Dana, I don't know if I made the situation clear at the beginning of the season. So here we go. Fans outside of Canada have an easier time of watching CFL games than fans inside Canada. Inside Canada, you must subscribe to cable tv, and then subscribe to TSN specifically. In the US, half the games are available for free on the league's website. The other half is carried by CBS Sports Network, which I believe can be streamed by Americans via Hulu. Everyone outside of Canada and the US can watch all the games for free on the league's website. Benjamin Boone Adds New Layers to His Experiments With Poetry and Jazz on "Caught in the Rhythm," Set for September 15 Release on Origin Records Saxophonist-Composer Collaborates with Six Accomplished Poets & 19 Top-Tier Jazz Improvisers, Rejuvenating the Marriage of Two Highly Individual Art Forms August 7, 2023 Benjamin Boone’s large-scale project fusing jazz with contemporary poetry reaches its deepest, richest point yet on Caught in the Rhythm, to be released September 15 on Origin Records. The fourth album in the saxophonist-composer’s series matches his remarkable assemblage of revered poets—including Edward Hirsch, Tyehimba Jess, and Patrick Sylvain—with an equally remarkable group of jazz improvisers that include Ambrose Akinmusire, Greg Osby, Kenny Werner, and Ben Monder. Boone’s fascination and ingenuity with poetry and jazz are well established. The two-volume Poetry in Jazz (released in 2018–19) teamed him with the late U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize recipient Philip Levine; the first volume was voted #3 Best Album of 2018 in the DownBeat Readers’ Poll. Boone upped the ante with 2020’s The Poets Are Gathering, which featured creative partnerships with eleven major poets. If Caught in the Rhythm pares that panoply down to six, it offsets that change by gathering twenty (including Boone) of the finest musicians in the jazz idiom. “They all have something valuable to say, things that enhance our understanding, enabling us to live fuller, more aware lives,” the saxophonist says of his many collaborators on the album. “With each of these now four jazz and poetry albums, I’ve learned more and more about the melding of poetry with music, and this album in many ways is the best so far.”” It is certainly a great artistic bounty—a beautiful example of the magic that can happen when the right wordsmith finds the right musicians. T.R. Hummer’s authoritative words and voice find ideal companions in Boone’s alto and the twin guitars of Monder and Eyal Maoz on “Mississippi 1955 Confessional”; pianist Kenny Werner and saxophonist Greg Osby underline MacArthur Fellow Edward Hirsch as he conflates the expressions of jazz and poetry on “Art Pepper”; and Werner, violinist Stefan Poetzsch, bassist Corcoran Holt, and drummer Ari Hoenig construct a stark, haunting backdrop for Tyehimba Jess’s “Mercy." T.R. Hummer Faylita Hicks Kimiko Hahn Caught in the Rhythm also gives voice, both literal and figurative, to the young Afro-Latinx poet Faylita Hicks—who is also a singer and performer, and it shows. Her delivery veers between the fitting and the ironic; she recites “Hoodwitches [Redux]” with the cadences of a sermonizing preacher, while on “ASMR Sleepcast: The Night After Being Released from the Rural County Jail” she assumes the mantle of the sleek, sultry nightclub singer. Boone groups her with a stellar cast of similarly young musicians, among them the rhythm section of keyboardist Kevin Person Jr., bassist Philip Sarkisian, and drummer McKenna Reeve. “They’re all just in their twenties,” Boone notes, “so they bring fresh ideas informed by hip-hop and other genres.” But if these collaborations yield wide-ranging work with endless interpretations, they also serve a singular and personal purpose for Boone. The saxophonist is afflicted with a hearing difficulty that compelled him to do extensive research during his doctoral studies on the melodies embedded in spoken English. “Now when I hear people speak, I hear it as music,” he explains, “and that profoundly informed how I approached this project.” Caught in the Rhythm comes closer to capturing that concept than ever before. Patrick Sylvain Tyehimba Jess Edward Hirsch Born in the small textile town of Statesville, North Carolina, Benjamin Boone earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in jazz (B.M.), theory (B.M.), and music composition (M.M. and D.M.A.). In New York he performed widely and served as a music business manager. Since 2000, Boone has taught music theory and composition at California State University in Fresno and served as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Accra, Ghana (2017–18), in the Eastern European nation of Moldova (2005), and in Limerick, Ireland (2022–23). His compositions have garnered multiple national and international awards and honors, have been performed in 38 countries and on 30 albums, and have been the subject of three feature stories on National Public Radio. Caught in the Rhythm is the fourth in a series of Boone’s explorations of improvised music and spoken language, long an area of both scholarly and artistic interest for the saxophonist. Madd