  1. Last week's Night Lights show, with music from Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and others, and a timeline for the year's events, now up for online listening: 1961: New Jazz Frontier
  2. Agreed, Paul. The continuing omission of Mitchell is especially galling.
  3. True, this: All Should Rise For Gary Sanchez, Too I like the suggested Mantle-Maris potential. Also not to be overlooked are the stellar seasons that Gregorius, Castro, and Hicks are having so far. (Gregorius at .344 after last night's game!) I'm contemplating making a road trip to see them play this summer either in Cleveland or Chicago (gawd, I have to say that "Guaranteed Rate Field" is the worst name I've heard yet in the modern era of corporate-branded ballparks. Still Comiskey to me.)
  4. Up today in honor of Frank Strozier's 80th birthday (though retired from the music scene, still alive, as are Coleman and Mabern): The Memphis Mafia: Mabern, Strozier, Coleman and Little
  5. I'm starting to think (assuming he stays healthy) that he's got a decent shot at breaking Mark McGwire's rookie HR record (which would also make him the first rookie ever to hit 50 HR in a season). I was up till 1:45 last night watching the game...West Coast road trips are hard to stay awake for, but definitely worth it last night. Also good to see Tanaka finally get in a solid outing.
  6. ESPN reading my (and no doubt others') mind: With Judge starring, maybe Yankees won't need Bryce Harper after all
  7. Up for #76: Matrix: The Emergence Of Chick Corea
  8. Extended cut of Judge's mammoth home run today: Over the bleachers I also loved Didi's binoculars gesture (he's another player who's injecting a lot of fun into this year's team) and especially the way Judge put his head down and started running as soon as he hit it, instead of standing there or strolling while admiring his blast, a la Bryce Harper and so many others these days. (Also hoping that Judge's emergence makes it less likely that NY throws some mega contract Harper's way come winter 2018.)
  9. I agree--he's putting up Ted-Williams-type numbers at the plate and excelling in the field and on the base paths as well. And, as of this evening, leading the American League in HR, BA, and RBI. Very Mantle '56! The rest of this year's team ain't so bad either. (Sanchez's home run today made him only the 4th player in MLB history to hit 30 HR in his first 90 games.)
  10. After going 4-4 today (2 HR, double, single, and a walk) his BA is up to .344. His OBA and slugging pct must be soaring as well... Guy is unbelievable, just a joy to watch.
  11. Paul Secor, other Yankees fans, are you watching the game today? Judge just hit a 495-foot homer that nearly went off the retired-numbers wall above the bleachers! Aaron Judge's 495-foot home run First time since summer 1956 that the Yankees have scored eight or more runs five games in a row.
  12. Picked up this set for $16 at Landlocked a year or two ago and finally got around to listening to it over the past few days... wow! I already have some of it on other compilations, but it's a real treasure trove of music (I especially love the dates that involve a couple of Hoosiers, Big Sid Catlett and Sidney de Paris), and as Jazzbo noted, an amazing booklet, authored by Dan Morgenstern. If you see this at a reasonable price, snap it up, even if it's not the kind of jazz you ordinarily dig... I all but guarantee that you will eventually!
  13. Also working my way through this excellent set that I found used a couple of years ago:
  14. Up today for Benny Goodman's birthday: Benny Goodman's Interlude In Bop
  15. We're re-airing this show this week, but I'm upping it today in honor of Freddie Redd's 89th birthday: Ready For Freddie Redd
  16. This past week's Night Lights program up for online listening, including a tribute on a 1944 Orson Welles radio program to clarinetist Jimmy Noone, the Duke Ellington orchestra with Alice Babs performing Norris Turney's "Checkered Hat" salute to Johnny Hodges, Elvin Jones' "Lament For John Coltrane" from the Bob Thiele Emergency's Head Start album, and more: Turn Out The Stars Volume 5
  17. Little Leaguers cheering in the new "Judge's Chambers" section at Yankee Stadium today after Aaron Judge hit his first MLB grand-slam: Kids cheering from Judge's Chambers
  18. Thanks for this review; I've been curious as to what others have thought of the reboot. (I still haven't seen any of the new episodes yet.)
  19. Excellent magazine! (Full disclosure: I'm friends with editor Sascha Feinstein.) Congratulations, Late!
  20. I was a Rush fan in my junior-high/high-school days as well! Saw them on the Moving Pictures tour. He loved him madly.
