  1. John, I came across that review from '68 while working on a Night Lights show. Don DeMichael also wrote an extensive profile of Shaw for Downbeat in 1964.
  2. Finishing this show up and will be doing a sequel, probably for broadcast this summer.
  3. They were scheduled to do a residency here in Bloomington, starting today and lasting through Wednesday--it's off now, though, due to the contract dispute.
  4. You should not say things like this, I have been fighting off the temptation of buying this for over a month. I've been fighting off the temptation ever since it first came out!
  5. Got a little extra bit of money and finally took the plunge on this.
  6. Well, it's cool if WBGO is sponsoring or otherwise helping to put on the show--hope they archive it on their site. Stevebop was involved with a musical reprise of the "Connection" music a year ago or so that paired Redd with Lou Donaldson.
  7. Now SI reports that Detroit is counting on Austin Jackson (Yankee prospect they acquired via trade) to play and that they won't be signing any more outfielders--seems to put the kibosh on any chance of Damon going to Detroit.
  8. On a real late-period (1935-1940) F. Scott Fitzgerald kick right now:
  9. No broadcast? I didn't see it mentioned on the WBGO site, anyway...
  10. True story: Dan had designed a t-shirt with a "Yankees Suck" logo after the World Series, but then it was taken down by the website because it felt having the Yankee logo on it was a copyright infringement. I really wanted to buy two and get one as a Christmas gift for you David. Darn... I could've "re-gifted" it to my younger brother! BTW, Johnny Damon to Detroit? Sports Illustrated says it's a possibility.
  11. Report: Yankees reaping huge financial gains from trademarking of "Yankees suck" phrase
  12. If anybody has this out-of-print album--preferably in mp3 form--could he or she contact me via PM or e-mail? I'm looking for it for possible use on an upcoming Night Lights show. Thanks much!
  13. Larry Appelbaum is reporting on the Jazz Programmer Listserv that drummer Ed Thigpen has passed away. Ed Thigpen
  14. Statement on the White House site with a link to the Red Cross donation site. Here's a link to Doctors Without Borders as well.
  15. Or at least its capital, Port-Au-Prince; that's almost the sense I'm getting reading and viewing the news coming out of there. My God... MSNBC just now reporting that all three Doctors Without Borders hospitals have collapsed.
  16. MLB slaps Florida Marlins over use of revenue-sharing funds.
  17. The most enjoyable Miles book of the several I've read. Szwed's one a hell of a good writer (IMHO). Have you read his Sun Ra biography? That one was immensely helpful to me when I was putting together the "Second Magic City" show about Sun Ra's Chicago years.
  18. Not the quote you're looking for, but in the neighborhood--in his followup article in Creem, Bangs wrote the following: The Greatest Album Ever Made (Creem, 1976)
  19. Sorry to hear about that, Brownie. Somewhat related, a friend of mine commented on his Facebook page yesterday that one of the XM jazz stations has been playing the exact same playlist, day after day. Nice! How jazzy...
  20. I'd like to read Szwed's Miles bio myself--thanks for reminding me of it.
  21. A quick list I put together yesterday: Favorite jazz books of 2009 I focused only on books that came out last year, but would enjoy hearing simply what some of your favorite reads were last year, regardless of when they were actually published.
  22. I think his Gershwin album just got reissued for a reasonable price. If you can find the 1950s SKYLARK, that's a good one as well. Here's an ancient Night Lights show I devoted to Paris (the second one I ever taped, so apologies for raw/semi-pro delivery and/or narrative flow). Paris had just passed away not long before I recorded it: Charlie Parker's Favorite Singer: Jackie Paris
  23. Not even that indeed. Cashman offered him a 2-year, $14 million dollar deal a couple of weeks ago...he and Boras came back with 2 years and 20 million and Cashman said forget it, we're signing Nick Johnson. Rumor now is that Cashman wouldn't be willing to offer more than 1 year and 6 million. Some talk that the Braves might have some interest, but I have to think that JD is kicking himself for turning down Cashman's original offer; I can't really see anybody else offering him that much. Plus, Damon's game is tailor made for the new Yankee Stadium. Yeah, Boras didn't do either Damon or Beltre any favors this off season. Speculation continues to percolate that Damon will return to the Yanks, but that's all it is at this point--speculation. A reporter talked with Damon a couple of days ago, and it sounds like Damon still wants 10 million a year. No way IMO that NY brings him back at that level, even for a 1-year deal, and no way that anybody else will give him that kind of money.
  24. The Vitous and Kuhn are two faves of mine that easily could have made my list. Haven't heard the most recent Potter, but I'll seek it out, as well as that Grant Stewart.
  25. Here's my late-breaking list.
