  1. Here's another one from MAD MEN's season 1 (episode 13, the season finale): The Carousel ...some context: the man who gets up and walks out at the end has been exiled from his home by his wife after having a one-night stand with a secretary. And part of what makes the scene so moving is the dissonance between the genuine beauty Don finds in his slideshow vision of his family and the messy, screwed-up, complex reality of his situation. It's a very Fitzgerald/Gatsby kind of note that Matthew Weiner strikes (and I think GATSBY is one of the touchstones for the series in general).
  2. Found myself thinking again this morning about the fifth episode of MAD MEN's Season 1--"5G," the show in which Don Draper's brother finds him. I was in a daze after watching it for the first time... it hit me quite hard. (For anybody who's a fan of the show, the director's commentary on this particular episode is very good.) Just curious to hear what particular episodes of TV shows have stayed or lingered with other posters here.
  3. Thanks, Marcel, I'll check this out--I like the roll call of piano players, too (Dodo, Arnold Ross, and Jimmy Rowles).
  4. But you could easily say the same thing regarding the slew of injuries that have hit the Bosox and yet they're only 1 game behind NY. Sure, Tex is having a very bad year, though his power/RBI production isn't down quite as much as his BA...and we've had a few injury situations ourselves, but nothing to really rival what you're going through. (And I was definitely being sarcastic about Nick Johnson--outside of the Human Walk Machine factor, his contribution to the offense was negligible. So I don't see his being on the DL as any great loss, especially since it allows us to put Cervelli behind the plate and Posada at DH.) A-Rod and Jeter are certainly having subpar years by their standards, and at their ages it's no guarantee that they'll have a huge improvement in the second half...but again, I don't think any potential gains from improved performances by them will be as significant as the Bosox getting Ellsbury, Beckett et al back again. OTOH, Dave Eiland thinks he may have already figured out the source of A.J.'s woes. We'll see--I sure hope so, since Phil Hughes does indeed seem to be declining as the season goes on. Unrelated, but kind of cool--the New York Times video breaking down Mo's cutter.
  5. Well, Dan, you should at least take solace from how pitiful the Yanks have looked the last two nights at home against the Mariners. Scoring 4 runs off Lee wasn't even as decent as it sounds, given that two of them came in the bottom of the 9th, and the other two were Nick Swisher solo homers...and as excellent as Felix Hernandez is, it's still a pretty miserable performance to nick only two hits off him over 9 innings. What's more troubling, though, is the pitching. Surrendering all of those runs to one of the lightest-hitting batting orders in the AL is not a good sign. Last year NY had an incredible post-All Star Game run. This year I'd say it's your team that's better-positioned to make such a run, once everybody's back from the DL. NY? We're only awaiting Nick Johnson's return. *Well, OK, it would help to get Aceves back... NY has its own bullpen implosion problems. Park is terrible after 1 IP and every 8th-inning appearance from Joba is fraught with drama--and I don't mean that in a good way. Robertson seems to be slowly regaining his 2009 form, so I guess that's a small ray of hope. And sure, Mo is still a very reliable closer--it's just that the bridge to him looks a bit like this: The bridge to Mo
  6. Great news--can't wait for the holidays! Tranemonk, one set I can think of right away that is most likely replicated by the forthcoming Mosaic is the old 2-CD BRAGGIN' IN BRASS collection. Even then, I'd hold onto everything until you actually have the Mosaic in hand and can compare. (I sometimes hold onto my old single or double-disc compilations anyway, especially if they have decent liner notes... but I do end up trading in some for credit at the local record store or else give them away to friends.)
  7. Moms, I've read it and am working on a review for the Night Lights blog (hopefully up this weekend). Agree avidly w/your concluding points re: lack of a great Duke bio and that this book stands now as one of the better ones out there. (In addition to EARLY ELLLINGTON, the ELLINGTON READER that Tucker edited is also an excellent compendium for Ducal fans.) I'll post a link to my review after I've posted it.
  8. Really interesting, MWGA--I like the description of Yates' REVOLUTIONARY ROAD as "the underbelly of Rob and Laura Petrie land." Many thanks for posting.
  9. Friends! Countrymen! Fellow Organissimo posters! We have just a short distance to go to meet the Night Lights online fund-drive goal, but only several days in which to do so...any and all contributions will help. If you have already given, a truly profound thanks. Contributions can be made here: Support Night Lights In the meantime, here's a fund-drive show to raise your spirits: Good Vibes ...featuring Milt Jackson, Lem Winchester, Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Bobby Hutcherson, and Roy Ayers. On tap for later this week: "It's All in the Game: Louis Armstrong, 1947-1957" with special guests Dan Morgenstern and Michael McGerr.
