Quentin E. Baxter & Charlton Singleton Mark Nearly 30 Years Making Music Together with Joint Albums "Art Moves Jazz" & "Crossroads," Set for Release August 12 By Baxter Music Enterprises Drummer & Trumpeter of Acclaimed Jazz/Roots Music Ensemble Ranky Tanky Turn Back to the Jazz That Ignited Their Collaborations, Each Articulating His Own Vision as Well as Supporting the Other's July 13, 2022 Friends, bandmates, and fellow members of the Gullah cultural community Quentin E. Baxter and Charlton Singleton enrich their relationship yet further with the tandem August 12 release of their albums—Baxter’s Art Moves Jazz and Singleton’s Crossroads—on Baxter’s own BME/Baxter Music Enterprises. Two-fifths of the Grammy-winning Gullah music ensemble Ranky Tanky, drummer Baxter and trumpeter Singleton each also plays a prominent supporting role on the other’s record, with Baxter as the producer of both. Friends for nearly 30 years, Baxter and Singleton’s musical collaboration began on the jazz scene in their native Charleston, South Carolina (first as a duo, then in the popular local quartet Gradual Lean). They also found common ground in South Carolina’s Gullah culture, in which they both have roots. While that was the direction in which they ultimately found success in Ranky Tanky, they never lost touch with the jazz spark that had brought them together. “His playing reminded me of church,” Singleton (music and choir director of Charleston’s St. Patrick Catholic Church) says admiringly of the drummer. The admiration is mutual: “Musically, Charlton is just so dependable,” Baxter says. The albums make clear their exceptional abilities (separately and together). On Art Moves Jazz— Baxter’s leadership debut—the drummer extends his exploration of traditional Gullah music, stamping perceptively played jazz standards like Jimmy Heath’s “For Minors Only” and Thelonious Monk’s “In Walked Bud” with its rhythms. Singleton’s Crossroads (his fifth album) skews more toward bebop-based jazz, even as it comprises eight shrewd original compositions ranging from the propulsive swinger “On the Avenue” to the nostalgic ballad “Nett and Root.” In each case, however, the leader finds a sympathetic partner in his associate. Whether it’s Baxter underlining Singleton’s music with his surefooted rhythm, or Singleton seasoning Baxter’s folk-dance milieu with his pungent tone, both draw deeply from the same cultural wellsprings of jazz, gospel, and Gullah traditions, extensions of the Black heritage of the American South. Or, as Baxter more concisely puts it, “That stuff we played was swinging!” Charlton Singleton (below) was born January 7, 1971. Quentin E. Baxter (above) was born April 28, 1971. Both were born in Charleston, South Carolina; both showed an early aptitude for music; and both had profound family connections to the region’s Gullah community—an African American enclave that forged a distinctive culture out of their African traditions and shared experience in slavery. Despite these coincidences, however, trumpeter Singleton and drummer Baxter didn’t know each other until the mid-1990s, when they (along with bassist Kevin Hamilton, another longtime friend and colleague) met at the Charleston record store where Singleton worked. Later that evening, he and Baxter got to know each other and were astounded by all they had in common. “Within two hours,” Singleton recalls, “we determined that we were brothers.” Soon they were also roommates, not to mention collaborators. Baxter and Singleton—along with Hamilton and guitarist Clay Ross—formed the jazz quartet Gradual Lean, which quickly came to be regarded as a linchpin of the Charleston jazz scene. However, Gradual Lean dissolved around the turn of the 21st century when its members turned to other pursuits. Baxter toured with such luminaries as René Marie, Monty Alexander, and Freddy Cole, also honing his chops as a producer; Singleton became an educator and continued developing the local jazz scene as the founder and director of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. In 2016, however, the duo, along with the other two members of Gradual Lean and vocalist Quiana Parler, reinvented themselves as Ranky Tanky, a jazz- and soul-infused combo whose assay was the Gullah musical tradition that Baxter, Hamilton, and Singleton had known from birth. They garnered considerable acclaim (and the number 1 spot on the Billboard jazz chart) with their self-titled 2017 album. Then they outdid themselves with the 2019 follow-up, Good Time, winning a Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music album. All throughout, both men have cultivated accomplished solo careers. As he became a beacon of Charleston jazz, Singleton also recorded four albums under his own name. While he didn’t lead a record himself, Baxter co-led and produced three with poet and electronic musician Marcus Amaker. Their work together on Baxter’s Art Moves Jazz and Singleton’s Crossroads reveals significant new depths in each individual, and in the creative relationship they’ve fostered over three decades. Tenor Saxophonist Walt Weiskopf Reconvenes His Celebrated European Quartet On "Diamonds and Other Jewels," Arriving August 19 On AMM Records Recording Features Seven New Weiskopf Compositions, One Standard Performed by His Denmark-Based Working Unit After a Pandemic-Imposed