  1. Hoo boy... I guess I'm outta luck since I didn't watch the game or the halftime show--for those of you who did, how much do you think your trauma is worth?
  2. I voted for Hutch--his work on DESTINATION OUT is what got me into vibes in the first place, as discussed earlier in this thread. Right now I'm on a Lem Winchester kick, having recently picked up all four of his Fantasy re-issues.
  3. I'm going to register as "Greg" and make a splashy posting debut by attacking Europeans for their anti-Semitism. Think that one will pass muster with "Ben"?
  4. I believe Still also wrote some arrangements for Paul Whiteman's band in the late 1920s.
  5. AnythingGoes It's a standards album by the regular trio.
  6. Yes, I usually wait until there's at least a "buy one, get two free" offer. It works out quite nicely in terms of money spent.
  7. Well, maybe I'll go ahead & grab it, Lon--BMG has it, and I still have a few freebies coming to me, so I won't feel too bad if Sony re-masters & re-issues it next year or something.
  8. Dave Douglas, STRANGE LIBERATION Dave Douglas, WITNESS Cannonball Adderley, INSIDE STRAIGHT Uri Caine, TOYS Uri Caine, BLUE WAIL Claude Thornhill, 1946-47 (Hep) Joel Frahm/Brad Mehldau, DON'T EXPLAIN Stone Roses, THE STONE ROSES Replacements, ALL FOR NOTHING/NOTHING FOR ALL Sonny Boy Williamson, ESSENTIAL SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON
  9. Looking these over makes me wish yet again that Mosaic would finally get around to the long-promised Capitol Big Bands box. A lot of interesting material sitting there in the vaults, even if you discount the Benny Carter and Cootie Williams (already released on the Capitol Jazz box).
  10. Not so fast, Mark... I believe it's $4.95 for a three-day trial, and you have to give them your credit-card number... Why not enjoy the truly free nipples right here on Organissimo? nipple
  11. Chancellor Smith used to be my dad's boss! My brothers & I just got the following e-mail: Small world indeed! Wonder if he ever cornered Dad in the chowline about his performance...
  12. Is that the Carnegie Hall Concert that Columbia released? Cause I actually do have that one, and it is one of the others that I do return to relatively often... Yep, and BMG has it--I picked it up with some of my freebie vouchers.
  13. I've been wanting that one lately myself, hoping that Sony will re-master and re-issue it--I'm wary of going near the late-80s Columbia CDs. I want to do a "Jazz Goes Disney" radio program, and that Brubeck would surely feature in it.
  14. WTF, Aric? I wasn't making any "snide comment" about fusion. There are forms of fusion I happen to like--my point is simply that most jazz fans I know can't stand the sound of electric piano in jazz. Sorry if I offended you, Herr Fusion Cop! B)
  15. Yes, Lon, I meant to mention that session! VERY interesting Duke date on the Capitol Mosaic set.
  16. Yes, the album will definitely be part of the Mosaic Select that's forthcoming at the end of March. I know many here are wary of Ron McMaster's audio work, and he's had a hand in a number of the Selects--so you might want to go for a Japanese version if you're in the anti-McMaster camp. (Assuming he's doing the Reece set.)
  17. The Artie Shaw 1944-45 3-CD set is not to be missed. What a band! And Francois is right on about Sam Donahue--I recently picked up all four of the Heps, and that was one underrated outfit. I've never been a label completist before--not even with Mosaic--but I love what Hep puts out so much that I just might try to eventually snap up everything they've ever released on CD. Is the Teddy Hill still available? Worlds Records doesn't seem to have that one, and I'd really like to find it--early Diz and all that.
  18. Yes, you can. I got it about a year and a half ago--it's one of their "on-demand" titles, I believe, and you'll also get a copy of the liner notes. Grant Green and Budd Johnson appear on a couple of tracks as well. As sacred jazz it predates Ellington's concert by a couple of years (though I don't want to venture into saying that it's the first example of it--there's some debate about that, and you could probably argue that "Come Sunday" set aside by itself is the first example). Great stuff, esp. for Mary Lou fans; hopefully some more of her scattered 1950s and 60s material will make its way onto CD.
  19. Wow... I used to give plasma in my poor-student days to buy jazz CDs and thought I'd gone pretty far out, but this guy has me beat!
  20. Heresy, brothers and sisters, heresy is what I'm guilty of. I've lately begun to enjoy the sound of electric piano in both 1970s and more recent jazz--enjoying it as a texture, as it were. (Listening to Uri Caine on the latest Dave Douglas CD, as well as some late-70's J.J. Johnson material, is what brought on this post.) For most of my relatively brief (8-9 years) jazz listening career, I've absolutely loathed hearing an electric piano on jazz albums. (Outside of the electric-Miles canon, where for some reason I more grudgingly accepted it.) It strikes me now as a rather close-minded attitude, although I'm still far more partial to acoustic pianos. Any thoughts on this subject? Any recommendations for really good jazz electric piano? Joe Milazzo once made reference to a Bill Evans album, but I can't recall which one now--perhaps the Columbia LP that he did.
  21. Nice set-lists there, chuckyd4. I'm a jazz jock too--in fact, there seem to be a number of us around these parts (although RonF is away for the moment). I'll definitely try to tune in! Thanks for posting the link.
  22. A link from your friendly neighborhood crack dealer: RhinoHandmade
  23. Ain't I a hopeless romantic? I asked for two Rhino Handmades: Jimmy Scott's FALLING IN LOVE IS WONDERFUL (well, hey, there you go!) and Percy Mayfield's Tangerine recordings. Thanks to my wonderful wife, a package from Rhino arrived yesterday--but I'm not allowed to open it till Feb. 14. Of course I could say, "You know, that Jimmy Scott album is supposed to be pretty sweet on the ears for lovers..."
