MLB 2016 Season Thread Of Discussions
ghost of miles replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, too much of a pipe-dream that this particular Yankees team could make a run at the playoffs, given the inconsistency of both the starting pitching and the bullpen, and the rash of injuries that have now occurred (Eovaldi, Hicks, Judge, Castro). I'm focusing for now on continuing to watch and enjoy Gary Sanchez's development, and hoping that the groundwork is being laid for a competitive team in the next two years. I sure hope that Clint Frazier ends up justifying the trade of Andrew Miller, who sure could have come in handy this past couple of weeks (Betances cannot pitch three nights in a row, and IMO works better as a setup man than a 9th-inning closer). I suppose NY can try to lay out a bunch of cash for Chapman this winter, but it would have been far more economical to hold on to Miller for two more seasons. -
"Jazz From Monterey: 1958, Birth of a Festival"
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Up for the start of the 59th annual MJF tomorrow: Jazz From Monterey, 1958: Birth Of A Festival ...and a sequel (with hopefully another one or two to come in the future): Jazz From Monterey: 1966 -
Teaching certainly holds a pretty honored place here at IU, given how much David Baker did to build up the jazz education program. Lots of love for teaching and teachers in Bloomington--hell, we voted to raise our taxes a few years ago to help out the arts programs in the local elementary and high schools, and are likely to do the same again this autumn! On a related topic, I'd still love to read a book about all of the incredible teachers in the 1930s/40s/50s African-American school system who played such a big role in developing the musical talent of those generations.

I think he just meant that Hank was really old, old hat and something that urban-hipster types were far more likely to listen to than modern-day country music fans (this was circa 1995 or so). I didn't really care one way or another, just knew that I'd discovered that I liked Hank Williams.

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Bear Family box sets I've picked up a few over the years to be sure, including the Louis Jordan, both Nat King Coles, and the "Shot In The Dark" sets (Nashville Jumps and Tennessee Jive). Just recently the Johnny Cash Come Along And Ride This Train set, though I haven't gotten around to listening to it yet.- 153 replies

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Once upon a time they did... not sure how many new big boxes they're doing these days, though. Like Mosaic, I think they've taken a hit from several different directions, including cheap bootlegged ripoffs of sets they've produced.- 153 replies

I remember a long time ago mentioning to a country-music-listening friend of mine that I had gotten into Hank Williams, and he said, rather disdainfully, "That's the country city folk listen to."

The Rays try to intentionally walk Gary Sanchez with runners at second and third and no outs, and he damn near hits it out of the park: Sanchez sacrifice fly ... Resulting in a run scored and Ellsbury moving to third, then scoring on Gregorius's sacrifice fly. -

That game was destined to end with a solo home run. -
Longevity of the Hank Mobley Mosaic.
ghost of miles replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've been listening to this set yet again of late... seem to pull it out every couple of years, and glad to see that it's still around for those who want to dive deep into Mobley's 1950s work. -
Agreed... I got it through an Amazon UK seller about a month ago and have listened to it several times... still not quite ready to file it away yet!

Any idea how much he was using his change up last night, Paul? I saw it pop up in at least one pitch sequence, but I was following the game only haphazardly while he was on the mound. Oh and btw Red Sox are now in first place with their win last night and our defeat of Toronto... You're welcome, Dan Gould. -
AOTW Sept. 4-11, 2016: The Complete Wolverines

Retrieval did a pretty decent-sounding NORK set back in 2001, which appears to still be available: New Orleans Rhythm Kings 1922-1925 ...but I would have loved to have heard what Off The Record would have done with that material. Too bad that they're apparently no longer in operation. -

It's been an unexpectedly pleasant twist to the last two months of the season for sure. I thought I'd simply enjoy watching Sanchez, Judge, Austin and all the other young players starting to break in...and lo and behold, we're seven games over .500 for the first time all season! Here's Gardner's game-winning catch last night with the bases loaded and two outs, Yankees up by only a run--the slow-mo shows how close the ball came to popping back out of his glove as he hit the wall: Gardner robs Smoak to clinch victory -
Some birthday love from the Night Lights archives: Crossing The Bridge: The Return Of Sonny Rollins Rollins '57: Sonny Rollins Takes The Lead Sonny Rollins: Live In London (with quote from Jsngry!) I've only seen Sonny in concert once--1999, at the Madame Walker Theater in Indianapolis, and it was amazing. A true jazz giant.

It's the American League Wild, Wild East, for sure. Tigers, Astros and the Royals all still in the WC hunt as well. In the NL the WC race is coming down to the Giants, Cardinals, and Mets: MLB wildcard standings -

Gary Sanchez has unsurprisingly cooled off at the plate, but man, the arm on this guy! Here he is throwing out Upton Jr. in today's win over the Jays: Sanchez throws out Upton Jr. -

Agreed. I was listening on my cellphone through GameDay Audio (bargain of the century at $2.99 a month) while working on projects at home and couldn't believe that they pulled both of those out. A pleasant surprise that we're in any kind of hunt for the wild-card at all.
