  1. I can't see Sloan and Kobe coexisting for any appreciable length of time- that's oil & water.
  2. It felt like it took me four days to get to work today! I live in Brooklyn but work in Jersey City, but the company I'm working at now has offices in Manhattan, so they let me work there today and tomorrow. With no subways, I took an express bus to Manhattan, and the traffic was horrible, it took me over two hours for a commute that should be about 50 minutes. The way home was a blast as well- I walked to the first stop of the express bus(about 12 blocks), figuring they'd get crowded, and I was right. I left the office at 5:00 and walked into my house at 7:45. Power was restored to my whole block this morning. I'm on one end of the block, and I had power except for about 4-5 hours when ConEd cut it off to do repairs. About 3/4 of my block was without power, and last night I looked down the block and there were no cars coming, and it was total darkness, unusual in a city. I hope the folks in NJ and Long Island get plenty of help, as they got slammed bad by Sandy. A friend of my wife's lives in Long Beach, LI, and she didn't evacuate. She now has no power and contaminated water and my wife can't reach her. The town had a beautiful boardwalk that is now underwater.
  3. I would think some of the free agents this year will be sorely disappointed. The Yanks will not be major players in any way except for one year deals. GM Brian Cashman is under orders to reduce the payroll to get below $189Mil for 2014 when large luxury tax penalties kick in. The infield alone is around $80Mil!
  4. Howard has been Shaqiriffic in his free throw futility. The Lakers may have to avoid letting Howard touch the ball at the end of games or we may hack-a-shaq part two.
  5. Ford Frick Kenesaw Mountain Landis Bud Selig
  6. OTOH, with Romo as the set-up man to Wilson, the Giants will be deadly in the late innings. IF Wilson comes back the same as he was.
  7. None taken; I knew that was the reason. We prefer our sports odd and complicated. Now that cricket thing has some possibilities; I can't figure it out for shit. I don't really get the scoring, but a sport where a guy can score 100 runs in one at-bat is intriguing. The ball they use is hollow, which I found out by chance while walking by a cricket game and picking up an errant ball to toss back to the players. Cricket is pretty big in Brooklyn because we have a large number of folks from the Caribbean who all played it in their home countries.
  8. We have heavy winds, some rain, and flooding in areas of NYC on to the water. The storm hasn't even really hit yet. I have outside power lines, so I hope they hold up as thet did during Irene. The tabloids here are calling it 'Frankenstorm'. I secured my backyard, tied my grill to the fence, put paving stones in the garbage cans, I got plenty of food, batteries for the flashlights and a gas stove, so I can cook and see. I may not be back to work until Wednesday, as the NYC subways are closed and won't BEGIN to reopen until about 12 hours after the storm has passed.
  9. Arthur Prysock? Ray Charles/Betty Carter? MG MG, I think SS1 means what's marketed as 'smooth jazz' but is really instrumental R'n'B with all rough edges shaved away and almost no relationship to blues at all. Rippingtons and their ilk.
  10. How about Zito bunting for an RBI basehit with two outs? Ballsy move and very smart with Freese playing back at third. Of course Zito had to hustle to first and the throw was a bit off, but I was watching and let out a few holy s--ts.
  11. Playing with conviction Playing like your hair's on fire Taking a leap and maybe not knowing where you'll land
  12. High five to SS1 for that!!!
  13. I'm afraid it's a 24 hour reprieve from the governor. I'd love to be wrong, but the Yanks are toast. Good pitching + no hitting= losing
  14. USADA can't prosecute Armstrong, but the Feds seem uninterested despite what looks like a criminal conspiracy. It would be piling on if Armstrong would ever 'fess up. A quick summary of Armstrong's position: 1) I'm telling the truth and everyone else is lying 2) The(seemingly) only non-doper won 7 TDF, but the dopers kept doping
  15. Here's hoping my guys can avoid the sweep. Grrrrr Watching this series has to this point been kind of a weird schizo deja-vu for me, like watching the Good Rangers play the Bad Rangers. Maybe you need the Power Rangers! http://www.rangercentral.com/
  16. Yeah, wait until you're 100%, then you might find your dream set. (with Brooklyn accent)Yeah, in yer dreams!
  17. How'd that one work out for you? Note to SS1 - Indians are a better bet for the near future. Francona's a good man and he may help turn things around. As for the Browns . Isn't about time to admit that Holmgren ain't got 'it' anymore? In the days of free agency, the draft and one-way contracts, there seems to be no reason other than poor management to go more than three years without a playoff spot or coming darn close.
  18. Do you have CVS, Rite-aid or some other large drugstore chain by you? They usually stock up on that stuff. I won't buy it, 'cause I'll sit there till the bag is empty or a filling falls out.
  19. It made the division races meaningful. I think you get that with the previous system of allowing only one WC team. With one wild card there's no premium to winning the division, as the wild card only gets less home games. With two wild cards, you run the risk, if you're a wild card, of one game and you're out. With one wild card there's a five game series for the wild card. That scenario is what drove the Yanks and O's to battle it out to the end, as neither team wanted to face a one and done situation. I'm a Yank fan through and through, but much respect and admiration for the A's & O's and their battles to make the playoffs. Both teams have just about no household names, but they both play hard and give it everything they've got. I think for manager of the year in the AL we need two winners, Showalter & Melvin, both deserve it richly. A side note- the A's traded Gio Gonzalez in the offseason, he might win the Cy Young, and the A's STILL make the playoffs- amazing!!!
  20. I forget who, but some pundit said that to believe in prayer, one must believe God is a cosmic bellhop.
  21. They are all in the playoffs, but what is at stake is winning the division and home field "advantage," which will be a real advantage in the future but not so much this year. Division winners Yankees Tigers Athletics Wild card Orioles Rangers UNLESS Orioles win tonight v Tampa and Yankees lose to Red Sox, which would tie them with NY. Not sure but I believe they would actually play a one game playoff to decide which one is division champ and which one is wild card. I might be wrong about that. Bottom line: It's not so much your argument but your sentiment I agree with, that Selig is an idiot. Yanks are winning big now and O's losing by 4, so Yanks are division winners and O's wild card. O's and Rangers play one game to see who advances to the next round against the A's, other series is Yanks-Tigers. If the Yanks and O's had finished tied, there would have been a 163rd game to decide the division winner. Because of the advantage of winning the division they would have had to play a 163rd game to decide it, as the wild card winner plays one game and it's in or out. Either O's fans or Ranger fans will be heartbroken.
  22. Ding. I think we have a winner. Actually you might be right in terms of the amount of construction and invention in his longer solos. The Vanguard stuff (the LP selection of tracks, I mean) is a benchmark. A lot of his records don't really show what he can do though. That's the conundrum of Sonny Rollins- his recordings, for the most part, don't do him justice. When I was listening to jazz as a 17 year old in 1972, I had the good fortune to see him a number of times at the Village Vanguard and I was utterly blown away by how he could play a long solo that was packed with ideas and could suddenly shift into something else.Of course in the middle of one of these amazing solos he'd quote a standard or a hoary pop tune. It was genius at work.
  23. 1(a Sting disc) to zip
  24. Don't forget Sonny Rollins!
  25. I'm a Yankee fan, but this year's Orioles might just be one of those teams of destiny. Much as I hate to say it, they're enjoyable to watch as they keep playing hard and keep on coming. Me too, I'm thinking it will be one game to decide the AL East in game #163, loser to the wild card.Showalter's teams tend to do well in year three of his managing. If they buy tickets...
