Don't look now, Yankees tied with BoSox atop AL East. ... Rays still stinkin' up the joint in Cleveland.
-
After careful consideration, I'm taking the Magic in this series.
-
No no, I meant I'd ordered the compilation titled "Charlie Parker Hi Fi."
-
Picked up the above mentioned title, and this: "Jay McShann -- Blues from Kansas City"

Of those, I have the Diz, the Chu and the Basie --- and the other two (Parker and Goodman) are on my wish list as well!! The Basie doesn't seem to get much love...but I think it's fantastic. That's one of those sets that I can blindly choose any one of the disks (of which there are 8) and be guaranteed a good time. It's a feast! I've been preaching the Dizzie and Chu around here for awhile, so I absolutely recommend those. The Diz set is awesome. Many say there's better Diz out there...which may be true, I don't know. This set covers a great variety and it's all fun. Excellent sound quality and Dizzie's brilliant playing make this one of my favs. It's accessible too. The Chu's great as well and has become a personal favorite (recently dethroned by the new Armstrong as my #1). (...) Thanks for your comments Bix on the ones I'd listed.

Not willing to drop the $$ for the complete Verve box right now, so I'm thinking this would be a good (cheap) introduction to Parker on Verve.
-
Now there's something you don't hear too often. .... Congrats on the book.
-
Ah well. I'm batting .750 ... which just happens to approximate the on-base percentage of anyone facing the Rays' bullpen.
-
Ordered some Parkers today: (with the help of boardmembers ... thanks) Norman Granz' JATP Carnegie Hall 1949 At Birdland (complete) Charlie Parker At the Open Door
-
... course, doesn't matter when you're bullpen can't throw strikes. 10-4 lead in the ninth is an 11-10 loss.

Bad news for Aki. Didn't see the play. Something to keep an eye on: Rays offense is picking up. They flashed a stat on tonight's broadcast last inning saying Tampa leads the majors for the month of May with, I think, 6.8 runs/game.
-
OK. On their way to me now are the '49 JATP Carnegie Hall album (pablo); the Complete at Birdland (you're right, JS. It's cheaper to get both volumes and duplicate than it is to just purchase Vol. 2); the Prestige "Charlie Parker" that I think I spied on the desert island parker recordings thread, which includes performances at 52nd Street and St. Nick's; and the "At the Open Door" album. ... so basically everything that's been mentioned so far ... One other title I have on hand here that I neglected to mention is the "Charlie Parker, Lester Young Complete JATP Performances" (definitive), recorded in '46 and '49, but which has no duplication with the Pablo JATP mentioned above. Going to cue it up here soon. I sure appreciate all the input. Going through a bit of a Bird thing lately.

Seems like a nice progression. The jsp "Studio Chronicles" does contain three McShann sessions, 14 tracks in all, recorded between 1940 - 42. Thank you for mentioning those. I'll forage around for the Decca stuff. (ordered the "Open Door" performances. Thanks jsngry. The Birdland you reference might be a little more difficult to find at a reasonable $.)
-
I like the Live at Rocklands a lot. BTW Where can one fin the Open Door material? I did 't see it at Amazon or CDUniverse. I see it here at amazon.

It's this one, which does not contain the performance you mentioned. The first disc is mostly a sextet comprised of Parker, Red Rodney, J.J. Johnson, Al Haig, Tommy Potter and Roy Haynes. Pretty muddy, recorded Feb. 14, 1950. The last part of the first disc and all of the second is the Charlie Parker Quintet with Navarro (some debate over that, apparently), Powell, Curley Russell and Blakey. Recorded May 15-16, 1950. Includes one seriously butchered mix of 'Wahoo' that upon first listen I took as the first recorded evidence of free jazz. I'll look for the Open Door and the other Birdland you've suggested. Thank you.

