  1. Oh man, Lon, thanks so much for reminding me of this one… just pulled it off the shelf to spin after this one finishes up:
  2. Jacob deGrom is bound for Tommy John surgery and done for 2023.
  3. Swingin’ and swayin’ with Harry James on the eve of the D-Day anniversary:
  4. Paging Mark Stryker—remember the Detroit jazz tribute in NYC where we ascertained that the venue, (Le) Poisson Rouge, was the former site of the Village Gate? Really excited to hear this. I’ve continued to hope that the early-1960s Showboat recordings will surface in some official-release form, but a new Coltrane-Dolphy performance will more than suffice for now.
  5. Just saw Nate Chinen’s email about this. Holy moly!
  6. Famously for a price of 99p, is that correct?
  7. A striking start! Speaking of striking starts, the Rangers are now exactly 1/3 of the way through the season and currently sit atop the AL West, three games in front of the Astros. What’s the outlook from Plano for the rest of 2023?
  8. Excellent, greatly-expanded reissue of a classic early-80s English indie pop compilation:
  9. 29 when I purchased my first set, the Andrew Hill 1963-66 Blue Note box.
  10. Thanks for the heads-up on this... just pre-ordered through my local record store.
  11. My very first Smiths album, purchased as an import in late autumn 1984. God I love that record! Right now, another album I love, by another Smith:
  12. It was serviceable. Not sure what other books on Hawk are out there, though iirc he features in Scott DeVeaux’s The Birth of Bebop. Loren Schoenberg’s booklet for the Mosaic Hawkins is an excellent read and is actually what sparked my interest in getting around to reading Chilton’s bio.
  13. This one goes out to the original Gene Harris Fanatic. 😉
  14. Seemed medium-sized, maybe a bit on the small-ish side, but a great park overall. No HRs from Judge, but he did go 4-4 including the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th, followed by a Rizzo HR. Fantastic game experience all around, and afterwards my girlfriend and I took a long walk along the riverfront across the street from the stadium.
  15. Heading over to Cincinnati for Reds-Yankees this afternoon at Great American Ballpark. Forecast for game time is sunny and 70 degrees.
  16. Does anybody know what happened to Claude Dangerfield, who began doing artwork for Sun Ra as a teenager in the 1950s? John Szwed’s excellent Sun Ra bio doesn’t list Dangerfield in the index, while the Fantagraphics book mentions him several times, but only (as far as I can tell) in the context of the late 1950s/early 60s. I really like the covers he did, used and unused, for Saturn. You were quite correct, sir!
  17. Just finished: Just starting: … and still perusing with great pleasure:
  18. My copy’s out for delivery—really looking forward to it. I’ve been delving into the Mosaic Threadgill in anticipation and have the Black Saint and Soul note set out as well.
