  1. I love Fela with all my heart, but this kind of stuff gives me the heebie-jeebies. I also don't trust "Afrofunk" bands that are mostly Brooklyn honkeys either. What next "Huey Newton!" the musical? Have you ever seen Antibalas? They're not a band of 'mostly Brooklyn honkeys', they are mutiracial, and Brooklyn has quite a few people who were born in Africa. I've seen Antibalas play and they would be a perfect fit to a musical about Fela as they draw much inspiration from Fela. Perhaps you should try listening to their music.
  2. For future Road Shows compilations, Anderson and Rollins will have not only their own archives and Carl Smith's to draw from. "People have also submitted things to us," says Anderson, "most recently a tape from Keystone Korner in the mid-1970s and a cassette from the Bottom Line. The bands are different, the material's different; the one common denominator is Sonny killin' through all of it." I saw Rollins a bunch of times at the Village Vanguard around '73/4, and if there are any tapes of those shows, well, those were staggering. Imagine a packed club with all jaws scraping the floor as Rollins blew everyone away. He had a great band then, too, with Mtume, David Lee Jr, etc.
  3. In the present environment(free agency, one-way contracts, losing teams get weak schedules) no team should go more than 3-4 years between playoff appearances. If they go as long as the Lions & the Raiders it's because of shoddy management. Matt Millen is a disgrace and should have been fired 2-3 yeras ago.
  4. The Big Bang is coming out tomorrow? I thought they were still trying to recreate it in Switzerland!!!
  5. Guy, Good luck on your triathlon- if you're in need of advice you can always ask JLO, she just did one!
  6. Ah, the judge probably just said that so he didn't have to read the damn thing! Could be, that was the most difficult book I've ever read, bits of Latin, French(good thing I studied both in high school), a play in the middle of the book, etc. I spent about 2-3 hours a day on it for over a month.
  7. Mine is 83, but they list the local library as being alomost half a mile away when it's about 5/6 blocks away.
  8. In high school(a Catholic school) I read Joyce's 'Ulysses', ans my copy had a copy of the court order overturning the banning. The judge found that it was not obscene.
  9. Isn't it 'Invaders From Mars,' the B&W film with the spaceship drilling into the land behind the house and everyone keeps falling into the hole and having an operation to implant a device to control them?. That's the one! I saw that many times over on TV as a kid, when they had Chiller Theater and my local station would play the same movie about 3/4 times in a row. That was another movie that scared the crap out of me as a kid. There was the creepy-looking head in the glass bowl also.
  10. For some starnge reason I remember 'The Boy With the Green Hair' from my childhood, seeing it when I was about 5 or 6. The really odd part is that at time my family only had a black & white TV! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040185/

  12. Keeps me sane at work for a week listening to new stuff, and then I pass most of them on to new homes eventually at around the same price. basically breaking even financially on it and learning about more music. Works for me and Dan is glad to sell them, so win-win. Do you get to listen to music while you're at work, John? If so, I am super jealous! It is true that John passes the music on at low prices. At least he has to me in the past. I've dealt with Felser as both buyer and seller. He pays promptly and sells at a very resonable price- aces to me.
  13. I got 29-it does help that I have a head full of useless information.
  14. There is also a price to pay for "Agreeing with everything she wants"- you may start to lose yourself and lose track of what YOU want. You may become one of those 'Whatever you want' guys and the more you do that the more you may find some resentment biulding up because you rarely do what YOU want. There's a fine line there, that if you cross it you land in a deep pit of self-abnegation. Unfortunately I speak from experience and it's also very painful, perhaps even more than being blasted for wanting what you want. Just my $0.02, YMMV. Whatever happens, Alexander, be a good daddy to your young daughter and resist the temptation to knock your (ex)wife in front of your daughter. Best of luck to you.

  22. Tonight was chicken cutlets with a Mexican spice rub on the grill and a salad of avocado, cilantro, peppers, jalapeno, heirloom tomato, red onion, cumin, black pepper, lime juice and olive oil.
  23. I fervently hope that they do some new material and record with this lineup-they're outstanding!!! I'm hoping that they make the 8/15 show available as a download- I'd buy it immediately. Harrison fit in beautifully with the group and he and Mastelotto really worked in sync with each other to where it seemed like a very talented octopus was playing drums.
  24. Turkey cutlets with a spice rub on the grill and a salad of corn, string beans, peppers, tomatoes, red onion, cucumber & cilantro tossed with rice wine vinegar & olive oil.
  25. Well, I went to see KC last night at the Nokia Theater in NYC and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! They came out firing on all cylinders from the start and never let up. This is about the 5th or 6th time I've seen them over the last 25+ years and this might have been the best concert. I don't have a setlist(haven't looked yet but there's probably one on DGMlive), but they played pretty much all the good stuff from about '81 on. The set included Neurotica, Elephant Talk, Three of a Perfect Pair, Indiscipline, Larks Tongue, Red, etc. The two drummers were terrific, sometimes one kept a beat while the other moved around the beat and accented, and they had about three or four short duets. On one of them they played cymbals almost exclusively, showing a lot of sublety and restraint. Tony Levin played mostly stick, which allowed him to hit some higher notes at times and almost make it a three guitar sound in some parts. Fripp and Belew were great- I thought Belew would bust his whammy bar on Indiscipline. He abused his guitar mightily all evening and got some truly bizarre sounds out of it. Fripp played ultra clean and pure, so the contrast made for some great listening. If they come back to do some more dates next year or if you can catch them tonight or tomorrow night, GO!!!!!
