  1. As the writer Gertrude Stein once said of Oakland, "There's no 'there' there."
  2. I'll try to tune in for this, Steve. Please send Bill a very grateful happy birthday wish from me--I frequently turn to his VeeJay recordings and his album with Oscar Peterson for on-air play. Much appreciation from this Indiana jazz fan!
  3. RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. That's what I was thinking... all those 96 users online at 1 p.m. and all. Time to do the dance of spring.
  5. Yes, AB. Big, wet, sloppy smooches all around!
  6. This board simply needs to GET A GRIP. For God's sake, people, calm down and deal with it... things are getting all blown out of proportion. You know what? If people want to take a break from the board, LET THEM. I really like Hans, Brownie, etc., and I hope that they come back, but now some folks are calling for the board to be shut down. That's absurd--and HIGHLY disrespectful to the vast majority of us who enjoy this board and use it respectfully on a daily basis. If Jim A. says "Screw it, this ain't worth it," fine, it's his board... but discussions like this one seem to me to only be adding to the aggravation, rather than alleviating it. A lot of pissing contests going on that I wish were going on offboard. Nevertheless I'll deal with it and stop reading threads if they start to annoy me... plus we now have the long-sought IGNORE function. So what's the problem?
  7. Good thing I remembered to put on my deodorant this morning...
  8. Try looking for an import series called YOUNG BIRD. The first two volumes (which came out as a double-CD) contain much, if not all, of the material for which you're looking.
  9. But what will the Jedi Council think?
  10. Amen! Hell Forum Used to have music... didn't hear it this time. The ads are new, though.
  11. As well as being populated by those who feel that the "banned" should never have been banned in the first place. One imagines that the talk of SACDs would be pretty prominent over there..... Some boards have "Hell" forums where certain threads are consigned... there could be a "Hell" forum for the damne--er, I mean, banned.
  12. Agreed. The only people who've been banned from here have been people who, in one way or another, have been provocative and problematic in an ongoing manner. DEEP, GregM, Aric... all three were prolonged headaches for Jim in one way or another, and whatever redeeming qualities they brought to the board (DEEP's musical background, GregM's obvious erudition and intellect, Aric's passion for jazz and liveliness) were eventually outweighed by the chaos and ill will that they sowed. Jim's a very laidback, very fairminded guy; I'd say getting kicked off by him should be cause for self-reflection on the bannee's part.
  13. May the coming year bestow upon you a Boswell Sisters Mosaic set!
  14. BMG needs to run another 60% off, free-shipping coupon... I want that Norman Granz jam box!
  15. I think Weizen's a fan... I've never seen it, believe it or not. At breakfast today some pals & I were talking SPACE 1999/BATTLESHIP GALACTICA... different generation, eh?
  16. Does he still post? Anybody see new member "Wankyjazz"'s, uh, musings today?
  17. Jim, if you make it down to Indy, let us know! I'm just down the road apiece in Bloomington, and sheldonm, rachel, and jazzmessenger all hail from Indy... I'm sure we'd all come out to see you. I'll also do whatever I can to have Joe promote it on his weekday jazz program Just You and Me. In Indy, try contacting WICR; they're the main station for jazz (WFYI, the local NPR member station, doesn't play any at all).
  18. My memory of the Signal to Noise article is rather fuzzy, but I think Grimes may have played gigs as late as '68 on the West Coast... and started playing again when William Parker gave him a bass (sometime in 2002?). But yes, at least 30 years, because by 1971 he had sold his bass (again, maybe even earlier--Mike can supply correct dates on all of this, I'm sure).
  19. Maybe Hunter just couldn't take four more years of W. Clem, F & Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is a great read and too often overlooked in the shadows of LAS VEGAS, IMO.
  20. Tina Brooks' MINOR MOVE, which provoked much discussion as AOTW.
  21. Actually, it's not the same person, is it? Our "Ingram" doesn't seem to have ever posted about jazz guitar... seems inconceivable that he wouldn't if he were the same, and our Ingram hails from Aberdeen. I'm also assuming that it's a fairly common last name on the other side of the Big Pond.
  22. "Ingram" is Adrian Ingram? Hell, I've got his Wes Montgomery bio and didn't even make any connection, though I knew the author was English...
  23. This week on Night Lights it's "Even White Girls Get the Blues," a look at three late-1950s blues-concept LPs by white female vocalists. We'll hear selections from Lee Wiley's 1957 RCA album A TOUCH OF THE BLUES (backed by Billy Butterfield and His Orchestra), Julie London's 1957 "blues noir" LP ABOUT THE BLUES, and Jo Stafford's 1959 concept record BALLAD OF THE BLUES, featuring traditionals arranged by her husband Paul Weston and original linking music written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, who would go on to win several Academy Awards and Grammys. We'll also hear music from Dinah Shore's 1960 Capitol album DINAH SINGS SOME BLUES WITH RED (as in Norvo). The program airs this Saturday at 11:05 p.m. (8:05 California time, 10:05 Chicago time) on WFIU 103.7 FM; you can listen to it live, or in the Night Lights archives, where it will be posted Monday afternoon. Special thanks to Dan Gould for providing the Dinah Shore Capitol material! And special thanks to Allen Lowe, from whose book AMERICAN POP: FROM MINSTREL TO MOJO I quote in both this and next week's show. Next week: "Why Don't You Do Right," a program devoted to 1940s vocalists and songwriters Una Mae Carlisle and Lil Green.
  24. Hoping it'll be archived, Big Al. I'll post when the new Big Bands site is up and running.
