  1. Paths Of Glory is my favorite Douglas performance, but I also like him a great deal in Out Of The Past. Such an excellent foil for Robert Mitchum in that film.
  2. Here we go again: Yankee starting pitcher James Paxton out 3-4 months after back surgery
  3. No kidding! He was still a teenager, right? And playing with Lionel Hampton's band? Pretty cool that he'd already caught Hawk's ear. Also nice to see Hawk namechecking Bud Freeman and Eddie Miller as well.
  4. I’ll probably rewatch Tinker after I finish Smiley’s People. The Guardian looks back at Tinker 40 years later Revisiting the first Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
  5. That was a great read—thanks so much, Brad. Planning to watch episode 2 of Smiley’s People tonight when I get home from work.
  6. If some online reports are true, Red Sox will be picking up half of Price's $30-million-plus annual salary for the next three years. They're getting Verdugo in return, as well as a pitching prospect via the Twins. Verdugo has definite potential to be a very good player and is under control for five years. But boy, my first reaction to this trade is that Boston got the short end of it, especially staying on the hook for that much of Price's contract. Maybe they try to resign Mookie in free agency after 2020?
  7. ... and Mookie Betts and David Price are apparently headed to the Dodgers.
  8. Mets sale in jeopardly, apparently?! 😮
  9. Just started Smiley’s People (British version). 👍
  10. The playlist for today's weekly classic-jazz edition, featuring music from the soundtrack to the new Miles Davis documentary Birth Of The Cool. I also managed to smuggle a Braxton recording into the show: Just You And Me playlist for Tuesday, February 4
  11. Boston Globe says a decision to trade Mookie Betts could come in the next few days. Meantime, we’re less than two weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting, and no one’s in the Red Sox managerial seat yet, though they’ve apparently begun to interview candidates.
  12. Disc 3/Dedication from the Herbie Hancock Columbia set. Solo piano, beautiful version of "Maiden Voyage."
  13. Behind The Racial Uproar At One Of The World's Best Jazz Stations
  14. For those who enjoy this set and the First Herd in general, a recommendation for this CD (Sultanof alludes to one of the two broadcasts it includes in his notes): One Two Three Four Jump
  15. More My Bloody Valentine: EPs 1988-91. I haven’t revisited it in several years—God, what a beautiful collection of music.
  16. No official confirmation that I can see yet, but USA Today is reporting that the Astros will name Dusty Baker as their manager.
