  1. I was at a B & N last week and saw a DVD box-set of Cassavetes' work that included SHADOWS. Had no idea that it had made it to DVD.
  2. Sounds mighty close to my dad's advice about driving!
  3. Yiou know, I've heard the name "Preston Sturges" so much over the years, read so much about him, seen all kinds of tributes to him, etc., that I figured that I had seen at least some of his films at least once. That list proves me wrong. Never seen (or heard) of any of them. I feel so...so...IGNUNT! (which is why I started this thread - I don't like being ignunt! ) Discovering this stuff oughta be BIG fun! I mean, any cat that has a newspaper headline that reads MUSSOLINI RESIGNS! "Enough Is Sufficient", says Dictator (or something very similar) in the wake of some American chick giving birth to sextuplets obviously lives on a planet that I'd like to hang out at for a while. I've seen only SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS and THE PALM BEACH STORY, but they won't be hours wasted if you ever get to see them.
  4. Thanks for doing that, Marla. "The Late Miss D" is now archived. I should have the playlist up in another hour or so.
  5. Sue Mingus will sue you now.
  6. Didn't see it, Tony--what went wrong? Martin Denny-bashing?
  7. This week on Night Lights it's "The Late Miss D," a program devoted to the 1962-63 Roulette recordings of Dinah Washington, who died at the age of 38 in 1963. Washington's Roulette period offers a mix of ballads with strings, blues, pop, and big-band jazz; although often overshadowed by her long stay on Mercury (1946-61), this last chapter in the career of a legendary singer shows her maintaining the same high standards of soulful performance. The program airs on WFIU at 11:05 p.m. Saturday night (8:05 California time, 10:05 Chicago time); you can listen live, or in the Night Lights archives, where it will be posted Monday afternoon. Next week: "Even White Girls Get the Blues," a program devoted to 1950s blues concept LPs by Lee Wiley, Julie London, Jo Stafford, and Dinah Shore.
  8. Got one of those and izz vehry nice too!
  9. Soon to be portraying him in the film I THOUGHT I HEARD BUDDY BOLDEN RAP.
  10. Excellent news & congratulations, Lazaro! I'll be tuning in for the Grimes interview and more.
  11. I'd bid you for it but I'm not very keen... I've already got one, you see... izz vehry nice!!
  12. Did some Googling on Sean Flynn and discovered he was in WHERE THE BOYS ARE... also took a turn as SON OF CAPTAIN BLOOD. Here's a photo Flynn took in Vietnam in 1966: Flynn photo There's also a book about father and son: Inherited Risk Photo of Flynn in Saigon circa 1966: FlynnSaigon'66 Many more photos of Sean Flynn here, including the last known one, of him and Dana Stone riding off into Cambodia in 1970. The Clash also wrote a song about him ("Sean Flynn").
  13. Hey, welcome aboard, and, to echo Lon, please stay! I really enjoyed Porter's book on Coltrane; what's he up to these days? My wife's an Episcopalian, and if I ever get "organzied" about my religious beliefs, that's probably where I'll end up... There's another jazz fan/priest here who posts from the West Coast. You'll find lots of voracious readers around this joint too, that's for sure: Now reading
  14. Well, that's not TOO far from working w/Jerry Lewis... Tonight's movie - The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone. Never seen it in, at least not more than a few clips here and there. Don't know if this is necessarily my bag, but who knows? Anybody got some good and/or kind words for this one? Yes! My wife & I watch this every Thanksgiving Day (and the 2-disc DVD that came out a couple of years ago has some great extras on it). "Swashbuckling fun" and all that indeed, but it really is an unabashed celebration of the epic-entertainment form... a well-done celebration, as opposed to the static and staid versions that seemed to take hold in the 1950s. Historical aside: Flynn's son (Sean, I believe) is mentioned in Michael Herr's incredible Vietnam War journalism book DISPATCHES... he was a photographer who disappeared in Cambodia in 1970 (only recently, I think, have they learned that he and his friend were executed by the Khmer Rouge). Herr's description of Sean Flynn sounds a bit like the characters his father played in movies.
  15. Off-topic somewhat, but be sure to catch FIVE CAME BACK (1939) if it ever shows up on TCM. It's about a plane that goes down in a South American jungle, a sort of early disaster/survivor flick with class overtones and themes... Eleven passengers survive the crash, but the plane (as repaired) will be able to lift off with only five on board... and they're deep in the Amazon rainforest, surrounded by headhunters. It was written by Dalton Trumbo and Nathanael West, directed by Maureen O'Sullivan's husband Joh Farrow, and had a very interesting cast (Lucille Ball as a shady woman, Chester Morris of "Boston Blackie" fame as a pilot, and John Carradine).
  16. Volume 11 is here. Together with a Louis Armstrong live CD, the first of four volumes. More information at the Storyville site. D.E.T.S Vol.11 Louis Armstrong (April 12 release in the U.S? according to Jazzmatazz) Great, great news, LAL--thanks for posting! I'm going to be featuring these once a month on my WFIU program The Big Bands, starting in April. (April 1945 broadcasts for the April show, May 1945 broadcasts for the May show, etc.) Hope the sound improves over V. 10...
  17. Coltrane and Herbie Nichols. 9/23 and 1/3 are almost holy days for me... also Bud Powell on 9/27. I also play Elliott Smith's music now on the anniversary of his death.
  18. Happy birthday, my man!
  19. You're presuming that the most dependable family of precision-guided munitions originates in the Pentagon. B-) The Ministry of Silly Walks?
  20. Hope it's a swingin' one!
  21. To a truly great guy!
  22. I think Weizen copped to my "surgical missile strike" idea and called up a buddy at the Pentagon who was into him for a few JRVGs... Glad some folks are getting theirs and hope everybody else who ordered does too. "Thousands of dollars..." yes, I'm sure Seagram stock is reeling as badly as those who imbibe too much of it.
  23. Eh? You say he introduced you to the wonderful world of Jim Beam?! Happy belated but doubled b-day wishes, JimR.
  24. Some previous Roy discussion here.
