  1. I was telling my girlfriend the other night about seeing the Brewers at the old County Stadium during the Stormin'-Gorman/Ben Oglivie years when I was a kid (Brewers hit two home runs that night, prompting a slide from their mascot in each instance into a gigantic beer mug). In looking for footage or images of the old home-run beer-barrel slide, I came across this ad: What's Brewin' Reminds you of what the world used to look like, circa early 80s.
  2. It's the only part of the show for Yankee fans to enjoy. Another rocky start for Pineda today, another meltdown by Betances, and NY goes down to their 16th loss in the last 22 games. Going back further, they are 23-30 over their last 53 games, or nearly a third of a season. Blown saves have accounted for a lot of losses, but the team is injury-riddled and discombobulated right now. Looks like this might turn out to be the predicted "rebuilding year" after all.
  3. We re-aired this program last week and it remains posted for online listening: Shorter Lee: Lee Morgan And Wayne Shorter
  4. Got a used copy of this in excellent shape as an unexpected gift from a friend and am loving it:
  5. Just ordered the 2-CD Fresh Sounds version of this. What do others here who've heard it think?
  6. Up-and-down times for the Yankees of late. That Dustin Fowler injury Thursday night was a heartbreaker, but I love that Girardi had a closed-door team meeting to talk with him via FaceTime a few hours after his surgery. Clint Frazier being brought up today--can't remember in my lifetime when NY had so many exciting prospects in the pipeline. (Bummer about Glaybor Torres being out for the year, though. Bad injury bug for NY at both the major and minor league levels right now.) Glad to see them bounce back last night against Houston, which is pretty clearly the team to beat in the American League. Oh, and Aaron Judge is going to pile up a lot of walks before this season's over; the other night the White Sox intentionally walked him with two outs and nobody on, aka "the Barry Bonds treatment." Anyway, the Yankees are lucky after the past several weeks to be neck-and-neck with Boston in the AL East.
  7. Up for Elmo's birthday: Hope Lives: A Portrait Of Elmo Hope
  8. The NL West is monstrous this year--three teams over .600, and the top three records in baseball after the Astros (who pretty clearly seem like the team to beat in the American League). Reminiscent of the NL Central a couple of seasons back.
  9. On the NL side, Cody Bellinger's off to a helluva start--HR and RBI not far behind Judge's totals, and he didn't even make his MLB debut until three weeks into the season: Dodger rookie Cody Bellinger
  10. Incredible pitching duel last night between Darvish and Tanaka. Dan Gould, this one's for you: Special K: Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel is putting together one of the best relief seasons ever
  11. This week's Night Lights show highlights recordings made at Hermosa Beach's Lighthouse Cafe in the years following the dissolution of the All-Stars ensemble that had held court throughout the 1950s. Joe Henderson, Grant Green, the Three Sounds, Curtis Amy, Elvin Jones, the Jazz Crusaders, and Lee Morgan are among the featured artists: After The All-Stars: Live At The Lighthouse, 1960-1972 This previous program explores the 1950s All-Stars era: The Lighthouse All-Stars

  13. ... and a much more recent version, seen here last summer in Manchester, England with fellow Organissimo member BillF:
  14. A much younger version of me:
  15. Not enough... I'll try to get on it! If I ever end up doing a sequel, they'll definitely be in it.
  16. Up for Father's Day: Daddy-O! Father-and-Son Teams In Jazz
  17. Good Saturday night music:
  18. Looks like NY is headed to its fifth straight loss against a pair of .500 West Coast teams... how are Yankee fans feeling tonight?
  19. The starters have been struggling out west as well, and one who did pitch fairly decently is now on the DL. (CC) Not to mention Sanchez and Hicks being knocked out of the lineup for a bit with injuries. On a brighter note, Gleyber Torres is scorching the ball at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Chance Adams may be seeing the light of MLB day sooner than we'd expect.
  20. Yankees having an abysmal West Coast road trip, and most of the blame lies with the bullpen. Hopefully Chapman returns in regular form starting tomorrow... I think NY would have won last night if they'd been able to go to Betances in the 8th instead of having to keep him on tap for a potential 9th. In the meantime, Boston's now only one game behind.
  21. Both of these reissued once more: ASHA on Soul Jazz Records Listened to Asha last night--excellent record! Going to listen to Washington Suite this weekend.
