  1. Gary Sanchez has unsurprisingly cooled off at the plate, but man, the arm on this guy! Here he is throwing out Upton Jr. in today's win over the Jays: Sanchez throws out Upton Jr.
  2. Agreed. I was listening on my cellphone through GameDay Audio (bargain of the century at $2.99 a month) while working on projects at home and couldn't believe that they pulled both of those out. A pleasant surprise that we're in any kind of hunt for the wild-card at all.
  3. Paul Secor, two epic wins in KC the last couple of nights... We've been so bad after rain delays, was glad to see NY ultimately pull that one out. And last night's game--battle of the depleted bullpens. Only 2.5 games off the second WC spot, who'da thunk it?
  4. Evidently there's been a deal to publish this book. Don't know any details about when or by whom, but hopefully we'll see it in the next year or so.
  5. "Abby someone"
  6. Up for Bird's birthday: Big Band Bird: Charlie Parker With The Big Bands
  7. Sanchez fastest in MLB history to hit 11 HRs He also threw out another runner attempting to steal today... Cue Roy Hobbs comparisons.
  8. Just came across a few Barron LPs in the WFIU library--have to admit that I haven't listened to him before. We're in the midst of a major move at the station, so I'm going to bring those LPs home for a few days and check them out over Labor Day weekend. It may have been mentioned already, but I'd love a 1960s Gary Burton RCA set, though most of that material has made it to CD in one way or another. Evidently, though, it's not in the picture, for a reason that doesn't stem from lack of desire on Mosaic's (or Burton's part).
  9. Thanks for posting that... Brookmeyer does seem like an unsung influence on a number of younger bandleaders today.
  10. Sanchez-fueled Yanks penning thrilling script Paul, let's hope that he doesn't come back down to earth for another 15 years!
  11. Yes, once he's been around the league and opposing teams have had a chance to exploit any vulnerabilities he shows at the plate, his stats will undoubtedly come back down to earth... but I'm enjoying the ride for now. His BA/OBP/SA after 19 games is .389/.450/.847...and he's thrown out five of eight runners attempting to steal (and two of the successful swipes came with Betances on the mound, whose delivery makes him notoriously easy to steal on). I think this guy will prove to be a keeper.
  12. Paul Secor, I have just three words for you: Gary Freakin' Sanchez. ? Three weeks into his rookie year, and the Mariners intentionally walked him twice today. Not to mention that his arm is inspiring comparisons to Pudge Rodriguez, and he seems to be jelling with the starting pitchers as well. I still think a wildcard slot is a distant dream, but the last two months of this season are proving to be a lot more fun to watch than the first four were.
  13. Definitely! Always open to suggestions for additions to any of the bibliographies that I've compiled so far.
  14. We re-aired this show this past week, and it remains archived for online listening: The Great Columbia Jazz Purge: Coleman, Evans, Jarrett And Mingus
  15. Thanks for all of the suggestions--up with additions, as we say in the "Offering and Looking For" forum: Songs Of Themselves: Jazz Autobiographies Added and purchased!
  16. Thanks for mention of this, fasstrack... I added it to the list.
  17. Thanks much--all of these suggestions have been added, save for the Konitz, which is an amazing book but may or may not qualify as an autobiography (Larry Kart, if you see these posts, what do you think?).
  18. Thanks for the heads-up, Dan--I'll definitely check that out.
  19. I've put together a new bibliography for the Night Lights blog--this one covering jazz autobiographies. Heads-ups for the inevitable oversights, omissions, etc welcome as always: Songs Of Themselves: Jazz Autobiographies
  20. Some folks here in Indiana do the same for IU basketball with radio announcer Don Fischer. Here's his call of IU's 2011 win over #1 Kentucky--a moment that signaled that the program was once again a contender: Don Fischer's call of IU buzzer-beater victory over Kentucky at Assembly Hall, Dec 2011
  21. Tried to upload the photo, but even after resizing it to 19 KB, I keep getting the message that I'm allowed to upload only 102 KB. I'll try again later.
  22. Jsngry, I've experienced this very same sensation over the past couple of years! I sometimes walk to work holding my phone up to listen to music and definitely feel the old-school transistor vibe. Last year I asked my dad if I could have one of our old transistor radios and sometimes listen to Cincinnati Reds games on it... will post a photo momentarily. I loved transistor radios, listening to sports on them as well as music.
  23. Last week's Night Lights show, focusing on Waldron's late 1950s and early 60s music, up for online listening: Soul Eyes: The Early Mal Waldron Songbook
  24. Up, sadly... RIP, Bobby. Later: Bobby Hutcherson In The Mid-1970s
