  1. Why would the Boston Globe have any interest in "WILLINGLY AND EAGERLY" f'ing up Greg Osby's career? He's all but unknown outside of the jazz world. Women across every spectrum of culture are coming out with stories of being sexually assaulted and harassed, and it's no surprise that evidently it's been a problem at Berklee as well. In any event I'm not responding to the allegations, I'm responding to what Osby is quoted as saying. So far he hasn't denied that he actually said those things. If the Globe prints a transcript or offers a recording that shows him saying, "Now, suppose I were to say (insert offending quote)," then yeah, he's been sadly wronged. But if you believe that, I have a Trump Tower I'd like to sell you. And no, the NY Times isn't perfect--they certainly screwed up their WMD reporting in the early 2000s, indirectly enabling the Bush admin's unwarranted invasion of Iraq... but I'll take them over Fox or Breitbart or RT or any other propaganda outlet disguising itself as a news organization any day. Btw it's the NY Times that broke the Weinstein story, not any of the previously-named organizations. (And Fox, of course, is riddled with its own culture of sexual harassment.)
  2. By all means, the Boston Globe should publish the full transcript of the interview. Hard for me to imagine a greater context where Osby's remarks "sound" better or don't come across as insensitive at best, but if the reporter is any kind of pro, the conversation was recorded and the quotes were not taken out of context. I have a high regard for old-school journalism, especially from papers like the Boston Globe and the New York Times, and if the Globe somehow misrepresented Osby here, they need to own up to it. I seriously doubt those quotes were invented out of whole cloth, and sure, let's see the context.
  3. Yeah, very unpleasant responses from Osby. As somebody noted on Facebook, describing it as "open season" once students have graduated certainly strikes a tone of women regarded as prey, and the quote about comparing his accuser's looks to those of his girlfriend sounded downright Trumpian. Not really surprised, though, that something so endemic to our culture would manifest itself in the jazz world and a jazz-education institution. The bigger surprise would be if that weren't the case. (This story also can't help but remind me of the jazz-ed folks who were so up in arms about Whiplash, which offered a study of a very different kind of abuse, but one couched in a similar teacher-student dynamic.) There's a ton of gender injustice in jazz's past, and a considerable amount still in effect today, but I also think there's a much higher level of consciousness emerging about it...and the young musicians I know today are of no mind to put up with it, either.
  4. Link to sound samples, discography, etc. At last! So glad there's a new Mosaic set on the way, and that it's this one in particular.
  5. I realize that the repertoire is much the same, but is there any actual overlap with the ESP set?
  6. Happy birthday and best wishes for an enjoyable year ahead that includes a NY Yankees return to the World Series! You're almost exactly the same age as my father (1945, it was a very good year!).

That's what he said a few weeks ago, the interview can be found here http://gregosby.blogspot.nl/2017/09/interview-for-jazzsoulpl-sopot-jazz-2017.html Great news, thanks much!
  8. Not late-period, but there are always the Frank Tiberi tapes. Didn't those amount to 86 discs worth of transferred material or some such? I've heard two different accounts as to why they haven't been released: (1) the Coltrane estate wanted too much money to sign off on such a project (2) sound quality isn't good enough. If it's (2), hard to believe that with modern audio technology they couldn't cull a nice box-set worth of material from those performances.
  9. Thanks for the heads-up, Don! Can never get enough mid-1940s bonus material from the Hurricane.

What's Osby up to these days? Only one leader date that I know of in the past 12 years... his Inner Circle label and website still seems to be active: Inner Circle Music
  11. Listening to this recent Blue Note release right now from long-time Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen and enjoying it a great deal. Here's a review from the online magazine Pitchfork: Tony Allen: The Source I somehow missed the Blakey EP tribute that came out earlier this year but would be curious to hear it as well.
  12. Haven't heard it, but curious to check out Scott's newest releases: Pitchfork review of The Centennial Trilogy
  13. I think Members Only Guy is a red herring and that this fellow emerged from the men's room (where he'd gone to wash his balls in ice water first) to shoot Tony.
  14. Rahsaan's a terrific musician--I saw him and his brother perform numerous times when they were both here at IU. Nice of him to namecheck Tom Walsh as well as David Baker, too.
  15. Thanks for the recommendation--I'll definitely check this out. Ken has deep knowledge of West Coast jazz and was very helpful when I was putting together a Night Lights show about the Lighthouse in the 1960s/early 70s. He's also the founder and director of the L.A. Jazz Institute.
  16. Yes, with Alex Cora going to the Red Sox, the Phillies tapping Gabe Kapler, and the Nats signing Dave Martinez, the Yankees have the only current managerial vacancy in baseball: List of MLB managers
  17. PM sent re Oliver Nelson BB & B and Shorty Rogers' Shorty Swings.
  18. I'd still offer him a one-year contract, if he's willing to play for $6-7 million or so. If NY somehow lands Shohei Otani, maybe not... but Otani's potential move to the MLB seems to be running into a snag: Money dispute could leave Japan's Babe Ruth stuck there
  19. PM sent re Pentangle, Sweet Child, and Basket Of Light Castle reissues. Sorry I missed the box set!
  20. Let the moves, speculations, rants, and wintry dreams begin! Masahiro Tanaka declines to opt out, stays with Yankees Very happy about this, and a wise move on Tanaka's part IMO, after the up-and-down season he had and the ongoing concern about his elbow. Hopefully this also means there's no chance that the Yankees will chase either Yu Darvish (though much respect to him as a pitcher and a person) or Jake Arrieta, as both will turn 32 next year and will most likely be seeking multi-year deals that take them to the end of their careers. So this puts NY's rotation next year as Severino/Tanaka/Gray, with Jordan Montgomery and possibly CC (will NY resign him to a one-year deal? I would, if I were Brian Cashman and company), or Chance Adams, if he's MLB-ready, filling out the back end. With Chapman, Kahnle, Robertson and Warren all coming back in the bullpen, the big question there is whether or not Dellin Betances can return to form... even if he can't, the bullpen looks pretty good right now.
  21. Yeah, bummer about Yu Darvish getting knocked out so early. George Springer has a chance now to break the record for most HRs in a World Series--oddly enough, he just tied not only Refgie Jackson but also Chase Utley, who's with the Dodgers now. My appreciation as well, Jim, for that great Roberts-Koufax story, and glad that you've passed along the good-dad legacy to your own son.
  22. We re-aired Hipsters, Flipsters, And On-The-Scenesters last week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  23. Very sorry to hear this--just pulled out the Black Saint/Soul Note set and some of the Delmarks for revisiting. Such an incredible artist.
  24. Game 7 on the way, baby, with Yu Darvish on the mound!
