I went to both nights. Unfortunately I missed the first half of Saturday's concert - including Roscoe playing a improvised duet w/ Evan Parker. I heard that the show opened up w/ "8-8-88" that was played on a Bosendorfer by the S.E.M.'s pianist. This was followed by a duet w/ the pianist and Thomas Buckner and then the Roscoe/EP duet. The Saturday night show was in a big room that easily sat 250 and it was packed! Sunday's show was at a smaller venue and was very well attended. Both night's performances were great. Unfortunately Saturday night went unrecorded. Alas. Sunday's performance was recorded w/ Roscoe's blessing, however. I enjoyed the two pieces that the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble performed on Saturday, with Nonaah being the highlight. Come to think of it that performance was really incredible w/ the expanded orchestra. Roscoe looked to be in a great mood all weekend and played his socks off on Sunday night. Hard to believe that he's 70.

Jason Kidd the wife beater? You're happy for him? Congrats to the Dallas. The better team won. -
Definitely run Malwarebytes. I bought Malwarebytes recently, but I don't understand it. I have it running on my machine, and it frequently says that it is blocking sites which attempt to access my computer. It is the only anti-virus program I have on my computer. Am I supposed to be running another anti-virus program in addition to it? I've only used the free version which does not have real time protection. I just use it for as an malware removal tool. I would go w/ another anti-virsus program that is designed for that purpose. Microsoft Security Esentials is free software for anti-virus protection which I use. I've been using it for about 6 months w/out any problems. Go to CNET and check out the free downloads.

Paps makes a good point about Carlisle. I can't help but wonder if the Heat had a coach w/ NBA head coaching experience if this series would be over by now. They just can't close out games. Edit for spelling. -
Jesus H. Christ I can't believe we just gave away a game to the Cubs. The Phillies have this maddening way of lowering themselves to the same level of the dregs of the NL. Tonight's game was just ridiculous.

He just played so passively. It's like he had no desire to be on the court at all. He's the anti-Jordan. -

LBJ held to 2 points in the 4th. Those 2 came on a layup w/ 0:29 left in the game when the outcome was no longer in doubt. -

Did anyone else just see that half court shot Mario Chalmers made at the end of the first quarter?? Holy smokes!! -
Cole Hamels is throwing some downright nasty, filthy stuff this season. So far he's having the best season of the Phantastic Phour. He's 8-2 w/ 2.58 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. He should have at 2-3 more wins. For example last week he allowed 1 hit over 9 innings and got a no decision.

I'm tellin' ya. This series ended the other night. The Bruins win this in 6. Now... let's talk about 2012. Can you say Ilyadelphia Fllyers??

Not sure anyone can hold a candle these days to Bryce Harper, the Washington wunderkind now laboring in the low minors. After stopping to admire his long ball handiwork the other night for an exaggerated length of time, and pissing off the pitcher in the process, he gave him a pucker as he trotted between third and home. I think if I was this kid, I'd either dial it down a notch or reinforce the padding in my batting helmet. It's exactly because he doesn't do that shit is one of the reasons why I admire Chase Utley. Doesn't matter if he hits a home run or strikes out he never changes the expression on his face. It's all business.

