  1. They are all in the playoffs, but what is at stake is winning the division and home field "advantage," which will be a real advantage in the future but not so much this year. Division winners Yankees Tigers Athletics Wild card Orioles Rangers UNLESS Orioles win tonight v Tampa and Yankees lose to Red Sox, which would tie them with NY. Not sure but I believe they would actually play a one game playoff to decide which one is division champ and which one is wild card. I might be wrong about that. Bottom line: It's not so much your argument but your sentiment I agree with, that Selig is an idiot. Yanks are winning big now and O's losing by 4, so Yanks are division winners and O's wild card. O's and Rangers play one game to see who advances to the next round against the A's, other series is Yanks-Tigers. If the Yanks and O's had finished tied, there would have been a 163rd game to decide the division winner. Because of the advantage of winning the division they would have had to play a 163rd game to decide it, as the wild card winner plays one game and it's in or out. Either O's fans or Ranger fans will be heartbroken.
  2. Ding. I think we have a winner. Actually you might be right in terms of the amount of construction and invention in his longer solos. The Vanguard stuff (the LP selection of tracks, I mean) is a benchmark. A lot of his records don't really show what he can do though. That's the conundrum of Sonny Rollins- his recordings, for the most part, don't do him justice. When I was listening to jazz as a 17 year old in 1972, I had the good fortune to see him a number of times at the Village Vanguard and I was utterly blown away by how he could play a long solo that was packed with ideas and could suddenly shift into something else.Of course in the middle of one of these amazing solos he'd quote a standard or a hoary pop tune. It was genius at work.
  3. 1(a Sting disc) to zip
  4. Don't forget Sonny Rollins!
  5. I'm a Yankee fan, but this year's Orioles might just be one of those teams of destiny. Much as I hate to say it, they're enjoyable to watch as they keep playing hard and keep on coming. Me too, I'm thinking it will be one game to decide the AL East in game #163, loser to the wild card.Showalter's teams tend to do well in year three of his managing. If they buy tickets...
  6. True, but the SCAB refs are blowing a lot more calls and in a more spectacular fashion. The SCAB refs are also unable to get a handle on the game, and some games have veered too close to anarchy. The SCAB refs have also turned a blind eye to a large number of infractions, such as the greatly increased holding and pass interference(my opinion). The real refs are certainly quite fallible, but they're a damn sight better than a bunch of SCABS.
  7. Melky Mesa!!! He made his MLB debut yesterday as a pnich runner in the 14th inning yesterday, and on a hit he missed third. He at least had the presence of mind to backtrack and touch third, next guy gets a hit and the Yanks score and win anyway. Will Baltimore ever lose another extra inning game this season? They're up to(IIRC) 17 in a row.
  8. And here I thought I was gonna see them take papers, feed them into a machine...
  9. Now THAT is changing speeds!
  10. Folks, Jeffcrom's got a winner here! I listened to this new disc last night and liked it a lot, and tonight I'm listening again and it's even better. Jeffcrom's offering it for a nice price, so a word to the wise...
  11. Ha! They're nothing compared to Yuni Beatencourt. Apparently, you guys have never heard of Jeff Francouer. These guys think plate discipline only applies to all you can eat buffets!
  12. I just saw Porter do a talk on Don Byas at the Detroit festival, and the guy who introduced him said the book was coming out next year. That's been quite a wait... ... IIRC, Porter had a pretty serious stroke, so maybe everything got a bit sidetracked. ...
  13. That was great, thanks for the laugh!!!
  14. 'Bedroom Bliss with Beethoven', 'Shacking Up with Chopin'
  15. Yup. Can't remember the radio station call letters. Was it LIB or LIR? I think one of those broke U2 to New Yawkas. LIR, was on 92.3
  16. I once had a double sighting at Kennedy Airport in NYC. I went to meet someone there, and I see this guy with hair going straight up, like he stuck his finger in an electrical outlet! It was Don King. A few minutes later, while waiting for my friend I saw Jimmy Knepper and I helped him find the right gate for his flight.
  17. So the NFL makes a big deal about player safety and then has the games officiated by a bunch of scabs, thus further endangering the players.
  18. Ubu & Jazzbo, many thanks, searching when 3/4 asleep is not a good recipe for results.
  19. Nah. PEDs only happen in the Bay Area. Exactly. Melky Cabrera's BA in Chop-lanta was like .158 or something then all of a sudden he's hitting out of his shoes in KC. But the Giants were the reason why he was on PEDs. Sure. The East Coast guys are just pushed out of shape because Bud Selig made the All-Star Game result the home field advantage. Melky gets the MVP, the Yankees fans get all up in a lather [assuming they make it to the WS] and all of a sudden it's about the Giants and PEDs. Fine. Whatever. Tonight, I just want to see a Giants sweep of the [hated] Dodgers. So you're OK with a cheater maybe deciding home field advantage in the WS?
  20. Do you have a link? Searching for them is a PITA! Many thanks.
  21. RIP and thanks for many laughs over many years.
  22. He beat the Yanks a few weeks ago and was brilliant, congrats to a good pitcher. Jim Sangrey, did you see the Yanks/Rangers last night? Very good game, scoreless into the 7th, when Ogando came on in relief and gave up a couple or dingers. Hiroki Kuroda pitched a great game, 2 hits, 2 walks no runs, no-hit for 6.
  23. Those Bosox players come off as a bunch of whining wussies! Everyone here has had a boss or two that they didn't like, that's life. You make sure you do your job and do it well regardles of who the boss is.Seems to me the Bosox players have been pampered and coddled to the max.
