  1. Dave--are you saying Toronto wants all four players?
  2. Or Larry Kart's JAZZ IN SEARCH OF ITSELF!
  3. TMM, so great to see you posting again--sounds like things are going well for you. I need to pick up a few more VSOPs myself (hey, you really think you're going to get any stern rebukes around this joint? )
  4. Does salary arbitration commit the Yankees to anything? Sounds like it does--this is from an article about arbitration from last year's offseason: ...and Pettitte did end up returning for this season. Sounds like NY would rather risk losing the draft pick compensation than locking themselves into some sort of one-year deal with Matsui, Damon, or Pettitte.
  5. Posted elsewhere on the board, but I'll place it here as well for Clare Fischer fans or those who are interested in his music: Extension: Clare Fischer in the 1960s
  6. He does seem to go a bit under the radar. Many thanks to Daniel A. and Felser for their assistance with this show, btw.
  7. This week's Night Lights show up for online listening--an overview of Clare Fischer's big-band and small-group recordings and arrangements from the 1960s: Extension: Clare Fischer in the 1960s ...program page includes two video clips of Clare and Bud Shank performing together in the early 1960s. Next week: "It's Jazz, Charlie Brown: the Vince Guaraldi Story."
  8. It's not showing up yet at World Records or Allegro--hopefully soon, though.
  9. Thank you, thank you! I was just looking at my DETS cds the other day & wondering about the next volume. Is this available online anywhere yet besides Storyville?
  10. Wow--he's now turned the police away yet again.
  11. Tiger should really put out some kind of statement, because right now TMZ is telling the whole story for him--and I can't imagine that he's very comfortable with their version.
  12. I used Helen Forrest's live recording of it with the Harry James big band (from that Hindsight box of James broadcasts). Also used "Skylark" to end the upcoming Bob Brookmeyer Night Lights program (should air on Blue Lake the night after his 80th birthday).
  13. I love SUMMER OF '49--not sure I still have my old mass-market paperback, may have lost it in the course of a move a few years ago. OCTOBER 1964 evidently delves into the epic Yankees-Cardinals WS that year and ties it into the larger societal changes that were going on...chronicling the last year of the 40-year Yankee dynasty and the rise of the Cards, who had several good, young African-American players (Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Curt Flood). Here's the Amazon write-up: Good reading in advance of the next MAD MEN season too, since (unless Weiner's executing another two-year leap) should cover 1964. I've long wanted to read that book about the '96 Yanks--but this year's team, which was so magical in its own right, has finally inspired me to get it.
  14. I've got all 8 of the Hep Thornhill volumes--they were invaluable in putting together the Night Lights Thornhill show. Hard to imagine any other label (outside of Chronological Classics, which for some reason never got around to CT) devoting that many CDs to the man from Terre Haute.
  15. According to this NY Daily News article, the Yankees are more likely to bring Johnny Damon back than they are Matsui.
  16. Loved those, thanks for posting 'em, Matthew.
  17. Dave, hot-stove reading on the way for me--I think you'll approve:
  18. How cool is this? Strat-O-Mat Baseball now has a Negro League edition. I was a Strat-O-Mat fanatic when I was a kid--back in the pre-computer-version days, playing with the paper cards and dice (the board game is still available, it appears).
  19. Better moments for Tiger: Tiger Woods: 10 greatest shots of the decade
  20. Amen to that--an incredible label. I pretty much buy anything Alastair puts out. One recommendation would be any of the post-1945 Claude Thornhill titles.
  21. Well, evidently that initial report might have been a little dramatic re: "seriously injured," as he's just been released from the hospital. But pulling out of his driveway at 2:25 in the morning, hits a fire hydrant and then drives into a tree on his neighbor's property, and it's "not alcohol-related?" Damn, maybe it isn't, and big deal if it is, but I'd hate to think one of the world's greatest athletes would drive that badly sober. Whatever state he was in, good thing for him and anybody else on the road that he didn't ultimately make it out of the driveway, eh?
  22. Would still love to see a Mulligan Mercury sextet Select box from Mosaic--although European releases of this material might make it less viable these days.
  23. What's up with this? Tiger Woods seriously hurt in crash ...pulling out of his driveway?
  24. Yes--John Sinclair does talk about seeing this concert in the Brilliant Corners interview, collected in Sascha Feinstein's ASK ME NOW anthology. Iirc their (Monk/Coltrane) reunion came about because of somebody getting snowed in, but I don't have the book with me right now--will check when I get to work. I believe it's also discussed in the new edition of the Coltrane reference book. Wait a sec--yes, it's discussed in Kelley's new Monk bio as well (which I do have at hand, sitting on my desk here at home). Bad weather prevented many of the artists Wein had booked from arriving for the concert, with the exception of Monk's group, Sarah Vaughan, and John Coltrane sans quintet (but w/Alice). I think he's quoting Wein's recent memoir: If anybody does have that new edition of the Coltrane reference book, it might say whether or not there's any known audio of this concert.
  25. Wow--didn't know they would do that. (I know they sell leftover booklets, but I'm pretty sure they don't have any of the Nichols booklet.) What I'm mostly interested in is Roswell Rudd's essay/notes. I'll give 'em a call tomorrow or Monday--thanks, Brad.
