I can’t remember if Spaulding mentions this composition in his memoir or not—will check tomorrow when I’m at work. I might also message him about it through Facebook.

I didn't ask about the parameters of the set in my email (which was primarily a lobbying attempt for Mark to write the booklet notes, but turns out they've already been done by Bob Blumenthal). My conceptual guess is that they're not including sideman dates in general, but putting the Dorhams in there because he and Joe were effectively co-leaders in that period, and because the official # of Joe leader dates would be a bit small to justify a standard Mosaic box set. No idea about other material of any kind, released or unreleased.

Apologies, was thinking of another board thread re "Asphalt Jungle" when I posted that. I meant as opposed to the live versions to be found on The Great Paris Concert and In The Uncommon Market. Derrick Bang's book on movie/TV crime and spy jazz from 1950-1970 mentions Ellington recording a three-part version, "The Asphalt Jungle Suite," and then the subsequent 45 that included "Asphalt Jungle Twist" on the b-side. All of this makes me wish yet again that Mosaic would do completist justice to the Sony-owned Ellington catalogue from 1947-52 and 1956-62.

“A Time To Go,” from Patterns. James Spaulding wrote it. A bit of a mystery, though—in Michael Cuscuna’s liner notes to the 1980 LP release, he says Spaulding composed it upon hearing of MLK’s assassination. But the CD lists the recording date of the album as March 14, 1968. So either the date’s off, or perhaps Spaulding dedicated/titled it in honor of King after King’s death three weeks later.

The studio version of “Asphalt Jungle Theme” was also included on Sony’s 3-CD 1999 anthology The Duke: The Essential Collection 1927-1962

I’d forgotten what a wonderful score John Barry wrote for the 1981 film Body Heat—the Film Score Monthly reissue really does it justice:

Kluber’s a big gamble for sure. Yankees’ rotation remains a colossal question mark and I can’t see them pulling off a World Series run with it at the moment. Toronto’s certainly beefed up their lineup even more, but not so sure about their pitching. The Rays, meanwhile, will do what the Rays do and field a 90-95 wins team with whatever pieces they have. So yeah, quite a bloodbath to come in the AL East. Curious to see how the season opens this year. I can’t imagine we’ll be at a point by April where stadium attendance policy is completely open, given the absolute mess of vaccine production and distribution that the new admin’s inherited. But perhaps very limited attendance early on that increases slowly as case #s and deaths decline? (Of course, a number of teams already experience limited attendance even in non-Covid circumstances...)

I don’t have any other details, but I can confirm that my hunch about the inclusion of Dorham’s Una Mas and Trumpeta Toccata was correct.

I remember watching that as well—and 714 too. Remarkable how he got there, never having a 50-HR season—just incredibly consistent power (and few injuries) for 20 years.

I've noticed on Discogs that many UK-based sellers are either charging astronomical shipping rates or not shipping to the U.S. at all. I've bought a number of CDs from UK proprietors online in the past but can't imagine doing so now--at least when I see the shipping rates for most of the items I'm interested in. (One 2-CD set was 12 pounds but shipping was going to cost 40 pounds.)

Played a couple cuts on the show today off a live CD that he recorded there in 2007, with Jose James guesting on vocals.

The 1963 idea is interesting! Wouldn't be surprised if Mosaic's planning to fold the two Dorham leader dates (Una Mas and Trompeta Toccata) w/Joe into the set, if it's a Joe Henderson 1963-66 Blue Note box, on the grounds that he and Kenny worked together so much during that period. Dorham's on three of the five Blue Note Henderson albums iirc. What would really be awesome would be a rehearsal session or some other recording of the Dorham-Henderson 1966 big band... but that's a holy grail too far, I'm sure.
