  1. Picked up the CD of this from Landlocked Music yesterday and absolutely agree, Lon. Reading the excellent booklet while listening to the music reinforces yet again how much I prefer a physical release to unadorned downloads. This is a wonderful record for Sunday morning, too. I love her singing!
  2. Agree about Pineda. Hey Jsngry, here's an article about the parallel improvement of Aaron Judge and the Texas Rangers' Joey Gallo: Judge and Gallo surge
  3. Hey Paul Secor, I was at work today during the Cubs-Yankees game at Wrigley, but checked in from time to time via GameDay and just now watched the 9th inning of the archived broadcast. What a great, gritty at-bat by Gardner to pull that game out for them with a two-out, two-strike home run! Yankees are looking really good so far--if Sanchez gets going and Bird finally overcomes his injuries and bad start, this is going to be an extremely potent batting order.
  4. A used copy of this that sounds as if it's in excellent condition for $88 right now on Amazon (I have no connection to the seller, just came across this while putting together a playlist for an upcoming Night Lights show): Illinois Jacquet Mosaic box
  5. I think the four unreleased tracks on disc 5 are actually from the abandoned Rubber Band project.
  6. Good music for a rainy Friday morning:
  7. Aaron Judge currently on pace to hit 81 HRs and collect 170 RBI. ☺️
  8. So glad you enjoyed it, JT! Michael has provided invaluable commentary for numerous Night Lights programs.. .I almost created a "Michael McGerr" tag for this post. There is actually a Michael McGerr tag on the Night Lights site.
  9. Yes, pretty sure that was the case at one point--that's why I was surprised that it could be done now. As for Mosaic, seems as if everybody in this thread is very supportive in one way or another--buy a set as a birthday or Christmas present for a friend, hip others to your favorite sets that are still available... and perhaps Mosaic should look into some sort of Kickstarter approach for developing certain sets, entice a few "angels" to help subsidize some collections that otherwise might not be economically viable for them to do. At the end of the day, if they have to close shop in the next few years, they'll still have made an incredible contribution to the documentation of jazz history. (Also, at a certain point, what's left to reissue in the way of big-box-sets from the 1930s/40s/50s/60s? The 70s and 80s much less tapped, 'tis true...) I love them as much as anybody and am trying to do whatever I can to help, but the older I get, the more I'm accepting (by necessity) of the whole nothing-lasts-forever paradigm.
  10. I thought only moderators could delete threads these days? Or did the thread-starter in question still have moderator status?
  11. Various artists, Spiritual Jazz V. 7: Islam (cd version):
  12. You're absolutely right about his improved pitch selection, Paul--I've noticed that as well. Really impressed with the Yankees so far, and they've put this run together without Gary Sanchez. Great play off the bench from Romine, Torreyes, and Hicks. If Pineda, Severino, and Montgomery can sustain their out-of-the-gate performances, the starting rotation will be better than anticipated, and I can see this team contending for the AL East and beyond. A good blend of veterans and younger players too, and excellent prospects like Torres and Frazier in the pipeline. A dramatic turnaround from the team that opened the season a year ago! Always amusing whenever the tallest and shortest Yankee greet each other at home plate:
  13. Aaron freakin' Judge!!! #99 leading the American League in home runs now with ten--and, barring a complete meltdown by the NY bullpen in the last two innings today, the Yankees will finish April either tied for or in sole possession of first place in the AL East. I did not see that coming, even on the heels of a good spring training.
  14. Paul Secor, from pitching duel to slugfest! I was watching on my phone in happy disbelief last night as NY kept hitting one dramatic home run after another... Fantastic win! Good to see Didi back in the lineup as well. Outside of Gary Sanchez's injury and Greg Bird's struggles, this has been an amazing April.
  15. Up a bit early in honor of Ellington's birthday today, here's this week's Night Lights show, featuring music from The New Orleans Suite, the second and third sacred concerts, the Goutelas and Latin American Suites, the Afro-Eurasian Eclipse, and more, as well as commentary from Michael McGerr and numerous musical outtakes at the bottom of the post: Ellington Ending: Duke Ellington 1967-73
  16. Preparing to pull out the Ahmad Jamal for another tour.
  17. Yes, that was a pitching duel for the ages, as they say. Fantastic to win one against Sale at Fenway!
  18. Great start from Severino last night against the Red Sox--he really seems to have found his confidence so far this season. Wouldn't be surprised if Chris Sale takes the Yanks to town tonight, though... curious to see how Tanaka fares. He's had a really rough spring to date.
  19. Seems to me the future (which is already here to a large extent) will be people streaming subscription services on their phones for the sports and teams they prefer.
  20. ESPN lays off numerous reporters and on-air personalities
