  1. Off on a Friday night? You didn't notice any of the "Manny returns to Fenway" stories? That's weird--there was no line for Boston in the box-scores on Yahoo last night when I checked. EDIT: man, that's really weird. My computer was clipping off about half of the Yahoo scoreboard games last night, including Bosox-Dodgers. I was at work (had to come in and do some programming on the fly, as we had a whole hour-long file go missing) and wasn't able to do the usual tracking via GameDay.
  2. Up again for the holiday: The Juneteenth Jazz Jamboree
  3. Even sooner if we revive the "Stupid Questions" thread!
  4. Well, let's see--another night of June baseball and...another fine effort by a Yankee starter gone to waste, another pitiful showing from the Yankee bats, another sad NY bullpen performance that makes a close game not so close, and...another loss to a team with a better-than-.500 record! Tampa Bay lost too, so Boston (off tonight) is now 1.5 games back of both teams.
  5. Well, in a few more minutes here (assuming the Yankee bullpen ever gets out of the top of the 9th), Boston will be only two games behind Tampa Bay and New York--New York being on the verge of yet again dropping a series to a team with a better-than-.500 record. Andy Pettitte turned in another very good performance tonight that will go to waste courtesy of an anemic offense (what's the deal, anyway? We knocked Halladay around, then got dominated by two much-lesser pitchers), topped off by another disastrous Joba sighting (no outs, three runs allowed) in the top of the 9th that's made any chance of a NY comeback remote at best.
  6. FakeMoyerFacts ...such as "Jamie Moyer cried during Lou Gehrig's farewell speech, then resumed his bullpen session."
  7. He schooled us. (I wonder if NY was feeling a bit cocky after having knocked Halladay around last night.) We mounted a bit of a comeback against Lidge in the bottom of the 9th--enough to get Jorge up to the plate as the tying run, but he struck out swinging to end it. Hey Berigan, thanks to your Braves for beating Tampa Bay tonight, enabling NY to stay tied with them for 1st. Man, you can hardly afford to drop a single game if you want to contend for the AL East! And now Boston's only three games back of them both.
  8. Looks like Philadelphia picked tonight to finally fire up their bats again. And outside of solo HRs by Cano and Posada, Moyer has completely handcuffed the Yankee hitters.
  9. A bizarre home/away negative image right now for the Yanks and Rays, who remain tied atop the AL East after last night's games. The Yankees are 23-7 at home and 18-16 on the road. The Rays are 18-15 at home and 23-8 on the road.
  10. Jonathan Lethem, THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE.
  11. Man--crazy game in the Bronx tonight. The Yankees, who've generally been owned by Halladay his whole career, have roughed him up for five runs in three innings so far. But CC, who pitched really well the first three innings, has now given up three runs in the fourth, with runners at first and third now and only one out, putting Philadelphia right back in the game.
  12. A tribute to father-and-son jazz formations this week on Night Lights, in honor of the upcoming Father's Day holiday: Daddy-O!  Father-and-Son Teams in Jazz Plenty of material left over for a sequel next year...and special thanks (as noted at the bottom of the program page and at the end of the program itself) to board members Chuck Nessa and rostasi.
  13. I'll be posting this in the Jazz Radio forum later today, but here's this week's Night Lights show: Daddy-O! Father-and-Son Teams in Jazz
  14. NY Times review: Undead JazzFest
  15. 5.7 earthquake last night during the San Diego-Toronto game: Play stops briefly for earthquake
  16. Baseball and Cubs fans in particular are highly advised to tune into ESPN right now.
  17. Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch doing Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately": Rawlings-Welch "Queen Jane Approximately"
  18. I'd guess that's the coming wave, given the ongoing deletion of the physical RVGs, coupled with BN's knowledge (I'd hazard to say) that people into buying Blue Note titles are generally going to want the liner notes as well.
  19. Thanks for posting this, Larry--I didn't know Keefe Jackson had a new one out, and, as you know, I'm a fan.
  20. We're re-airing Live At Cafe Bohemia this week; it's already archived for online listening. Next week: "Daddy-O! Father-and-Son Teams in Jazz." Also, the Night Lights annual online fund-drive continues. I'll be posting two special fund-drive programs, "Good Vibes" and "The Prestige Records Story," in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to those who who have given to the drive; please consider making a contribution if you haven't already done so! Even just a few bucks helps us out.
