Everything posted by ghost of miles

  1. Listening to a lot of the mid-to-late 1960s recordings right now--live Free Spirits, Gary Burton, Chico Hamilton. I've had Spaces on my to-get list for the last couple of years and need to pick that up ASAP. Some good material on Coryell's early years in the book Jazz Rock.
  2. He reportedly passed away after a concert last night.
  3. Zev Feldman just announced another forthcoming Bill Evans release--a concert recorded just a couple of days after the 1968 Black Forest sessions with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette: Bill Evans: Another Time
  4. We re-aired The Vee-Jay Jazz Story last week and it remains archived for online listening.
  5. Has saxophonist David Young's Mainstream LP ever been reissued on CD in Japan?
  6. I just did a one-hour phone interview with Bob Porter for an upcoming Night Lights show and let him know about this thread, so he may be stopping by to give it a read. So great to talk with him about the book!
  7. We re-aired Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: Class Of '57 this past week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  8. Are there any recordings of Ornette Coleman's 1959 stand at the Five Spot that have ever circulated? Feel free to respond via PM if you'd prefer.
  9. Last week's Night Lights program, drawn from the new Mosaic Records set Classic Savoy Be-bop Sessions 1945-49 (with a couple of Charlie Parker sides included for the sake of historical comprehensiveness) is now up for online listening: Boppin' On Savoy: Bebop And Savoy Records In The Late 1940s
  10. Up for Roy Eldridge's birthday: Portrait Of Little Jazz:  A Tribute To Roy Eldridge
  11. Going to see the Fred Hersch Trio at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis on February 11.
  12. We rebroadcast At The Jazz Corner Of The World: Live From Birdland last week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  13. Thanks, I'll definitely be checking this out!
  14. Brent is indeed a class act! I just moderated a panel discussion yesterday in which he and a number of other musicians and scholars talked about David's life and legacy. We had a fantastic concert of David's music in the evening as well. Full disclosure: I wrote the liner notes for the new CD Basically Baker 2, as well as the newly-reissued version of Basically Baker 1.
  15. Some programs, including Dear Martin: Jazz Tributes To Martin Luther King Jr. and We Shall Overcome: Civil-Rights Jazz, as well as articles, interviews, and shows about Duke Ellington: Night Lights For MLK Day: Jazz And More
  16. Nice CD, just featured it this past Monday on Just You And Me.
  17. Nat Hentoff's son Nick has posted via Twitter that his father has passed away at the age of 91.
  18. The Blue Lake show that Lazaro posted about at the top of the thread. Here's a Night Lights show that covers the 1945-47 era: On A Turquoise Cloud: Duke Ellington After The War, 1945-1947
  19. Me too! Just started revisiting this today for the first time in years.
  20. Some shows from the archives to help pave today's way to 2017: Jazz For Mad Men: Hits From The 1960s Hipsters, Flipsters, And On-The-Scenesters The New Year's Eve Jam Swingers: Hugh Hefner, Playboy Magazine, And Jazz ...and step out to a couple of nightclubs while you're at it: Cafe Society: The Wrong Place For The Right People At The Jazz Corner Of The World: Live From Birdland Jazz From Storyville Happy 2017 and all that jazz.
  21. Here's the annual Night Lights program highlighting some of my favorite historical releases and reissues from the year that's concluding. The program post includes an expanded list of titles, not all of which were able to fit into the show. I'd love to see your choices--I'm sure I omitted some that I either didn't know about or left out for other reasons: Best Historical Releases 2016
  22. Mine came about an hour ago--listening to disc 1 right now. Very good notes by Roger Boyes.
  23. Hep did a nice series of Goodman CDs grouped by arranger, with two volumes devoted to Henderson's charts for the band. Thanks as always for this nuanced appreciation, Jim.
