That must have changed at some point--there were very few tables last year. I didn't mind, but a jazz writer (fairly young guy, too) had warned me that any lengthy stay for a series of sets would most likely involve standing the whole time. I found a good column to lean on, though. This year there were plenty of places to sit, but I had bought a cheaper non-seated ticket, so this time around held up a wall, in tribute to that great supporter of building structures, Mr. Harpo Marx:

You beat me to it. NY Times article: Carlos Beltran resigns -
They have a fair amount of tables now--configured quite differently than when I attended a show there a year ago.

Thanks so much for posting this. Mark Stryker and I were discussing at the Detroit jazz event the other night at Le Poisson Rouge--we think (and a NYC friend said this as well) that LPR occupies the same basement space where the Village Gate once was? The address is off by two numbers (158 vs 160 Bleecker) but my NYC friend swears up and down that LPR is where the Gate was. I also visited the newly-reopened Cafe Bohemia Tuesday night; the performance space is in the cellar (and apparently was in the upstairs part in the 1950s) and certainly gives off a 50s Village vibe. The site of Cafe Society is just half a block away (the home for many years now of the Axis Theater Company). The building where the original Birdland was at 52nd and Broadway still stands, though the basement space where the club was located was utilized as a strip bar from the early 1980s till recently.

Were you at Jazz Congress too? So sorry we didn’t cross paths. I also loved that 1938 big band broadcast, though doesn’t sound as if that material will be coming out any time soon. Ricky also mentioned that his book Heart Full Of Rhythm (focusing on Armstrong’s 1929-47 years) will be out in September.

A recent interview I did with Organissimo poster Mark Stryker is up for online listening: Mark Stryker on Profiles Lots of great stuff from Mark about growing up in Bloomington, how he fell in love with jazz, his work as a critic and writer, and more.

Maxine Gordon talked about this earlier today at Jazz Congress. Apparently they’re developing one for Dexter Gordon as well. -

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox have decided not to wait for MLB judgment: Alex Cora is gone. -
Last art exhibition you visited?
ghost of miles replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Hal Prince exhibition last night, taken in with Marc Aronson, whose parents designed the sets for a number of Prince’s productions, including Fiddler On The Roof and Cabaret. Well worth checking out. Also, not really an art exhibition per se, but the NYPL’s J.D. Salinger exhibit made this longtime JDS obsessive extremely happy. Hoping to give it another go-through before I leave on Wednesday. -
Board Members You've Had the Pleasure of Meeting

I had the profound pleasure yesterday of meeting Allen Lowe at Jazz Congress! I believe he is holding the office of The Most Dangerous Man In Jazz (I am a mere representative from the sticks). Truly a joy to encounter him in person. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Went to see the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra—nice run-through of some Thad Jones and Jim MnNeely compositions, and a thrill to hear Bob Brookmeyer’s arrangement of “St. Louis Blues” played live. They wrapped up with Jerome Richardson’s “Groove Merchant,” with trumpeter Terrell Stafford’s solo threatening serious damage to the Vanguard’s ceiling. On to Cafe Bohemia for Wallace Roney tomorrow night. -

Yeah, whatever. Of course Crane’s going to say that. MLB’s investigation says they continued to use the system throughout the 2017 postseason. It’s totally tainted. The Houston Asterisks. -

Astros just fired Hinch and Luhnow. Sounds like Cora’s going to get hammered pretty hard as well by MLB. -

Astros’ Hinch, Luhnow suspended without pay for 2020 season Astros also fined $5 million and lose first and second round draft picks for 2020 and 2021. Via Pinstripe Alley: Jeff Passan, meanwhile, reports that Red Sox manager Alex Cora faces “harsh” discipline as a result of his involvement. Carlos Beltran, while a key individual involved in the scheme, will not be punished as he was a player at the time, not a team official, says Andy Martino. -

Mark Stryker kicked off the Detroit event last night with a panel discussion that included Bob Hurst, Karriem Riggins, and Joan Belgrave. So LPR is apparently in the same basement space that the Village Gate used to occupy? That’s what a friend told me. I may go see Artemis tonight—but am also thinking about catching the Vanguard Orchestra’s Monday-night performance, just because I’ve never been to that long-running institution of VV jazz. -

Yes, that's actually a fairly standard slash line these days. OBP is now considered by many to be a more pertinent stat than batting average. Then there's OPS, which is on-base percentage combined with slugging percentage... Bellinger's OPS last year was a sky-high 1.035. -
I and several other junior-high friends were quite the Rush-heads circa 1979-81 and went to see Rush on the Moving Pictures tour when they came through Indianapolis. Oddly enough, pre-Internet and social media, we heard constant rumors back then that Peart was ill with cancer, which of course proved not to be the case... he lived nearly another 40 years. Glad to see him getting so much respect from Sanchez and others.

Very sorry to hear this as well. I actually got to see him in a church at the Stuttgart Jazz Festival in 2018--a very impressive performance, especially given that he must have already been battling health issues at that point.

I'm still waiting on my Buddy Bolden cylinder. Where is that Buddy Bolden cylinder that I ordered?!? If this delay continues, I'm going to take my Buddy Bolden cylinder business elsewhere!!! Will reiterate what Jsngry said. No worries on my end, have greatly enjoyed the music that I've purchased from you (at excellent prices) over the past year (especially the Black Saint/Soul Note boxes and the Steeplechase CDs). Best wishes for your new system in 2020. -
