Thanks, Mark. I was looking on your super-swanky home gallery that AB helped set up... I'll forward the AAJ link to my station-manager buddy at WFHB -

Mark, I don't see them on the gallery page--can you post a link to where they're posted? -
Woke up in the middle of the night last night and enjoyed a good chunk of THE ESSENTIAL MERTON:

Wigwise, I'll be doing a Night Lights program on Grimes that will air in early or mid-December--it will use excerpts from the one-on-one interview that I did with him, and it will be archived on the Night Lights website. -
"Moodsville 1" on Night Lights tonight
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
"Moodsville 1" is now archived. "Moodsville 2," featuring albums from Shirley Scott, Lem Winchester, Clark Terry, and Lucky Thompson, will air on Nov. 26 (the Saturday after Thanksgiving). -
DETS V. 11 should be arriving next week--and I'll be putting V. 12 on my b-day/Christmas list.

So far we've watched three of the nine--CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, and THE BODY SNATCHER. Surprisingly, CAT PEOPLE has been my least favorite so far; well-photographed, with some good, suspenseful scenes (particularly the shot with the protagonist stalking her romantic rival and the sound of her heels suddenly disappears), but the story wasn't as compelling as I'd expected; or perhaps it was simply that I found it hard to feel sympathetic to any of the characters. Karloff is great in THE BODY SNATCHER, which has a truly horrifying ending. I can't wait to re-watch some of these with the commentaries turned on.

The other night we drove up to Indy to see my dad and grandmother, and one of the CDs my wife took along was the 4-track Organissimo Christmas CD-R. I just now told her about this thread, and she, too, is clamoring for new Organissimo holiday tracks... says she'll buy the CD if you guys ever put one out. The world could use a truly hip Christmas jazz CD--it's been so long since we've had one. -_- -

HG seemed to me to be in a good state indeed, and I was struck by how comfortable I felt hanging out with someone whom I'd idolized and all but mythologized for so long... as jazz-freak-fans like myself are wont to do. Hey, good to see you posting here, Margaret. Something I meant to ask: is the current group going to record? Or release live recordings? A friend of mine at the Indy concert, a former jazz director and jock who knows his improv, said he certainly hopes so... he & I were both impressed by the trio's chemistry. And if ever there were a man on the side of the musicians, it would be Mr. Nessa. He deserves much praise and salutations--and/or at least enough cash to re-issue the rest of his label's catalogue. -

I'd like to hear you guys doing either "A Child Is Born" or a hard-swingin' version of "Greensleeves". -
Kalo, I got this set as well. My wife & I watched ZOMBIE Saturday night and enjoyed it so much that we watched it again last night with a friend. In fact, I was going to post about it today, but you beat me to it. I agree with everything you say--a stunningly good film, and rife with the theme of colonialism.

Hi The "Jewells" CD (SV-0273) has exactly the same music, 26 tracks, as the double LP (SJL 2250), no? Maybe you're comparing "Jewells" to "Boyd Meets Stravinsky" (LP-Savoy MG12040/CD-SV 0185), only 12 tracks, true, but including "Interlude" (first-ever big band recording of A Night In Tunisia), "Summertime" and "March of the Boyds", with Dizzy and Benny Harris; Trummy Young; Bothwell, Hal McKusick, Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff; Oscar Pettiford and Shelly Manne. And I agree re Savoy, who can we stalk to get a set like the recent Red Norvo and Billy Eckstine? F ← I was comparing it to the more recent Savoy CD. Didn't even realize that the older one was still available... thanks for the tip.

Daniel Aaron's AMERICAN NOTES and Herman Hesse's THE GLASS BEAD GAME. I went on the usual Hesse kick when I was a late-teen, but never got around to reading this one (or JOURNEY TO THE EAST, for that matter).

I loved that opening theme when I was a kid--half the reason I watched the show. (Same with S.W.A.T.) Hell, I may actually pick up this re-issue; thanks for the tip! -

This week on Night Lights it’s “Moodsville 1.” In 1960 Prestige’s Bob Weinstock launched a new series of records called Moodsville, as a response to the popularity of 1950s “mood music” albums, ushered in to a large extent by Jackie Gleason’s Capitol LPs featuring trumpeter Bobby Hackett. Prestige attempted to stake a somewhat higher aesthetic ground, stating, “We at Prestige feel that there is room for honest jazz performances of ballads wherein the musical integrity of the artist is maintained and at the same time the original beauty and feeling of the ballad is not lost.” What emerged was a sort of thinking-man’s jazz-ballad alternative, or jazz-for-jazz-loving-lovers. We’ll hear music from the very first Moodsville record, featuring pianist Red Garland and tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, as well as music from Moodsville LPs by Kenny Burrell, Coleman Hawkins, and Oliver Nelson. “Moodsville 1” airs Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11:05 p.m. (9:05 West Coast time, 12:05 a.m. East Coast time) on WFIU. It will be posted in the Night Lights archives by Monday afternoon. Special Organissimo note: listen for Dan Gould and Chris Albertson references in this program and win a free recycled Organissimo shipping package! Next week: the first of our two annual fund-drive programs. More details soon!

Picked this one up used & dirt-cheap a month or two back, mostly for Grant Green's presence. Good record.

Tonight on The Big Bands it’s “Kay Kyser’s Halloween Haunted House Bash.” In 1940 popular big-band leader Kay Kyser made a lighthearted horror film called You’ll Find Out—the only movie in which horror icons Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi, and Boris Karloff all appear. We’ll hear music and dialogue from the film, as well as Halloween swing classics from Glenn Miller (“Swingin’ at the Séance”), Claude Thornhill (“Portrait of a Guinea Farm”), Charlie Barnet ("Murder at Peyton Hall"), Cab Calloway ("The Ghost of Smokey Joe") and more. The show airs at 9 p.m. (7 p.m. West Coast time, 10 p.m. East Coast time); you can listen live, or wait until Halloween Monday afternoon, when the program will be posted in The Big Bands archives. Next week: "Swingin' in L.A." Music from Oliver Nelson (Live From Los Angeles) and a new Gerald Wilson release (In My Time).

Guilty as charged! And I've definitely gained from the practice...
