More on how Andy Pettitte played a key role in getting Gerrit Cole to sign with the Yankees. Andy’s one of my all-time favorite Yankees... not surprised that Cole looked up to him when he was younger and sought his counsel so much during the meeting. AP’s not just a class act; he’s genuinely likable, and sports one of the best postseason pitching records in MLB history. Glad that he’s still part of the organization.

So Nolan Arenado's apparently deeply unhappy to be a Rockie now (dude, why did you sign that extension?!), but it doesn't sound as if Colorado's going to trade him. Sounds as if retirement's likely. So Dan, who are you favoring to lead the Red Sox, now that Mr. Cora has left in disgrace? Varitek? (I seem to recall your mentioning him shortly before they hired Cora.) Other? I've heard they may be interested in Mets bench coach Hensley Meulens. Some Yankees fans were pulling for him when he interviewed before the 2018 season. I don't know all that much about him. Seems like there's going to be a real scramble for the Astros, Red Sox, and Mets, with two top-tier managers fired/suspended (I would not be surprised to see somebody hire Hinch after this season; murkier waters ahead for Cora, given that he may face a longer suspension and has been so directly implicated in the Houston scheme, but I could see him coming back eventually as well) and a promising newcomer (Beltran) out of the picture as well.

Picked up where I left off with Season 1 last night (Blu-Ray set, choosing the "original effects" option, hooray), and watched "The Corbomite Maneuver" plus both parts of "The Menagerie," which cleverly works the show's rejected pilot into a new story. Also picked up Cushman's book about Season 1 again; I can't say enough about its depth of detail and anecdote for anybody who's interested in the actual production of the original series. It's amazing that they pulled this program off. I was born right around the time that the series commenced and have found myself wondering if it was a hip stoner show for its time... what *were* the hip stoner TV shows for the late 1960s? Laugh-In? Smothers Brothers? Others? Same here. I've read only several of Shakespeare's plays, for starters. And the world's filling up all the time with more cultural product. That's another bonus about this board--it serves as a sort of curatorial service if one so desires, given that the folks who post here tend to be a pretty savvy bunch, and not just in matters of jazz music. How have we not talked about this yet?!? We need to get together and watch a couple of our favorite episodes.

Found a still-sealed new copy on eBay today for $90 total (including shipping from the UK) so I pulled the trigger. I've got a couple of CDs that were reissued on Wounded Bird, plus several of the more prominent Sony Legacy suspects (Headhunters, Sextant, much of the VSOP material and a dub of Flood), but there's a fair amount here that I haven't heard before (for better or worse, it would seem, reading through this thread). Going into it all with open ears!