for Tadd Marks Its Second Celebration of Tadd Dameron With "Central Avenue Swing & Our Delight," Set for August 25 Release by Tighten Up Records 15-Piece Big Band Led by Saxophonist Kent Engelhardt, Trumpeter Stephen Enos Continues Its Series of Investigations of Dameron's Repertoire, As Newly Arranged by Engelhardt August 1, 2023 Kent Engelhardt doubles down—literally—on his pursuit of big-band arrangements of the works of Tadd Dameron with Madd for Tadd’s August 25 release of Central Avenue Swing & Our Delight (Tighten Up). The two-disc set (a follow-up to their 2018 debut The Magic Continues) finds MFT, Ohio-based alto saxophonist Engelhardt’s 15-piece Dameron big band—co-led and conducted by trumpeter Stephen Enos—performing 21 new orchestrations of the totemic composer’s tunes as well as a new original composition by Engelhardt. As the title suggests, Central Avenue Swing & Our Delight is really two separate albums in one. Central Avenue Swing features music that Dameron wrote in 1940 for the Kansas City bandleader Harlan Leonard and His Rockets, as well as his 1949 composition “Heaven’s Doors Are Open Wide” and Engelhardt’s title track. Our Delight, meanwhile, comprises songs that became showpieces for some of the bebop era’s greatest soloists. The package features incisive annotation by 2024 NEA Jazz Master Willard Jenkins. For Engelhardt, who serves as Professor and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Youngstown State University, Dameron’s music held a natural attraction. “He had a profound gift of melody, like George Gershwin and Duke Ellington,” Engelhardt says. “He created melodies that instantly stuck, and his harmonic inventions brought colors to the music that just hadn’t been heard before, foreshadowing what was to come.” Yet Dameron (1917-1965) did most of his work for the small combos that were bebop’s staple; though he personally preferred writing for large ensembles, he was rarely able to realize those ambitions during his lifetime. “The challenge was carrying over Dameron’s concept to a large ensemble setting without losing the integrity and spirit of the small groups, and the improvisational component,” says Enos, who is also the founder of the Tri-C Jazz Studies Program at Cuyahoga Community College. “The key was to try and hear what Tadd was hearing at the piano and basing everything on that. The more time we spent with this music, the more we appreciated what a genius he was.” Of course, Engelhardt and Enos are no slouches themselves. They breathe new life into prewar swingers like “Dig It” (with its buoyant call-and-response between vocalist Erin Keckan and the band) and “Take ’Um” (with Dave Kana’s marathon tenor sax solo) and reaffirm the charge of bebop classics “Lady Bird,” highlighted by an Engelhardt alto solo, and “Mating Call,” whose Latin rhythms are accented by beautiful brass and reed exchanges. It’s enough wonderful music to drive anyone Madd for Tadd. Kent Engelhardt and Stephen Enos on Central Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. Kent Engelhardt was born May 20, 1963, in Youngstown, Ohio to parents that loved music and spread that love to their son. He began taking piano lessons at the age of six, switched to saxophone in middle school, and studied jazz with campus legend Tony Leonardi at Youngstown State University. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Engelhardt went on the road with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (under the leadership of Buddy Morrow) before returning to YSU to teach and earn a master’s degree. He earned another master’s as well as a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh (with Dr. Nathan Davis), while continuing to teach at his alma mater, where he remains to this day. Drawn to Tadd Dameron’s music since his undergrad days, Engelhardt directed his research professorship at YSU toward the project of transcribing, notating, and editing Dameron’s compositions for big band (as recorded on his final album, 1962’s The Magic Touch). That accomplished, Engelhardt put together an ensemble that would allow him to hear the music he’d written. Thus was born, with the help of his friend and colleague Stephen Enos, the 15-piece Madd for Tadd ensemble, drawing together musicians from around the country to vivify Engelhardt’s interpretations of Dameron’s work. (Photo at left: Stephen Enos, Kent Engelhardt) Madd for Tadd showcased Engelhardt’s arrangements as part of a celebration of Dameron’s centennial at the 2017 Tri-C Jazz Festival in Cleveland; following that performance, the band recorded the tunes for their first album, 2018’s The Magic Continues. Rather than sating Engelhardt’s appetite for Dameron, however, these accomplishments only increased his hunger to explore the great composer’s music. Central Avenue Swing & Our Delight forms the next link in a chain that, says Engelhardt, is not yet complete. Photography: Susan Bestul (Cleveland, OH) EPK: Madd for Tadd Madd for Tadd Web Site

My recollection is that the story that I read said that someone had tampered with his rear axle. Wikipedia does not get into the specifics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Belvin
