Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge
PHILLYQ replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I went to my February live show this past Friday at Sullivan Hall in NYC and caught Charlie Hunter. Helluva show, Hunter was really enjoying himself and playing his ass off. he had a drummer, Hammond organ on every tune and he was joined by a bari sax and trumpet for some tunes. Big groove, appreciative crowd, loads of fun. Opening up was a group called Otis Grove, an organ trio with guitar, and they were pretty good also. Next month, three days, three concerts. 3/19 & 3/20 are Allman Brothers(Rumors abound that Eric Clapton will play on 3/20 & 3/21, but those rumors are around every year) and 3/21 is a traditional Irish Band. -
Bring the air freshener if you feel the need, but do go and see them. Great writing and playing and a lot of fun!!!How often can you laugh and dig some smokin' tunes at the same time? I saw them last year and loved it, and I'm hoping I can see them this year when they make their East Coast swing.

Not to mention that there are 103 other names out there someplace. Just because someone only blew the whistle on A-Rod doesn't negate that fact. Selig's true occupational calling was automobile sales. That's precisely where he should have stayed. Up over and out. Also not to mention that it was agreed, when the players took this test, that there would be no punishment for a positive result. Bud, just retire already, you're making a fool of yourself. yeah, but Bud made over $18million last year, he'd hafta sell a LOT of cars to make that! One of the local sportswriters calls him 'Nutty Professor' and I think it suits him to a tee.

Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge

Not jazz, but I saw Falu on 1/4. She's a singer who calls her music 'Hindi-indie'. Nice gig at an unbeatable price(free). here's her website: http://www.falumusic.com/ I also saw the Dave Holland Octet on 1/9, and it was stunning! Five horns(Trumpet- Alex Sipagian, Trombone- Robin Eubanks, Alto- Antonio Hart, Tenor- Chris Potter, baritone- Gary Smulyan) plus Steve Nelson on vibes and Nate Smith on drums. Tight, loose, swinging, powerful, delicate- they were like a small big band. Coming up for February is Charlie Hunter on the 19th. I've never seen him play, so I'm excited March is two consecutive nights of the Allman Brothers and the next day some traditional irish band(the David Munnelly band) April is Jeff Beck -

I was watching that show with Andrew Zimern(the one where he eats unusual food around the world), and he went somewhere in India and drank some cow pee mixed with herbs. Now he eats odd food for a living and he looked like he was ready to hurl!!! -
Looks like these are all bootlegs-if so, we don't go for that stuff here.

For all the good they do and how well they treat customers it seems only fair to return the extra set or offer to pay for it if you want to keep it.

The two 'Kill Bill' movies are a lot of fun and the price is good- somebody should snap them up and get a massive bowl of popcorn and have hours of fun!

I think Chuck's got a great approach here. When you hear someone good on a disc, investigate that player, etc. I started with Mahavishnu, then Miles, then people who played with Miles, people who played with people who played with Miles, etc.

For what it's worth Shawn, I suffer from depression frequently and many times deeply. Please hang in there even though right now it sucks completely- hope is all we have...

My best wishes go out to both of you and I hope you both find something soon or things pick up for you. I just found out last week that I've been spared the ax. I work for a large bank and they decided that after outsourcing thousands of jobs to India that they wanted to move the jobs that legally couldn't go to India to Jacksonville Florida. I work in a department of about 30 people, and the bosses announced that every job except mine and four other people would be gone south by July. If anyone wanted to move down there they would have to take a 35% pay cut. I'm happy I survived, but the future doesn't look so bright. A year from now they may have people down there that will work cheap and could replace me and then I'm history.

The Cardinals have more than a puncher's chance to win. Their defense has been playing well and could do a good job of shutting down the Steelers, especially if Hines Ward is not healthy. On the other side of the ball I think the Steeler defense will have its hands full with the speed of Arizona. If Arizona gets behind, they can score very quickly and get back into the game. This could be a lot closer than predicted so far.

Great news that Reptet is coming east again this year! I'm already excited to see you guys again.

You should also consider plate appearances when judging- did Rice or Manny have a large difference from each other?