AACM | GREAT BLACK MUSIC A festival presented by Ars Nova Workshop Saturday, June 11, 8pm AN EVENING OF CHAMBER WORKS BY ROSCOE MITCHELL performed by the S.E.M ENSEMBLE, THOMAS BUCKER, JOSEPH KUBERA, and ROSCOE MITCHELL-EVAN PARKER DUO German Society of Pennsylvania, 611 Spring Garden Street $15 General Admission “Even in the jazz avant-garde, Roscoe Mitchell qualifies as an iconoclast. He uses ideas from Western and non-Western classical music, as well as the jazz tradition, to write music that swings like mad or, deliberately, doesn't swing at all.” -The New York Times In celebration of Roscoe Mitchell's 70th birthday, please join Ars Nova Workshop for night one of our Composer Portrait: Roscoe Mitchell series featuring various chamber works written throughout his career including "Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City" and "NONAAH" (for chamber ensemble), "three poems by e.e. cummings (for piano and voice)," and "8-8-88" (for piano). Tonight will also feature a very special duo performance by Roscoe Mitchell and British saxophonist Evan Parker. http://arsnovaworkshop.org/events/evening-chamber-works-roscoe-mitchell-06-11-2011 Supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sunday, June 12, 8pm ROSCOE MITCHELL AND THE SOUND ENSEMBLE Roscoe Mitchell, saxophones Hugh Ragin, trumpet Spencer Barefield, guitar Jaribu Shahid, double-bass Tani Tabbal, drums [6pm | A free public discussion with Roscoe Mitchell and Nate Chinen] Settlement Music School, 416 Queen Street $15 General Admission Please join Ars Nova Workshop for night two of our Composer Portrait: Roscoe Mitchell series featuring a performance by Mitchell's Sound Ensemble, a quintet with Hugh Ragin, Spencer Barefield, Tani Tabbal, and Jaribu Shahid. A free pre-concert public discussion will be held at 6pm with New York Times music writer Nate Chinen and Mitchell: they will discuss the AACM's legacy and future, as well as Mitchell's current work. A leader in the field of avant-garde jazz and contemporary music, composer-performer Roscoe Mitchell is a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, the AACM, and the Trio Space. His role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, his innovation as a solo woodwind performer, and his reassertion of the jazz composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over four decades. He has recorded over 90 albums and has written over 250 compositions, which range from classical to contemporary, wild and forceful, and free jazz to ornate chamber music. He is currently a faculty member at Mills College, and has recently worked with Vijay Iyer, Dave Burrell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Craig Taborn, the Janåcek Philharmonic, and the S.E.M. Ensemble. http://arsnovaworkshop.org/events/roscoe-mitchell-and-sound-ensemble-06-12-2011 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Monday, June 13, 8pm HENRY THREADGILL'S "BACKGROUND" (for saxophone quartet) + MIKE REED-JEFF PARKER DUO [plus a public discussion with David Adler, Mike Reed and Jeff Parker] The Maas Building, 1325 Randolph Street $10 General Admission Please join Ars Nova Workshop for a special double-header featuring New York City's Collide Saxophone Quartet performing early AACM member Henry Threadgill's work, "Background," and a duo performance by young AACM members and Chicagoans Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Brian Blade, Joshua Redman) and Mike Reed (Rob Mazurek, Bill Dixon, Roscoe Mitchell). Wow. This series is over. And it all turned on one stupid play.

Thanks Milwaukee!

The two teams don't play again until August 12th. Hopefully, by then, heads will have cooled. Nonetheless, if I was leading off for the Marlins that night, I would expect the Giant's pitcher to buzz my tower. I love the Giants, they have a great spirit about them, but now they're just coming off as whiners. "Why not be hard nosed? If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy." Way to take the high road Brian Sabean. Real classy.

What a choke! Miami gave that game away. What was up w/ their D on the last possession? Miami had a foul to give but just let Dirk drive to the basket w/out anyone sliding over to help Bosh. WTF? I don't care how wide open you leave your man you can't let Dirk drive the lane like that. Memo to Pippen: None of MJ's teams ever coughed up a 15 point lead w/ 6 minutes to play in the finals. -

First win in 14 tries! Man, the Phillies stunk it up the last three days in DC. They need to get the ship righted this weekend in Pittsburgh. Them Bucs always play us tough. Very concerned about Oz and wondering if he might be headed back to the DL.

Exactly. And that's the sole reason I stopped watching the NBA. I have not watched a game since that fiasco and I don't plan to anytime soon. The league has become obsessed with "stars" at the expense of the beauty of the game itself. Here's the thing. How much of that show was the result of something LeBron wanted to do as opposed to how much David Stern, ESPN, their advertisers, Lebron's sponsers, etc, wanted to milk "The Decision" for every last drop of publicity?? I mean really? What surprises me about the whole "Decision" thing is how much LeBron still gets the blame while the Cavs owners(And Stern, ESPN, and the rest) get off Scott Free. I think LeBron was in a lose/lose situation once he decided to be part of the media circus. If he had stayed in Cleveland how many of you would be saying stuff like,"Oh he played us," or "What a letdown," or "I can't believe he is staying in cold, snowy Cleveland and playing for owners that won't get him the talent to win an NBA championship when he could be in sunny South Beach with a chance to play w/ Wade and Bosh? What a fool!"??? Re: Star thing. It's been that way since Jordan ascended to the throne back in the early 90's. His basketball greatness was only surpassed by his international marketing super stardom. The NBA knew that and exploited it. Let's face it - all of the professional sports organizations market their stars, not the game itself. After MJ retired the NBA's TV rating's dropped way off so "The Decision" was made to find the next Jordan. They tried Kobe but the public didn't buy it(I guess that rape accusation didn't help either) so they got Lebron. -
Ugh Cliff. Two homers to Danny Espinosa?? He came into the game hitting .205 for the season. WTF?