  10. Wow--amazing, stunning comeback by the Yankees tonight, down 4 runs in the top of the 9th...they come back to tie it, then Cano hits a two-run homer in the top of the 10th and Mo notches two shutout innings for the win. Game of the season and one of the first times they've really looked like a potential repeat champion to me. EDIT: glad NY won tonight, too, because Cliff Lee is on tap for the Mariners come Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Also glad that the whole overhyped Torre vs. A-Rod drama had a nice resolution: A-Rod and Torre chat ...another report said Torre playfully put up his fists when Alex approached him.
  11. Saw this one on a runner today at Landlocked Music in Bloomington and am heading back tomorrow to buy--any thoughts? It sounds/looks very promising--here's the AMG review: Jazz Raga
  12. Two that I bought when I was first getting into jazz and working in a record store: Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT and Herbie Nichols' LOVE, GLOOM, CASH, LOVE.
  13. Dan, any updates on Vic Martinez? I read some reports in the last hour that he might be out for several weeks...if true, sheesh, you guys are really getting slammed with the injuries. Great start again by Lester today. EDIT: Over the Monster says fractured left thumb, but that he may not have to go on the DL.
  14. Yeah, Jeet is sure not having a contract year to date (as Dan pointed out earlier). The Yanks announced today that Dave Eiland's coming back this week. Hopefully he can help AJ straighten himself out... given that Aceves isn't back yet and they're trying to limit Hughes' innings, skipping AJ a start (a la Javy earlier this year) doesn't seem to be a viable option right now. He goes against the Jays Friday night, and he's been better at home than on the road, so maybe that will be the game where he finally starts to turn it around.
  15. Yankees in June: 15-8. Yankees in June when AJ's not starting: 15-3 Yankees in June when AJ's starting: 0-5
  16. The line on A.J. through 3 innings so far in L.A. tonight: 5 hits, 5 walks, 5 ER given up, pitch count already at 73. He's making early-season Javy look like an ace! EDIT: Girardi let A.J. bat in the top of the 4th with runners at 1st and 3rd and 1 out, then yanked him after giving up two singles to start the bottom of the 4th. Given how awful A.J. had been tonight, esp. in the 3rd, I sure would have been tempted to pinch-hit for him in that situation.
  17. Latest on Cliff Lee trade rumors: M's may trade Cliff Lee soon The article IDs the Mets, Dodgers and Rangers as all having made inquiries to the Mariners about Lee.
  18. We're re-airing this show this week, but it's already archived for online listening: The Benny Golson Songbook
  19. Thanks--I knew I was living on the edge! Many thanks for the help on this one--I've got it covered now and will ask the moderators to delete the thread.
  20. Nice close win by the Yanks tonight--CC pitched very well, A-Rod hit the go-ahead homer, and Mo struck out the side in the 9th for the save. Glad to see NY take the first game, as A.J. is on the mound tomorrow.
  21. If anybody has a copy of the Limelight album "Charlie Parker 10th Anniversary Memorial Concert" (Limelight 86017)--especially the Japanese CD, which includes two bonus tracks featuring Dizzy Gillespie and James Moody--could he or she contact me off the board? I'm hoping to use some music from it as part of an upcoming Night Lights show. Many thanks!
  22. According to one of the news stories I just read, A.J. Burnett holds the record for most walks surrendered while pitching a no-hitter--9. So it's not even the All-Star break yet and we've already had 4 MLB no-hitters. (And would've had 5 if Jim Joyce hadn't blown the call in the Detroit game.) Is that a record for a single season? EDIT: NY Times says the record for most no-hitters in an MBL season is 7, set in 1990 and tied in 1991.
  23. Wild win for your team, Dan! Another one I had to sign off on without knowing the conclusion--when I went to bed, Boston was up by 2 and Colorado was threatening in the bottom of the 9th. In the NY corner, lots of media drama this weekend with the matchup against Joe Torre's Dodgers. Hughes is being skipped, so CC will be on the mound tonight...I'm just hoping we can take 2 of 3.
  24. Man oh man--the White Sox and Rangers both staying in the victory fast lane tonight.
  25. Very, very sorry to hear this. He gave a lot, for a long time, and jazz lovers from Chicago to all over the world have much for which to thank him.