The Essential Charlie Parker. Obviously, googling that phrase brings up dozens of "essential" compilations. So I turn to the collective wisdom here for your advice. (I tried searching for a similar thread here, which must exist, but I am apparently too dense to find it). Here's where I'm at: Studio Recordings 1. "A Studio Chronicle, 1940 - 1948" (jsp) which, as I understand it, includes all the Dial and Savoy studio masters, plus additional material from 1940, including -- I think -- the only version of "Cherokee" I have, performed here by a quartet with one Efferge Ware on guitar. 2. "Yardbird Suite" (rhino). Compilation of mostly studio recordings between 1945 - 52. 3. "Charlie Parker Jam Sessions, 1952" (definitive). Live Recordings 1. "Massey Hall" (ojc) The one with Mingus' overdubs. 2. "The Complete Live Performances on Savoy," which include mostly Royal Roost recordings, but also a bright remastering of the Diz & Bird at Carnegie Hall performance from '47. 3. "Town Hall, June 22 1945" (uptown) 4. "At Birdland, Vol. 1" (ember). Much of the first disc is terribly muddy. The second disc, from performances May 15-16, 1950, are gold. 5. "Washington Concerts, With Quartet and The Orchestra" (blue note). Wonderful sound quality on these recordings featuring Parker with Joe Timer's Orchestra and also in quartet with Max Roach. 6. "Washington DC, 1945" (uptown). Need to listen more closely to this one to make a fair judgment about it. It's a recording with some local musicians. 7. "The Happy Bird" (collectables). Taken from a performance in Boston in 1951 with mostly local musicians. Good, not inspired. So that's it, basically, other than a single-disc Savoy compilation. I have my eye on the Mosaic Benedetti recordings, but beyond that, what Parker am I missing that I should listen to?

Happy Birthday! ... Have a good 'un -
Now checking out this really nice alto player -- The Dmitry Baevsky Quartet. Fairly straight ahead. Good stuff.

Yes, yes. Job well done!

Listening to Hays now. Very nice.

Or maybe it's called editing.

I notice -- and I'm a little surprised not to have noticed this already -- that Toronto has played just 9 games against AL East opponents, and is 4-5 in those games. They have amassed much of their current winning record against the AL Central, where they are 16-8. By comparison, every other AL East team has played at least 22 games (Baltimore is 23) against AL East opponents, with only the Sox (16-6) and Rays (12-10) having winning records there. The point? Maybe if you believe the AL Central is somewhat weaker than the East (and only one team -- the Royals -- has a winning record against the AL East. Most of the rest are dismal), then the Jays record might flatten out here as soon as they engage the East in earnest. They have now lost 6 in a row and I look for them to be battling the Rays for third place in the not-too-distant future.

getting to be that way. With Kazmir on the DL, Price is going to be called up on Monday by the Rays, who drop-kicked the Marlins again tonight to crawl a game over .500 and within 3.5 games of first place. ... The Marlins look like a mess, from what I saw. They were well over 100 pitches by the third inning in Friday night's blowout. The pen is weary, they were kicking the ball around on defense a bit and they're not real scary at the plate. No situational hitting at all. ... Anyways, I better shut up. Last time I said a team looked bad against the Rays it was the A's and they promptly went out and won two straight from Tampa. All I know is, it's good to get Kaz and Percy out of there and get Price and Isringhousen in. See what they can do.

I'm always sorry to hear about the dust-ups. And if I'm honest with myself, I have to admit I'm as guilty as the next guy of not wiping my shoes before I barge in and grab a seat to pound the table about one thing or another from time to time. It is Jim's place and I for one will treat it that way in the future. And I sure want to be informed I'm out of line if I ever step there. The above suggestion by rostasi isn't a half-bad idea, especially if the board is not serving the band positively. Seems it could be done simply by re-naming the forum while keeping it linked from the organissimo main page. ... with the appropriate disclaimers, etc. And if it's going to cost $$ to accomplish that, or whatever happens, I do hope Jim isn't reluctant to broach that subject. Whatever happens, this site contains a wealth of knowledge and some wonderful members, all of whom deserve at least respect. And now I'm hungry, which proves the point that if you wander these corridors long enough, you'll starve.

Thanks Larry.
