Thanks for these recs, Brad. Watching Smiley’s People has got me on another le Carre jag. Just resumed reading Adam Sisman’s bio as well. I have to confess that I bogged down with A Perfect Spy but will try returning to it too. Intrigued by an earlier Smiley novel, The Looking Glass War... how’s that one, if you’ve read it?

I'm sure it's been discussed previously on the board, but last night I was listening to disc 1 of the Miles 1965-68 box set and really noticed the Tristano influence coming through on "Dolores." Googled out of curiosity and came across this article, which does indeed namecheck Miles Smiles (the original album on which "Dolores" appeared) as audible evidence of LT's influence on Herbie: The Lennie Tristano-Herbie Hancock Connection EDIT: I see to no surprise that it has been discussed before. Mods, feel free to delete this thread and add my comment to Allen's previously existing one.

Paths Of Glory is my favorite Douglas performance, but I also like him a great deal in Out Of The Past. Such an excellent foil for Robert Mitchum in that film.

No kidding! He was still a teenager, right? And playing with Lionel Hampton's band? Pretty cool that he'd already caught Hawk's ear. Also nice to see Hawk namechecking Bud Freeman and Eddie Miller as well.

If some online reports are true, Red Sox will be picking up half of Price's $30-million-plus annual salary for the next three years. They're getting Verdugo in return, as well as a pitching prospect via the Twins. Verdugo has definite potential to be a very good player and is under control for five years. But boy, my first reaction to this trade is that Boston got the short end of it, especially staying on the hook for that much of Price's contract. Maybe they try to resign Mookie in free agency after 2020?

... and Mookie Betts and David Price are apparently headed to the Dodgers.
