Nat King Cole Bear Family box?
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
$198 at CDWolf (not sure what the shipping is). Trying to look up the price at Deep Discount CD (where shipping's free), but it's taking forever for my computer to load the page. -
"It Came From Texas" this week on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Western swing has long been on the drawing board as well (and boy, do I have a title for it!). -
Duke's 1952 "Take the A Train" w/Betty Roche
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Discography
OK, just started doing an A/B, and it does sound like a different take... much longer piano intro, and sounds a bit different to my ears (was thinking perhaps the version on 1927-62 was an edit). 1927-62 version: Piano up to 00:48, then full orchestra Vocal begins at 1:03 Uptown version: Piano up to 1:33, then full orchestra Vocal begins at 1:48 -
While working on a Night Lights program about Betty Roche w/Duke Ellington, I noticed that the take of the legendary 1952 "A Train" on the 3-CD 1999 anthology 1927-1962 is noticeably shorter, by nearly a minute, than the take on the 2004 reissue of Ellington Uptown. Haven't A/B'd them yet, other than putting them in the player to make sure that the track times were correct--and they are. Yet the liner notes for both releases make no indication that they are different takes. On the 1999 release, these numbers are given: Mx. Co 48343-1; Col ML 4639 Couldn't find any numbers on the UPTOWN reissue, but it states that all of the first five tracks, including "A Train," were released on Col 4639.

Incisive analysis, Heatwave. Reading your posts makes me want to follow the game more thoroughly again. Are you a Cardinals fan, by any chance?

Volume is incredibly low on this, but it has footage of the Floyd at UFO circa early '67 (comes from a BBC documentary): Pink Floyd: "Interstellar Overdrive" at UFO

Just finished reading the entry for Piper at the Gates of Dawn in the marvelous 33 1/3 series and had to watch this video yet again: Astronomy Domine live '67 I'd like to write a story that could match the impact of that performance.

Any word on when we might see V. 13 in this series?

upcoming jazz crusaders set?
ghost of miles replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Cliff, if you'd like to hear a bit more, I devoted the entire second hour of a recent Afterglow program to it... go to the archives and select Part 2 for the August 4, 2006 show. -
Heatwave, You're more attuned to the Bosox' weaknesses than I am, but what if they come into Yankee Stadium next month and do to the Yanks what the Yanks just did to them? Yes, I'd surely bet on NY to take the division now if I had to, but I'm not ready to put a lock on the AL East just yet... re: Boston & NY, certain laws of logic do not always apply, even over a longer stretch. You a Cardinals fan, by any chance?

"It Came From Texas" this week on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I'd like to hear (or read) those improvised lyrics! Glad you guys liked the show, and thanks much for the remarks. Looking forward to doing the "tenacious tenors" followup at some point. And still grateful to Mr. Vega for pushing the program to the folks at Blue Lake. The Michigan LP has always felt like my second home state. -
Bop vocalese--does it hold up for you at all?
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
King Ubu, I love vocal jazz and jazz singing; doing Afterglow every week is only increasing my enthusiasm for the genre. It's vocalese that seems to really get on my nerves. I'd like to be a bit more open to it, I suppose, which is one of the reasons why I started the thread... I figured other posters here with an affection for said vocalese could offer up some suggestions, some explanation for why they like it, etc. It's obviously a vocal skill, but one for which I (so far) have next to no appreciation. I have several LH & Ross CDs but just can't bring myself to put them on again yet. Oddly enough, one group I do sort of enjoy is Les Blues Stars--can't really say why, though. Oh, and I dig (ducks incoming flames) the Four Freshmen's version of "Intermission Riff" on the Mosaic box; very early, somewhat-vocalese effort from the FF. -
Well, lemme tell ya, after what happened in 2004, NY could be 10 games out w/12 to play and I still wouldn't breathe easy... and the playoffs are a whole new season. Still, I'll admit it's pretty impressive for NY to come into Fenway and take five. I don't remember that ever happening. This article sheds a little light on the history of five-game sweeps:

Just got a promo here at the station, and after one quick listen, I think I can say with confidence that if you liked CARELESS LOVE, you'll like this one too. Mood & sensibility very similar... Sam Yahel on keyboards this time, though Larry Goldings does pop up on a couple of tracks. Covers of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, some co-written originals, and a couple of standards ("Smile" and "The Summer Wind"). Nothing grabbed me quite as immediately as "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" or some of the other tracks on CARELESS LOVE, but "Everybody's Talkin'" ( originally from MIDNIGHT COWBOY--I just played Armstrong's version of this on a show we taped the other day) and "Once In a While" (co-written original) sounded very good the first time around.

Sam Yahel backing Paul Simon?
ghost of miles replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yahel plays piano or organ on every single track of Madeleine Peyroux's new CD (Larry Goldings was the keyboardist on her last CD). -
Wow--Yanks were down 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh and the Bosox had runners on first & second when I turned in last night. Still, how can you give up, Dan, after 2004?

Bop vocalese--does it hold up for you at all?
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thanks for the recs, KU... yeah, so far I haven't really been able to get my ears around LH & R, though I like Annie Ross on her own. I do like Babs Gonzales and have played him several times on the radio; I'll look into your suggestions here as well. -
The other night I heard Ella doing "Ool-Ya-Koo" and thought I was going to go *&%$ nuts. Granted, this isn't a subgenre that I've explored with great depth, and many who sang in such a style could sing the phone book with more melodic appeal than I'll ever be able to summon for any tune, inside a shower or out. But man, does most of what I've heard sound dated and annoying. I've tried to board the Lambert Hendricks & Ross express several times as well, and always ended up jumping into the nearest culvert pretty damned quick. Eddie Jefferson I have some time for...what are some of the better records and/or artists in this style?

"It Came From Texas" this week on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Not next week... not sure when it will air, but I like the "ten tenors" concept. "Ten Tenacious Texas Tenors," perhaps? (Try to say that three times fast...) Budd Johnson Arnett Cobb Illinois Jacquet James Clay Marchel Ivery Buddy Tate Don Wilkerson David Fathead Newman King Curtis Booker Ervin That a good list? ...and btw, "It Came From Texas" is already archived. -
Anybody seen Jim Sangrey lately?

Addendum: has anybody seen the bridge? Hey guv'nor, your PM box is full again! Sent you a message courtesy of e-mail instead. -
Yeah, a # of us have been waiting/hoping for an "Arista Quartets" Braxton Mosaic for a long time now... the Sony/BMG merger initially was supposed to be good for Mosaic re: access, but who knows now? If the rumours swirling around the Miles releases are true, the BMG bean-counters have gotten the upper hand.. you'd think that might make them more likely to lease material they themselves will never deign to reissue, but logic isn't something I generally associate with the music industry.
