Cliff Lee threw his 2nd complete game shut out IN A ROW last night*. Lee is 4-0 with a 0.27 ERA for the month of June. That's twice as many wins then the Marlins have this month! * He has 3 complete game shut outs this season and combined w/ Ryan Madson for another shut out.

40 years ago today..... Rick Wise: Two home runs ... and a no-hitter June 23, 1971: Wise pitches the second no-hitter against the Reds in three weeks, walking only one batter. Earlier in the year, Wise explained what you had to do as a starter to get a win for the last-place Phillies: "To win on this club you have to pitch a shutout and hit a homer." Wise's performance isn't just lucky -- in 1971 he had 6 HRs and a .237 batting average. Only four Phillies had more homers than he did, and his batting average was higher than the team's measly .233. In the off season Wise would be traded to St.Louis for..... Anyone?...... wait for it...... Steve Carlton!!

Latest on the Clemens trial Meanwhile, prosecutors want to limit what Clemens' attorneys can ask McNamee about a sexual assault investigation that the government lawyers said could "inflame the jury." McNamee was questioned by Florida police as a suspect in a October 2001 sexual assault. Clemens' attorneys have consistently raised the Florida investigation as evidence that McNamee is a troubled man who cannot be trusted. McNamee was never charged, but he admitted lying to police. At the time, McNamee was an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the New York Yankees and had accompanied the team to a series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Police reports said McNamee was seen having sex with a drugged and incoherent woman in a St. Petersburg hotel pool. The woman told police she could not remember what happened but she did not give McNamee permission to have sex with her, and witnesses reported hearing her saying, "No." The date rape drug GHB was found in her system. No way Clemens gets convicted if the jury finds out about this.

What a crazy game between the Phils and the Cards tonight. The Cards were leading 2-1 going into the top of the 8th and the Phillies scored 9 times. The inning went something like this - out, single, BB, HBP, HBP, K, single, BB, BB, single, BB, single, single, out. 10-2 now in the top of 9th. **** This needs to be said - incredibly shitty strike zone by the ump Mike Estabrook tonight. It moved all over the place.

Well for a first start I was pretty pleased, would be totally thrilled if he hadn't left a fastball up and given up the tying three-run blast in the sixth. Up to then nothing not to like - six Ks to 3 BBs, good curveball and of course the fastball has some serious life to it. I have to say that if he permanently cuts down on the walks he could at minimum be a servicable starter for us. If he really figures it out completely, he could be an awesome weapon to go with Lester and Buch. Not sure if Miller will ever figure it out. That's what the Tigers and Marlins thought too. He was awful the past two seasons whenever pitched against the Phillies.

Marlins lose again last night. That's 8 in a row, 1-16 for June and they have lost 18 of their last 20 games. New manager by Monday?

How about the Mess?? Leading the Braves by 2 runs going into the bottom of the 9th and Atlanta ties it. Then in the 10 the Braves win the game on a walk off BALK. Marlins managed 2 hits today off of Cliff Lee. They have now lost 17 out of 19. Cliff has been awesome his last 3 starts w/ an 0.38 ERA. From ESPN... Cliff Lee is 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA, holding hitters to a .160 batting average over his last three starts, all of which have been at Citizens Bank Park. His success at home this season is even more staggering when compared to his struggles on the road. Cliff Lee's Home and Road Splits HOME ROAD W-L 6-1 1-4 ERA 1.88 5.35 K/BB 72/12 39/12 9-3, 2.10 ERA (24 ER / 102.2 IP) in 14 career starts at Citizens Bank Park

Strange that in the USA we save the rioting/looting/violence for celebrating championships not losing them. I can understand being pissed off and wanting to destroy things but the whole,"Hey we just won the ______________ now let's go destroy our downtown," mentality is something I'll never get.

The Marlins are in a MAJOR free fall right now. They came into Philly yesterday having lost 13 out of 15 games and promptly got shellacked 9-1 and 8-1 by the Fightin's. Things were looking better for them in the nightcap of today's doubleheader when they took a two run lead into the 9th after getting to Doc Halladay for 4 earned runs. But the Phillies came back to tie the game in the 9th and won it on a Carlos Ruiz single in the bottom the 10th to send the Marlins to their 16th loss in 18 games! They have won one game so far this month. The Marlins reward for all of their outstanding play?? Cliff Lee(who has been throwing smoke lately) tomorrow afternoon to finish out the series.

Funny that they would list the Fort Dix home as being on the most endangered list when his Philly home, which is also on the Nat'l Register, is in much worse condition.