Hiatus June 29, 2022 Waylaid by the COVID-19 pandemic, tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and his European Quartet return with a vengeance on Diamonds and Other Jewels, set for an August 19 release on AMM Records. A collection of Weiskopf originals (and one standard), it demonstrates the powerful chemistry Weiskopf shares with pianist Carl Winther, bassist Andreas Lang, and drummer Anders Mogensen—matched by their audible relish at being back together. The album is the sixth release by the acclaimed quartet, assembled by Weiskopf in winter 2017 for a quick European tour but quickly becoming his regular working band (when not on the road with Steely Dan, Weiskopf’s other steady gig). The winter European tour became an annual tradition—although 2020’s was their last in-person summit for two years. (Their 2021 release, Introspection 2.0, was recorded remotely, with Weiskopf across the Atlantic from his bandmates.) When opportunity finally presented itself again in January 2022, they were more than ready to take it. “Playing together again was joyful, creative, productive; and what a relief to feel a semblance of wholeness at last,” writes Weiskopf in the liner notes. “After our first few concerts, I was excited and inspired to write some new material during a train trip from Belgium to Germany. I realized we now had enough music to make a recording worthwhile in earnest.” The title Diamonds and Other Jewels is a direct reference to actual song titles, including the scintillating waltz “Black Diamond”; the pensive but emotionally charged “Blood Diamond”; and the autumnal ballad “Other Jewels.” But it could easily describe the overall quality of the album’s eight tunes. Among the sparkling treasures are tributes to two of Weiskopf’s mentors: “Thad Nation,” a brightly colored celebration of composer, arranger, and (co-)bandleader Thad Jones, and the Arthur Johnston-Sam Coslow classic “My Old Flame,” dedicated to the late great alto saxophonist Andy Fusco. These tunes are tight, most of them around six minutes. That’s a sterling testimony to how tight the band itself remains, both in terms of their personal bonds and their musical discipline. In those short timeframes, these musicians say a tremendous amount. (Photo above, l. to r.: Andreas Lang, Carl Winther, Walt Weiskopf, Anders Mogensen.) Walt Weiskopf was born July 30, 1959, in Augusta, Georgia to a father whose work as a medical doctor was offset by his pursuit of classical piano. Both his sons—Walt and pianist Joel—followed in his formally trained footsteps. By the time he graduated from Eastman School of Music in 1980, however, Weiskopf was firmly in the jazz camp. He kickstarted his career in Buddy Rich’s big band, moving on a few years later to the Toshiko Akiyoshi orchestra, then beginning to build a solo reputation. His first two albums as a leader, 1989’s Exact Science and 1990’s Mindwalking, both put him at the helm of a quartet with his brother Joel, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. From there, Weiskopf was leader and performed with a variety of different ensembles, recording 11 albums over a 15-year span from 1992 to 2007 while maintaining a healthy freelance calendar in the commercial world of the New York studio scene, Broadway show pit orchestras, as well as the Akiyoshi band, Frank Sinatra orchestra, and his notable peers including, among others, Renee Rosnes, Conrad Herwig, Jim Snidero, John Fedchock, and Billy Drummond. He got the call to join Steely Dan in 2003 and has been with the jazz-rock ensemble ever since. Weiskopf assembled his European Quartet in 2017, sprinting across Scandinavia and northern Germany for just a week—but gaining enough steam for the saxophonist to document them on a self-titled album. But one recording couldn’t contain the band’s creative energy: European Quartet was followed by 2019’s Worldwide, 2020’s Introspection, and 2021’s Introspection 2.0, as well as the holiday EP A Little Christmas Music before laying down Diamonds and Other Jewels in January 2022. Walt sums it up: “This is what I’ve always wanted to do—to work with like-minded musicians, to write music, share it, and perform all over the world. This is my professional dream come true.” Photography: Anna Yatskevich Walt Weiskopf European Quartet - EPK Walt Weiskopf Web Site

Formats: Jazz, Non-Commercial, NPR "Trio?" - The Story: On November 12, 1967 the Dave Brubeck Quartet was nearing the end of their last tour of Europe. They had played in Hamburg on November 10th but saxophonist Paul Desmond got “distracted” after going out for a night on the town to explore Hamburg with an old friend. When the rest of the quartet went to the airport in the morning, Paul was missing. He didn’t make the lobby call or the flight and the rest of the group traveled to Vienna without him. "Dave said that the best concerts by the Classic Quartet took place when he was angry. On this occasion Dave was mad because Paul was unacceptably missing. This unplanned trio turned in a performance charged with energy, dynamics and confident shifts of style and feel. The spontaneous arrangements featured extended and unusual solos by the piano bass and drums. This is a rare, revealing and wonderfully accidental addition to the Brubeck legacy". *Darius Brubeck Dave Brubeck: Piano Joe Morello Drums Eugene Wright: Bass __________Album Tracks__________ St. Louis Blues 8:54 One Moment Worth Years 10:10 Swanee River 7:37 La Paloma Azul 6:09 Someday My Prince Will Come 5:28 Take The A Train 4:16 __________Radio Edits__________ St. Louis Blues (Time Edit) 6:59 One Moment Worth Years (Time Edit) 6:59 Swanee River (Time Edit) 5:35 Website: BrubeckEditions.com Interviews/Inquiries: Derry@BrubeckMusic.com

