders haven't won since July 19. The Stampeders last won August 4, and didn't look very good Saturday. And despite their beating the Argos on Labor Day, the Ticats are last in the league and three games out of third place. So today, I am picking those three to miss the playoffs. None of these three are terrible, so things could change between now and Halloween. ***** I think one reason a good ballgame is so satisfying is that they're not all good, and you don't know ahead of time which ones will be bad. The league has been on a remarkable streak of exciting games, but that ended this weekend. Next week has only three games scheduled, and all three could be blowouts. They'll be stopping the presses if Toronto, Hamilton or Calgary wins.
  15. BC 37....Montreal 23 The Lions led from start to finish. The Als' offense looked OK, but never got into high gear, which tells us something about BC's defense. I guess we can now say that Rourke is back. https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/06/recap-bc-37-montreal-23/ gttps://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/06/lions-secure-road-win-against-east-leading-alouettes/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/william-stanback-steps-up-against-former-team-as-bc-lions-beat-montreal-alouettes-1.2170365 https://3downnation.com/2024/09/07/william-stanback-gets-his-pound-of-flesh-powers-b-c-lions-past-top-ranked-alouettes-10-other-thoughts/ https://3downnation.com/2024/09/07/alouettes-lose-heavyweight-battle-to-b-c-lions-six-other-thoughts/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/06/3-stats-that-defined-bcs-week-14-win-over-montreal/ ***** Ottawa 41....Toronto 27 Ottawa led 31-3 at the half. I guess the Redblacks are for real. https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/recap-ottawa-41-toronto-27/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/redblacks-earn-statement-win-over-argonauts/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/damon-webb-returns-two-interceptions-for-touchdowns-ottawa-redblacks-thump-toronto-argonauts-1.2170562 https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/3-stats-that-defined-ottawas-week-14-win-over-toronto/ ***** Winnipeg 26....Sask 21 Good game. The Riders had their chances throughout the game, but the Bombers are the better team, and have now won their last five. https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/recap-winnipeg-26-saskatchewan-21/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/bombers-get-best-of-riders-again-in-labour-day-rematch/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/winnipeg-blue-bombers-down-saskatchewan-roughriders-in-banjo-bowl-1.2170632 https://3downnation.com/2024/09/07/winnipeg-blue-bombers-win-banjo-bowl-lose-chris-streveler-13-other-thoughts/ https://www.cfl.ca/2024/09/07/3-stats-that-defined-winnipegs-week-14-win-over-saskatchewan/
  16. RIP Sergio Mendes! This has stunned me much more than the passings of others noted here. I remember seeing Brasil '66 on TV for the first time. It was the summer of '66, on the Tonight Show, and they sang Mas Que Nada. My favorite song when I was in high school was Constant Rain, which was from their second album, Equinox, which at that time was one of my favorite albums.
  17. RIP Dan Morgenstern! My earliest memory of him was that when I started to get into jazz in the latter half of the '60s, the liner notes he wrote for Prestige were both the best written and also the most informative of those of the albums I picked up.

Ottawa over Toronto (I feel that the Argos with Kelly are the stronger team, but - and it's a mystery to me why - the Redblacks are undefeated at home.) Winnipeg over Sask (The Banjo Bowl! Collaros appears to have recovered from that helmet-to-helmet hit last week. Riders are on a 0-6-1 streak, but have looked good while losing.) Edmonton over Calgary (I've liked the Elks all year. MBT will start against Logan Bonner. Who knows? Bonner may surprise, but that's not the way to bet.)
