  1. Worked. Watched the fireworks over the waterfront from the third-floor balcony there. Could hear the children squealing in delight from balconies in the apartment building across the street. ... Happy Fourth ... if you're still awake ...
  2. I'm enjoying your comments on the performances. Sounds like a festive time! Enjoy.
  3. Check out these babies! I would love to listen to one of these.
  4. Thanks Drew. I appreciate all the advice and info. My initial thought was to contact a property management company just to get an idea of the market. I did a quick search last night of one local property management company's web site and they had just a handful of houses available in the general price range I'm thinking of for this place, so maybe I'm low-balling it? I'll contact a realtor I know as well. Yikes. This sounds like a horror story. Hopefully an exception, not the rule, and maybe puts added emphasis on Drew's point above about being vigilant about the whole application process, etc.
  5. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience as a landlord. I'm weighing whether to rent a home I own and am considering sounding out a property management company just to get a feel for the market. What are some of the pitfalls of being a landlord?
  6. I can't believe that collapse in Baltimore. Don't look now, but the Rays are on a 7-game roll, 9-1 in their last 10. I think they lost 8 in a row heading into last year's All Star game. And they have the second-best record in baseball (behind the Dodgers) since somewhere in late April, I believe.
  7. Way too young.
  8. ... and, pretty big series between Jays and Rays this week. Halladay v. Niemann tomorrow.
  9. Boy the Mets stink. That's some bad baseball. I think I picked 'em to finish first in the pre-season poll.
  10. Rays are reportedly first team to surpass 100 HR and 100 SB before all-star break, or by June 28, or something along those lines. Nice sweep of the stinkin' Marlins.
  11. I'm jealous
  12. His legacy as an extremely eccentric guy is pretty well established. Whether he was convicted of abusing children or not, a grown man wanting to play with, sleep with, cuddle with other people's children can't be healthy for anyone involved, can it? There are glaring bright lines you don't cross with kids, and he pretty clearly crossed them. Whether his conduct was proven to be criminal is kind of beside the point. ... IMHO. Would anyone here have let their kids anywhere near the guy? I don't think so.

These look really nice, and would (will) suit me fine. Thanks for bringing them up.
  14. Happy Birthday PhillyQ
  15. Notice, though, that the internet experienced extremely heavy traffic right after his death. A lot of people were hitting web sites that had information about Michael Jackson. That tells you people were pretty aggressively seeking out this information. So, if you're in the news business ... Just saying. Although I didn't catch TV's act on this one. I'm sure it was pretty much along the lines of the cartoon posted above.
  16. I think Organissimo was experiencing slowdowns just prior to his death. ... Ahead of the curve once again.
  17. There was such a mix of influences going on within The Band itself -- from Rockabilly to Motown -- with the big organ, Robertson's prickly guitar lines and Helm's raspy drawl -- and the great harmonies in the vocals. Certainly they influenced a lot of bar and club bands in the '70s and '80s, I think. Bands with a blues bent, many of which never -- or rarely -- recorded, let alone sold a lot of records. Check out the track "Dew Drop Inn" by the Downchild Blues Band, for instance. Maybe another, more direct example -- "The Weight" by Jeff Healey.
  18. I got lucky with that group; I won a copy of The Last Waltz in a radio station trivia contest when I was a teen and was instantly hooked. Music from Big Pink is one of the classics! Always loved The Band. The drummer, Levon Helm, after recovering a few years ago from throat cancer, began holding regular Midnight Rambles in his barn in Woodstock that included a wide swath of musicians. Vol. 1 * Levon Helm ~ Drums * Little Sammy Davis ~ Vocal & Harmonica * Fred Scribner ~ Guitar * Mike Merritt ~ Bass * Garth Hudson ~ Accordion * Fred Scribner ~ Guitar * Frank Luther ~ Bass * Carey Brown ~ Piano Vol. 2 * Levon Helm: drums & vocals * Amy Helm: mandolin & vocals * Johnnie Johnson: piano * Little Sammy Davis: Vocal & Harmonica * Dr John: guitar & vocals * Jon R. Smith: saxophone * Sean Costello: guitar & vocals * Andrew Shober: bass & vocals * Julia Smith: vocals * Stephen Bernstein: trumpet * Byron Isaacs: bass & vocals * Eric Lawrence: saxophone * Tony Leone: drums & vocals * Fiona McBain: guitar & vocals * Glen Patscha: keyboards & vocals * Larry Cambell: fiddle & vocals * Jimmy Vivino: guitar & vocals * Mike Merritt: bass * Tony Leone: drums & vocals From wiki:
  19. AL East now has four teams with 40 or more wins.
  20. Thanks Dan. Warm overview of an interesting guy. I love some of the stuff delmark puts out today.
