Hi, A friend saw a movie produced and directed by Will Cowan for Universal Pictures in which Charlie Parker plays in the Lionel Hampton's Band. Did someone has further information about this association? Thanks for your help!

I would have well bought this CD but it is not paid off by the Social Security. I joke, because I like Andy Bey, especially when he is backed by Barney Wilen and Kenny Dorham.

Dear Jeff, You will find on the GEMM site many copies of "A touch of the blues" from various sellers. Good luck! Claude

I don't know exactly what is missing, but probably breakdowns, false starts or complete takes... I send you some details I have: Note received from the man who has the complete session: Additional complete takes and breakdowns appear on Blu-Disc T 1013 which claims to be the complete session, however, a tape in the author’s possession contains additional material. From Devil's Music notes: We are fortunate to have about 110 minutes in total from the two Cole Porter sessions, of which we have used about 79 minutes. Those who own a copy of the Blu-Disc LP should keep the record since it contains some breakdown takes which are not on our Volume 4. We decided to eliminate them because we felt these tracks were too similar to the ones we did use.

Hi Brownie, Volume 4 is also available since 2003 (Devil's Music DM-6004). This CD contains both April 10, 1940 & April 15, 1940 sessions which are unfortunately incomplete. I was in contact with a collector who has both April 10, 1940 & April 15, 1940 sessions in their complete form. I asked him the missing stuff (about 30 minutes) not issued on Devil's Music CD, but he refused, saying to me that he gave his word not to diffuse this music (preferring to keep his material as a child his teddy bear). Poor little man! Ted Ono is working on the volume 5, but he has some problem to find a good original copy of "Down to steamboat Tennessee" and "Sugar" from the July 10 or 11, 1940 session. He wrote me the following: I am having a great deal of difficulties finding an acceptable copy of her 12" Commodore 78 "Sugar" and "Steamboat Down Tennessee." I've gone through nine copies but they are all "not so good."

The double CD Savoy 92905-2 “The Birth Of Hard Bop” does not mention Get Happy but only A-1 composed by Hank Mobley for both takes of which one previously unissued. Maybe original producer Ozzie Cadena could make all light on this title… Ozzie CADENA P.O. Box 655 Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 U.S.A

He also accompanied Jeanne Moreau on many titles.

Hello Brownie, Right with you about the François Tusques-Le Nouveau Jazz. Really very great!

Does someone on this board knows if the title Blue Fantasy exists or not. This title is a part of the Frank Socolow session for the Duke label, recorded in New York City on May 2, 1945, with Freddie Webster (tp), Frank Socolow (ts), Bud Powell (p), Leonard Gaskin (b), Irv Kluger (dm). Only 3 titles are issued on Xanadu, Classics, Fresh Sound Records & Proper: The man I love (issued on Duke 112 (78rpm) Reverse the charges (issued on Duke 112 (78rpm) September in the rain (issued on Duke 115 (78rpm) Duke 115 contains only September in the rain, the other side is blank! A source indicates that maybe Blue Fantasy exists as test pressing, but this tune can’t be traced and may be assumed lost. Any new information will be welcomed. Thanks! Claude

Hi, They didn't mention the cheaper version, but above all they forgot to mention that the Japanese CD contains only the first session issued on disc 1 of the Lone Hill Jazz 2CD set. As a general rule, the Art Pepper sessions issued on the Jazzbank label are of rather inferior quality by comparison with the tapes I possess. Well done! You made the right choice!