Eva Kess Charts An Expansive New Course On "Inter-Musical Love Letter," Due July 22 from Unit Records Composer-Bandleader Presents Music That Experiments with Contemporary Jazz, Classical Music, The Avant-Garde, and Hip-Hop Performed by a Unique 14-Piece Ensemble June 16, 2022 Bassist and composer Eva Kess doubles down on her already formidable artistic development with Inter-Musical Love Letter, slated for a July 22 release on Unit Records. That “doubling down” is a literal one: Whereas 2020’s Sternschnuppen: Falling Stars (the Swiss musician’s trailblazing previous album) featured music for a seven-piece band, Kess now builds out the ensemble to 14 pieces, again including the instrumentation of a traditional string quartet. If Kess’s tool kit has doubled in size, however, her musical lens has widened considerably more. In addition to strings and rhythm section, the new album’s ensemble includes five horns, vibraphone, guitar, and vocals. Where Sternschnuppen suggested new perspectives on the fusion of jazz with chamber classical, Inter-Musical Love Letter’s range includes orchestral music, big-band jazz, art song, the standard repertoire, and hip-hop—the last represented in a remarkable French-language rap by guitarist Cyprien Rochat on the opening “Peculiar Times.” “I wanted…to create a magical sound with instruments that blend really well,” Kess says. “I really tried to use the whole spectrum of sound possibilities, both within one instrument, showing the whole range and possibilities of sound, as well as in the sonic possibilities for the orchestrations. Every piece is different.” Unquestionably so. Where “Peculiar Times” is suitably funky and percussive for a hip-hop setting, “Wondering What Is Coming” is gauzy and ethereal, swaying as if caught in an updraft. “Magic Mama” is somehow both delicate and firmly grounded, Jonathan Salvi’s vibes and Felix Wolf’s drums acting as a bedrock for gradual sonic layering (and a spoken-word recitation from vocalist Mirjam Hässig). “Inbetween Worlds” flirts with the avant-garde in its opening string counterpoint, then features a fleet solo by Salvi and a stout-toned one by bassist Loïc Baillod. (As an instrumentalist, Kess sits out this recording, busying herself instead with directing the band through her compositions.) The sole nonoriginal here is the Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke standard “But Beautiful.” “I simply love this song,” Kess says. “It’s such a wonderful composition, the melody and also the lyrics. . . . I tried to make my own version. The chorus is a bit inspired by Brazilian music.” The album’s longest track, “Intuitive Love,” is also its most beatific. Strings and Hässig’s vocals converge and diverge, a graceful dance that soars into the air when Marco Karrer’s soprano sax joins the party with Domenic Landolf on tenor sax. As with so much recent music and art, Inter-Musical Love Letter is a product of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to perform (with her own band or any other) during the worldwide lockdowns, Kess turned to the one outlet that quarantine couldn’t touch. “I had this thought that I’m luckily a composer, because everything else was gone,” she says. “With all this time, this is the perfect moment to create music for a large ensemble.” Eva Kess was born Eva Patricia Kesselring on April 10, 1985, in West Berlin and grew up in Bern, Switzerland (after spending a few years in Porto Alegre, Brazil). As a child she played piano, advancing enough that as a young teenager she was able to perform a Bach concerto with a symphony orchestra. At 17, however, her world shifted radically. First, she fell in love with the double bass after hearing a street performance by a bass quartet; soon afterward, a friend took her to her first jazz concert, where she fell in love once again. Taking lessons with bassist Lorenz Beyeler—the bassist she had heard at that first jazz show—and later with fellow Bern bassist Thomas Dürst, Kess made the rounds of the local jazz scene, acquainting herself with both Bern’s musicians and the American and European artists who passed through the Swiss capital. She was soon able to form her own trio of bass, guitar, and trumpet. After studying at the Music Academy of Basel, she returned to her hometown where she entered the University of the Arts Bern’s prestigious master’s program in music composition and theory. Among her teachers were pianist/composers Django Bates and Guillermo Klein, both of whom became her mentors. In 2010, Kess won a scholarship to study in New York, adding the U.S. to Germany, Brazil, and Switzerland in her array of musical and cultural experiences. That same year (back in Switzerland) she also recorded her debut album, Wondering What Is Coming. After seven years came her long-awaited second recording, Flying Curly, followed by 2019’s unaccompanied album Bassexperiment, 2020’s Sternschnuppen: Falling Stars, and, now, Inter-Musical Love Letter.
