  1. Yes, I've been looking for that one as well... I have a real sweet tooth for Burns. The Jazz Studio series does seem like a good one for Mosaic as well; with the more liberal access to Universal of late, perhaps it will eventually materialize.
  2. I've picked up all six of the Japanese re-issues... of the four I've listened to so far, the sound has been immaculate.
  3. Nope. Not a single soul... nary a one.
  4. Yes, I was going to mention that nearly all of the Byrds' albums have been nicely expanded on the latest CD re-issues and are among my favorites in this category. Others that come to mind are the Who's MY GENERATION and the Ramones' LEAVE HOME, which has an amazing live 1976 gig from California to round it out. Speaking of the Kinks, I'm not enough of a fanatic to pick up that new 3-CD VILLAGE set, but I did snap up nearly all of the Castle re-issues that came out several years ago--nicely expanded versions of SOMETHING ELSE, FACE TO FACE, VILLAGE GREEN, etc., and would recommend those to anybody who's a fan. As for the Velvets, I still have FULLY LOADED on my radar.
  5. Didn't she write some of Linda Ronstadt's hits? I remember reading about her as a kid, but in the context of a songwriter who wanted to be more of a performer.
  6. That's rough! It's true the book is pretty heavy! Don't remember what the postage was on my copy but it was nothing like that! Well, France is closer to Denmark Perhaps another reason to move to France! Anybody know when the next volume in the Ellington Treasury shows series is scheduled for release? I've been picking up some of the first 10 here & there--am going to devote one big-band show a month to them from April through August.
  7. Offer still available! So is it $60, or $30? Ghost, it is $60 NOW. It was $119 originally. Believe me, it's worth every cent! When you get it, you'll find out how good a value it is Brownie, I want it very much, but they want $45 to ship to the U.S.--I'm probably going to have to pass. I've seen the book before, and it is indeed beautiful.
  8. Alan's site lists some Fresh Sound releases for Feb. 8. Two of them are JAZZ IN MEXICO 1954--THE LEGENDARY SESSIONS, V. 1 and 2. Any idea what these might be?
  9. My in-laws live about an hour west of Boston (little town named Berlin) and report getting 27 inches... they say the going rate for a driveway clearing job is up to $25 today.
  10. Great piece, Mike! Lisa Sorg is an old buddy of mine--used to live upstairs from me here in Bloomington and was my editor for several years at the old Bloomington Independent. I've tried to drop her a line every year or so since she moved down the Texas way.
  11. I think just saying that would take up most of the promo spot.
  12. Dan, I'm hurt! The point of the program--such as it is in my head at this point--is that there was this small run of "blues" concept LPs by white female singers in the late 1950s... singers we would not normally associate with the blues.
  13. I don't think it's offensive... but race tends to be the third rail of media discourse(which is not a bad thing IMO)--therefore I'd rather err on the side of caution.
  14. Well, I'm mulling over my March Night Lights programs (the listings are due next week) and the title I've come up with for one gives me pause. I'm going to feature Jo Stafford's BALLAD OF THE BLUES, Julie London's ABOUT THE BLUES, and Lee Wiley's A TOUCH OF THE BLUES--all late-1950s records by white singers (although I realize Wiley was part Native American). Do you think said title might be offensive to some listeners? Night Lights airs weekly on Bloomington's NPR member station, and there's usually a show-specific promo including the title that runs during the week preceding the show.
  15. That's an interesting one I hadn't expected. Wonder if Osby ever did any big-band work in his early years?? Or any of the othe M-Base guys, while we're at it. I interviewed Osby several years ago when he came to Bloomington. As a teenager he played with some 1970s soul-revue bands... now that's another topic in and of itself, I suppose. His description of his experience and what he got from it really put me in mind of the jazz musicians who played the R & B gutbucket circuit in the 1950s. Past 1980 or so, how available has this kind of schooling been to young musicians?
  16. Yes, we have two of those at the station. I also picked up a Verve LP for $4 which may or may not overlap w/the CDs you mention.
  17. No, but he did do a State Dpt. tour in the early 1960s of some Middle Eastern countries (it was aborted because of JFK's assassination), which is what led him & Strayhorn to write THE FAR EAST SUITE.
  18. Will do, Leeway. I've got a copy of the book--thanks for the tip. Jim, I'll have to look around and see if I can scare up (or more likely borrow) that Goodman LP. So far the music I have in mind includes Ellington's FAR EAST SUITE (inspired by Ellington's early-1960s tour) & some of the Armstrong and Gillespie concert recordings. Looking forward to reading the book and finding out about more acts that were caught on tape.
  19. I've been thinking about doing a Night Lights program devoted to the 1950s and 60s jazz State Dpt. tours ever since last summer... now there's a book. Good timing, eh? I've scheduled the program for the beginning of April. Satchmo Blows Up the World
  20. Actually, I'm a stupid idiot......stumbled mightily around July 4th. I feel your pain. To quote Mark Twain, "It's easy to give up smoking... I've done it hundreds of times."
  21. Excellent suggestion...perhaps a little SOS call to Stefan Wood is in order. Why waste time prowling the bins for that millionth piece of scratchy vinyl when he could ski over here w/a fresh pack, right? Well, if I were still a smoker, being down to six would put me in a bit of a sweat... but you are the rara avis social-smoker, are you not, Weizen?
  22. What are you trying to tell us about the actual voting results in Ohio? Guy Perhaps God didn't get the memo from Karl Rove. We got nailed the week before Christmas... some snow today, but nothing like what you guys are getting. Quite a damned wind-chill effect going on, though. Walked two blocks from my car to the station and thought my coffee was going to ice up.
  23. Thanks for the report, Weizen. Sounds like a great time! If they ever come through Indpls.' Jazz Kitchen, I'll be sure to catch them.
  24. Hey all, I'll be featuring the late-1980s Blue Note recordings of the Pullen-Adams Quartet this evening on Night Lights. You can listen live at 11:05 (8:05 California time, 10:05 Chicago time) here, or in the archives, where it will be posted on Monday. Next week: "Boppin' in Beantown," late-1940s and early-1950s jazz from Boston.
  25. Found them both on Amazon: here's the Library Journal review of BLUE NIPPON: Here's one (uncredited) for JAZZ JOURNEYS:
